Canyon Lake’s Softball Team stays alive for the weekend as the Cuero game was postponed until this coming Monday due to weather.

Meanwhile in Wimberley, the Hawks, held on with a one run game as the contest was almost lost in that final inning with the winning run at the plate when Center Fielder Carly Dubois caught that final out, 8-7.

CL had an 8-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning as the Texans responded with 6 unanswered runs as Hawk fans were working on getting appointments with their local Nail Salon.

“We fought through some adversary with the weather and were focused up until that fifth inning,” Head Coach John Gallagher said while biting his nails. “We had been working on laying off the high pitches but we had some trouble swinging at those pitches.”

The Hawks scratched across a run in the first inning without recording a hit as Dubois had her first walk of this season and then stole second base leaving her 2 stolen bases from the most in the Hawk annals.

An infield out for Kat Weber allowed Dubois an opportunity to advance to third base where she scored on a sacrifice fly ball from Alexis Robinson.

Canyon Lake scored three of their runs via a sacrifice fly which is also a record for this Hawk club.

CL had scored 13 times in their previous 4890 plate appearances on sacrifice fly outs before scoring 3 times in 25 at bats in this game.

Canyon Lake increased their lead with 2 runs in the top of the fourth inning when Weber started the inning with a single and Robinson worked a free pass (walk).

After the next two Hawks struck out, Kirsten Jones placed a perfect single through the infield scoring one run after Robinson scored on a passed ball.

“We wanted to play our hardest and prove that we could do it,” Jones said when responding to the win.

Jones had been moved from the top of the batting order and this different spot was handy in this win.

“It takes away the stress,” Jones said when responding on how she felt batting later. “There are more people in front of me now and I don’t have to respond so early in the game.”

Wimberley answered in the bottom of the fourth with one run and the Hawks lead, 3-1.

CL was not through as they would score 5 runs in the next two innings, highlighted by Robinson’s double helping to extend that shaky lead to 7 runs.

That is when Wimberley would start a desperate try in staging a comeback that just fell short by one run and no fingernails for Hawk fans.

Robinson had only reached a three ball count on one batter up until the final inning when her control would would leave her for a 4 run ninth inning.

Three walks interspersed with two hits would make the final inning a nail biter.

“Next week starting on Monday we are going to be working hard on finishing stronger,” Jones finished.

Canyon Lake will celebrate Senior Day this coming Tuesday as the La Vernia Bears come calling for a must win game.
