Alexa Ramos, Emily McDonald, and Reagan Heun after Win over Texans
Wimberley lost their grip in loss to Canyon Lake as the Hawks won for the first time since February 9, 2010. This win was the first victory on the Texan’s home turf, 51-49.
That was the year your Hawks qualified for the playoffs in their second year of competition. That win was needed to get their ticket punched for those fun games.
“I am really pleased with our effort as Wimberley forced us out of our comfort zone,” Head Coach Zach Burleson surmised. “We had so many opportunities in that 4th Quarter to knock them down and increase our lead but this game showed we took a step in the right direction.”
That direction is becoming a straighter Backbone for this edition of Canyon Lake Lady Hawks.

Head Girl’s Basketball Coach Zach Burleson
The ReSporter: Well, you had your first week of games….what is your overall feeling bout this years group of girls?
Coach Burleson: “Well we have seen some positive things. We are getting more comfortable with each other and with what we want to do.”
The ReSporter: You have been short handed to start this year’s games, when do you expect to be with a full squad?
Coach Burleson: “It’s always a fluid situation. Lineups will change, not necessarily because someone isn’t playing well, but more due to us just needing to see how a particular group plays together. Injuries will also happen, so we need to be prepared to play with multiple lineups.”

Reagan Heun in earlier game with Lehman holding on in this non-contact sport.
Canyon Lake evened their record to 1-1 after a win on Friday night against Johnson City, 45-23.
The Hawks have yet to field their full line-up as Reagan Heun was held out for precautionary reasons in this match-up.
On the flip side, CL did have the return of Alexa Ramos, Sarah Russell, and Emily McDonald which made up for Heun’s absence in this win.
Those three players combined for 28 points which would have been enough points for this victory.

Canyon Lake was a no show during the second half as Liberty Hill took control of this game winning, 38-17 and advancing to the next round.
“We made too many mistakes and good teams will capitalize on that,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “We had some missed tackles and when you get into the playoffs, every play is important.”
The first half had the Hawks leading in every statistical component, but when the curtain was raised to start the second stanza, CL was stuck in neutral. The Hawks were able to garner just 63 total yards during this period of the game as LH started hitting their stride gaining 212 rushing yards allowing the home team to run out the clock once their lead was established.

The start of Sub-Varsity Girls Basketball was on full throttle last Tuesday night as these two teams swept the Lehman Lobos at the Hawk Nest.
The ReSporter could only attend one game but seeing some of the JV 1 squad game the Hawk enthusiasts would certainly noticed a difference with the level of play as this Hawk team walloped the Lobos, 48-31.
Head JV 1 Coach Jimmy Chamberlin when asked after the game about this Hawk team said, “We scored points,” with a broad smile seen from ear to ear.
In past campaigns, Canyon Lake has struggled to score 48 points in multiple games added together and this exhibition showed again on how talented this group of Freshman girls have been.

Canyon Lake’s Girls Basketball future looks bright even after a 2 point loss to Lehman in a season opening contest at the Hawk Nest on Tuesday night, 38-36.
Lehman outscored CL by 6 points in the last 4 minutes of play to pull the win on a shot with 2 seconds on the clock.
“We had good effort,” Head Basketball Coach Zach Burleson commented. “This was a good learning experience and after we look at the film we will find what we will need to work on.”
