Canyon Lake’s Soccer teams started their district play last Tuesday and found that a Greyhound is fast in dribbling a soccer ball, in their loss to Boerne.

Junior Mike Thorpe scored his 10th Goal of the season in loss to Boerne
The Hawk Boys team did put a minor scare in Boerne as they scored their first goal when Mike Thorpe was near the goal for a put back with about 11 minutes left on the first half clock.
“We came out fresh and ready to play,” Thorpe scored first. “We were countering their attack and they could not hit the target.”
That goal for Thorpe was his 10th for this season which has to be a big change for this Junior that was on a team that scored just three goals for the season during his Freshman campaign and six goals last year.
Now Thorpe has scored more goals than the Hawk team had in his first two years of competition.

Hawk Basketball has become a hard game to finish this year as the Lady Hawks will need to sweep their last two opponents if Cuero does not lose in their last two contests. If the Hawks can take care of business with La Vernia next Tuesday, then that too would keep the playoff door open for Canyon Lake.

Texas RV supports Canyon Lake Basketball
Cuero has the two bottom teams in the standings and their could be an upset but CL will also need to take care of business in Wimberley to give them a chance to tie Cuero and have a play in game.
For the Hawk Boy’s team, a sweep would be the best way of describing their way of playing into the post season.
That will be a tough order since many of the remaining teams are on the higher echelon of the district standings at this writing.
The Lady Hawks had a lead for much of their game with Cuero but just ran into a dry spell that continued long enough to seal the deal for their loss.
Kyndall Drum was a human vacuum cleaner on the glass as this young lady finished with a double-double scoring 13 points and pulling down 17 rebounds in the game.
That rebound total was right at a half of the total rebounds for Canyon Lake and Drum scored one third of the points.

Hawks making a pitch that this year’s team will be prepared to make the next step
Softball will be starting soon for Canyon Lake as this year’s team will see if they can improve on their last year of hitting and pitching.
Yes, The ReSporter left one item that will need to improve the most for the Hawks, defense.
Canyon Lake made great strides with last year’s team as several Freshman brought their speed and hitting to the lineup.
However, Canyon Lake’s defense was that one ingredient that will need to be improved upon.

This Week at Canyon Lake
Canyon Lake Basketball Teams are approaching the last part of their schedules as the girls have three more contests while the boys play 5 more times.

Y4 Custom Homes Sponsors Canyon Lake Sports
For the girl’s team, the Hawks will have another big game at home with Cuero and a win would give Canyon Lake a two game lead over the Gobblers.
The schedule will end on an easier note for Cuero as they will play the two cellar dwellers in to end their schedule putting more pressure on CL to come out on top and then get one win out of their last two games to clinch.
Wimberley would be one of those clubs and the Texans have been playing some inspired round ball as they walloped Navarro at their house to start the last round of games and really have not been threatened the last couple of weeks.
Canyon Lake will have their last game with La Vernia at home to end the season and a win on that night would be huge for the young upstart Hawk team.
Navarro looks to be in good shape to finish first with Wimberley being a solid second place at this writing.
The third and fourth place is still being played out as Canyon Lake is joined by Cuero and La Vernia for those two coveted spots.
On the Hawk Boys side, another year seems to slipping away without a chance for more games as Canyon Lake needed a win over Navarro to get some much needed momentum.
With games remaining against Wimberley, Cuero, and La Vernia, Canyon Lake will have their work cut out for them to come out on the winning side in that many games.
Counting the Freshman and Junior Varsity to last week’s games, CL finished 5-1 in those combined games giving hope for a much brighter future, especially considering so many of those younger players are entrenched in the upper teams based on age.
Canyon Lake’s Soccer teams will start their district off with a double header this Tuesday at home against Boerne.
The Greyhounds started their district play with two very convincing wins over Wimberley last week giving the other four teams something to take notice.
More will be known about the Hawks after this coming Tuesday as both teams come into this year’s district games on an upbeat.
The Girl’s team has an oftense that can certainly put goals in the net, but now when district starts that net might start to get a little tighter.
Their are five teams in District 28-4A and those schools are playing musical chairs as only one team will be eliminated after district games come to a close.
This will give the Hawk Boy’s team the best chance since play started six years ago to keep playing in the post-season.
Fredericksburg boys and girls team beat Bandera last week and now Canyon Lake starts their quest for some Hawk history.
Tuesday will be a good night to come watch Soccer and Basketball as both venues will be at home.
Hawk Swimmers will be in action again this week-end at Palo Alto College as several students had a break out UIL District 28-4A Meet last week.
The UIL Region 7-4A Championships will give Canyon Lake a chance to make their splash to be able to qualify for the State Championships later this month.
A good week for Canyon Lake and now sports start to get interesting and just around the corner Softball and Baseball being joined by Track and Field will commence as February matures.
Go Hawks!!

