Hawk Basketball Week’s Review & Top Three

Hawks go over strategy during a time-out

Hawks go over strategy during a time-out

Canyon Lake Boys Basketball does not have much time to get their act together for a playoff spot.

There is still a chance for the Hawks to make the High School Dance thanks in part to an UIL ruling that allows 4 teams to qualify from each district.

This week’s game with Wimberley will be pivotal in this quest as a win would put CL in a position to make a statement this year.

The football team pulled off two rounds of playoffs with a losing record, but the difference in these two scenarios was the Hawks finishing 3rd when they finished their district season.

Softball will be in full swing as the 2014 season fast approaches.

The first official practice started last Saturday as newcomers and oldies all were out wanting to see what this year might have in store.

“I was very pleased this week in seeing who came out,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “The talent that showed up today was very encouraging.”

When asked what type of talent was seen, Coach Gallagher was forthcoming, “Overall athleticism, we have girls who can play that I did not see a month ago.”

The Hawks will have a four team scrimmage at Canyon High School on February 1st and then a home game scrimmage on Friday, February 7th with Harper.

CL Baseball has Potential This Season

past year and there will be several faces returning for a chance of advancing in the playoffs this season.

The graduating players had a .271 batting average and 4.11 era with the largest loss coming from the loss of power. A total of 31 extra base hits have left the diamond with only 16 returning hits other than singles.

Returning players had a .259 average and a 4.42 era. The item to note is an extra year or being one year older can translate into better hitting and pitching.

For instance, Michael Brady had huge improvement from his Junior to Senior campaign.

Canyon Lake has the potential to be a very good defensive team as players that were lost to injury will be returning.

Lady Hawks Still Learning, Lose to Boerne, 59-27

Canyon Lake’s woes continue this season as this young team keeps searching for consistency on the court.

Junior Kyndall Drum

If the truth needs to be known, there are players on this squad that would be playing on Freshman and Junior Varsity teams at this time of the year, but instead, find themselves playing teams that have more years of experience.

So this season continues to be a learn while you play and then hopefully in a couple of years the scores can be reversed.

Amber Ramsey did have a 14 rebound game which speaks well for this Senior that is currently sitting in third place in all time rebounds for the Hawks with 526 caroms.

Tiffany Tschoepe with 579 and Katie Williams’ 559 boards would be next on the bar for Ramsey to attain as she finishes off her Senior campaign.

Canyon Lake’s All-District Selections

The Hawks have put their finishing touches to a season that started out with a lot of angst and ended up rivaling their best playoff season in three years when Canyon Lake went two games deep into the playoffs.

There is certainly a lot of work that goes into a year that starts out with the heat of Summer to finally end with cold temperatures in November.

Canyon Lake installed a new offense this season and with that construction started the year riding a six game losing streak before a win against Bandera that certainly righted a ship and moved this team to a third place finish in District 27-3A.

This year had three wins that will certainly go down in the books as classics.

Hawks Fall Flat in Loss to Wimberley, 70-46

Junior Skyler Tschoepe readies for a 3 pointer

Canyon Lake’s first quarter started so bad that the score was Skyler Tschoepe 10 and Wimberley 27 in the second quarter.

In fact the first Hawk not named Tschoepe to score was Isaac Mendez with a little less than four minutes left in the first half.

Tschoepe finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds in a game that was hard to find a positive vibe.

Canyon Lake had 19 points in the first half which also matched the number of turnovers for a Hawk team that found it hard to beat a press put on by the Texans.

The Hawks would pull within 11 points with an 8 point run to start the second half, but after Luke Curry scored five points in a 10 second period out spurt the Basketball gods decided to let this hot Hawk to go down with an ankle injury.

Coaches Corner with Lucas Chapman

The ReSporter: Your thoughts on this team before the season and now…what is something

you have seen that you did not expect?

Coach Chapman: “I think we are finally shaping up to be the team I expected in the pre-season. We are getting up and down the court a lot more and using our athleticism to our advantage. We are steadily improving and for the first time maybe in the history of our program we are playing our best going into district. I don’t know if things are happening that I didn’t expect, I am just glad that we are starting to play like I expected.”

The ReSporter: What has happened that you thought would be better?

Coach Chapman: “I thought we would be better with our man defense, which has been our calling card the past few seasons. Fortunately, we have found an alternative (our zone) that has worked really well for us and has allowed us to play more of the style that we would like to play. Now that I have really looked at it and studied it, our personnel is better suited for a zone defense because it allows us to scramble around and get more steals and deflections. We will still play man defense, but the zone has really saved us this year.”

Hawks Sweep Gonzales with Varsity and JV Victories

Canyon Lake solved their starting slow mantra when they accumulated 23 points in the first quarter against Gonzales and coasted to their final non-district win, 52-39 last Tuesday night at the Hawk Gym.

“We finally came out from the start at home and made a statement,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “I feel a lot better now than I did two weeks ago and we have come a long way…we are ready to play.”
