Hawks Volleyball Sweep Gonzales to Go, 2-0 in District

Bailey Drum getting her point across as Alexis Robinson and Hannah Wunderlich wait in anticipation

CL Hawks (22-8) Volleyball team swept Gonzales on Friday going, 2-0 in District 26-4A and setting up a show down this coming Tuesday in Navarro.

There are some decent teams in District 26-4A this year, but only two teams have a solid resume and the Hawk’s next opponent will be that other team.

CL did not take any prisoners on this evening jumping out for a, 25-6 first set victory that would give you an indication of what would happen for this evening.

Gonzales has just 2 wins this season and keeping the game competitive would be difficult on this night for the Apaches.

The Hawks won the next two sets to complete the sweep, 25-10 and 25-15.

Hawks Break Wimberley’s Back Bone in Win, 28-14

Hawks with Devil's Back Bone Trophy after Wimberley Win

Hawks with Devil’s Back Bone Trophy after Wimberley Win

Canyon Lake Broke Wimberley’s Back Bone in Win on Friday at the Hawk Nest, 28-14.

The first year for the Back Bone Trophy will now have a home at Canyon Lake for the next year as the Hawks took care of business in the second half to win their second game in three years over our friends to the North.

This win had a stellar defensive game by both teams but a goal line stand in the third quarter allowed this scrappy Hawk team to stave off the Texans and hold onto their 7 point lead, 21-14.

Turnovers were a friend for CL as in year’s past, it has been a Hawk problem holding onto the ball or throwing interceptions against the Texans.

Two costly fumbles and an interception helped Canyon Lake win a game that has been hard to come by for so many years.

Overall, CL had a good set of games with Wimberley as the Hawk JV had the only loss as they were stranded on the 2 yard line when time ran out on Thursday.

Texans Migrate South in Loss to Hawk Freshman, 48-0

Cameron Hebert, Sheldon Flint, Triston Chacon, and Trenton Lorett after won over Wimberley

Canyon Lake was so convincing in their win over Wimberley that the Texans headed south after the loss at the Hawk Nest, 48-0.

On CL’s first series, the Hawks had a 10 yard penalty holding the Hawks without a first and their first and only punt.

After that series the Texans had a hard time turning off the water in what would be an inevitable convincing win.

That first set of downs had this Freshman team gaining 15 yards but the penalty left them 5 yards short of a first and their first and only punt of the game.

Wimberley got one of their two first downs on their next possession but that was all the joy they would get as the punting formation would become routine.

“They have had a year of hearing Wimberley talk after last year’s game,” Head Freshman Coach Bill Greene said. “They decided they would go to work and win tonight,”

White Lightning and Big Red are all smiles after win over Wimberley, 24-6

Mountain Valley 7th B team ran to a 24 lead while keeping the Texans with just 55 yards of offense helping the Hawks sweep Wimberley on their first game of the season, 24-6.

A paltry 1 first down for Wimberley tells the story as MV gave up just one 49 yard play for the night giving the Texans their only score.

That one play was 89% of the Texans total offense giving Wimberley right at .4 yards per play for the rest of the contest.

Mountain Valley A squad pitched a shut-out over Wimberley as the Hawks started their season (1-0) winning, 16-0.

Defense was in full gear as the Hawks kept the Texans with just 2 first downs and 47 total yards for the game.

Mountain Valley had the ball twice in that first half but on those two drives they left Wimberley with just 3 plays and a punt.

The Hawks then capitalized on their second time with the ball when they drove 73 yards on 12 plays which drained the clock with a touchdown pass with no time left on the clock.

Coaches Corner with Volleyball’s Kim Paisley

The ReSporter: What is your thinking on where the team is as district play starts?
Coach Paisley: “We handled business in 3 sets and 1-0 is a great start. I felt we had a rusty start in game 1 due to being off for a week, but we got back on track and will continue to lay the hammer and compete.”

The ReSporter: What are some things that need to be shored up as you proceed?
Coach Paisley: “We must be more consistent with our serve receive and defense. Everything begins with a pass. Must be sharp and consistent as we head on from there and our offense will fall into place and be more consistent.”

Head Coach Charley Drum

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, when I think about your career at Canyon Lake your first job was Defensive Coordinator….I was thinking what did it feel like watching last week’s game?

Coach Drum: “It was very uncomfortable….I told the defense that you tend to think you got blown out yet we were in the game the whole night. Sometimes you have shoot-outs and sometimes the score is 14-0. We just got to figure out how to win these close games and come up with a big play.”

The ReSporter: What did you talk about in the halftime locker room?

Coach Drum: “I told the defense that they needed to come up with 3 stops to win and we only had one but still had a chance to win the game.”

Head Coach Hosea Stredic

The ReSporter had some time to talk with Head Coach Hosea Stredic at Bracken Christian after their first loss of the season this week.

The ReSporter: What will you do to get the younger players on your squad ready for their first road game with The Winston?

Coach Stredic: “I will let them know that although we are going for a ride, it is just another room in our big house. It is our home wherever we go and play.”

The ReSporter: How will you go through your week realizing that you will have to address many of the things that went wrong in the game with Austin Hill Country?

Coach Stredic: “We will practice as planned….Get back into our routine, and we will be fine.” Read the rest here »