Hawks taking instructions for battle
Canyon Lake had a tough night in Navarro on Friday night as both Girls and Boys could not get a much needed win against the Panthers.
The girls game had a return of that nemesis called turnovers, as the Lady Hawks committed 31of those dastardly happenings.
Navarro is the front runner in the District 26-4A race and beating this club was going to be a big hurdle to clear for this young Hawk club.
With this loss, CL is perched in the fourth and final spot in making the playoffs as Cuero, (Canyon Lake’s next opponent) suffered a loss to La Vernia and which are two teams the Hawks still have on their schedule.

Canyon Lake won a must win game with Gonzales, 58-39, on Tuesday night to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Sean Nolan pitched in with 14 points and 10 rebounds in win over Apaches Picture taken from Gonzales Paper
“We are not used to being in a position where we are a favorite in a game,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We did what we wanted to do to get this win.”
Three Hawk’s finished with double digit scoring in the game with the Apaches, Sean Nolan led the trio with 14 points with Garrett Winters and Brandon Ward each chipping in 11 points a piece.
CL is in a position where wins are a must as the second round of district contests have started.
A reduced amount of turnovers will certainly help as that element of the game will need to be a cornerstone on how this season will play out.
“We need to eliminate those unforced turnovers,” Coach Chapman commented. “That helps keep us up on a motivational standpoint, if we can keep the turnovers down for four quarters.”
Defense was also on display in the game with Gonzales as players like Senior Skyler Tschoepe led the team with four steals and countless hustle plays.
Tschoepe finished with 7 points but his other points were scored with 4 assists, 6 rebounds, and a blocked shot for a solid game effort.

Junior Brandon Ward’s defense turned into offense in win over Gonzales
Brandon Ward also had a good all-around game with a nice shooting touch and also finishing with 3 assists.
This next round of games will be how a team can adjust their game after seeing each opponent for the second time.
“We learn who their best players are and have a better scouting report,” Junior Ward said. “That allows us to go over specific things to close down that scorer.”
On playing a better game of defense, “You get pumped up with defense and when you can turn a good stop into points then that will come from our focus and helping it lead to offense.”
Canyon Lake will need to reenact another game like the one played with the Apaches when the Hawks face Navarro this Friday because another win can be the only solution for giving this team a chance to advance.

Canyon Lake completed their sweep of Gonzales as the Junior Varsity and Freshman teams were both successful.
The Junior Varsity was in control from the first quarter when they scored 17 points while holding the Apaches to a meager 3 points.
Thomas and Wilkins both finished with double digit scoring with 17 and 15 points respectfully.
CL defense did not allow any chance for a Gonzales comeback while the good guys won three of the four quarters and going into that final stanza leading 23 points.
The Hawk Freshman also won their game but had a tougher first quarter as both teams were tied at 7 all.
Both teams scored 37 points combined in the second quarter but the Hawks reached 21 points and in rarefied air.
Boyd (13) and Cole (11) finished in double digit scoring with McDonough (9) just one point from that mark.
A third quarter 10 point cushion helped Canyon Lake coast into the fourth quarter for another Hawk win over Gonzales.

Canyon Lake scored their most goals in a game with their victory (7) as 6 goals were scored in the Hawks win back in 2009-10 season over Bloomington in the Victoria St. Joseph Tournament.
Those 7 goals were also the same number of goals Canyon Lake had all of last season. (13 games)
With this win, CL also tied their longest win streak with at two with this victory.
Mike Thorpe was on this night scoring four goals with two assists to boot and was joined by James Alexander, Grayson Rohrbacher, and Julian DeLaPaz.
Thorpe was also joined with three other Hawk’s on assist, Rohrbacher, Jordan Schzech, and Juan Guzman.
