Hawks Varsity can’t get to the mountain top in loss to Comfort Bobcats last Tuesday night at the Hawk gym, 49-46.
Canyon Lake’s scoring drought with over a minute left in the first quarter lasted with a little over two minutes left in the second quarter and that allowed Comfort to take a lead and win over the Hawks.
“We played stagnant and could not get the ball into the middle,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “Turnovers and frenzy shots did us in, but in the second half we got back into the game when we played man offense against their zone defense.”
By the time CL scored in the second quarter, Comfort had taken their one point deficit and ballooned their lead to an 11 point lead, 26-15.

– Hawk Time Trial:
This went more smoothly than I thought and we did very well. We started the season in a

much better position than last year and It really kicked the year off right. Although we did not keep score at this meet, it was clear that our Hawk swimmers dominated both San Marcos and Hays.

Coach Lloyd Fields fielded his thoughts on each player:
Jeff Camp: “We knew nothing about Jeff back in August when we got out our pads and he was big for us and our

program.”
John Colby: “John did a great job at linebacker as he had to replace an all everything player (Eli Achilles), he stepped into the job and handled it well.”
Davis Scott: “This was Davis’ third year and he was the ultimate team player as he changed positions five times and never complained…he did whatever was asked of him.”
Noah Boriack: “Boriack was our offense…these are units and this was the best offensive line we have had at BCS in the past six years…but Noah was a warrior and gave his all for the team. He could of been a first team defensive player for us, but he was too valuable for us on offense to play defense enough to get that award.”
Preston Koch: “Preston had a good career at Bracken and was the only starter that played on our State Championship Team three years ago from this group of Seniors.”

Coy Zunker Second Team Defensive Back
Sam Hilgendorf: “He was a competitor and team was always first and me second. Sam was the kind of guy you had to have to have a successful football team.”
Coy Zunker: “He would of made first team if it were not for his injury. Coy helped and played with a bad knee after the start of the year.”
Daniel Forgione: “Daniel is a guy who will get better and better, this year was his starting point.”
Mason Anthony: “Mason came in last year after losing several players to injury and he was a trooper when we needed him.”

Canyon Lake finally broke into the win column in their win over San Antonio Stacey, 67-64 in the Marion Tournament on Friday.
The Hawks were clicking by pouring in 49 points in the first half and leading by 24 points, 49-25.
In the second half, Stacey had their way winning that part of the game, 39-18.
The hot and cold Hawks continue to work on that formula that will be able to garner more wins and of course points in the process.
In the recent past, CL has had a hard time scoring points and getting into the 60 or more points arena will help in getting more chances for pulling out wins.

The Lady Hawks could not overcome their six point deficit in the first quarter and were beaten in their first game of this year at the hands of John Paul II, 35-32.
Canyon Lake did close the gap to three points going into the fourth quarter but could not reach the top of the canyon losing by that same margin.
“We played out of sync,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher started. “John Paul was aggressive and we did not come with our A game and so they capitalized on that.”
The Hawks continue to give too many points away with turnovers and missed free throws as the offense gave the ball back to John Paul 24 times while missing 10 shots from the charity stripe.

Hawk Freshman Take it on the Chin in loss to Lockhart, 63-30
Canyon Lake could not find the bottom of the rim in their loss to Lockhart last Tuesday night at the Mountain Valley Middle School.
“What a difference this game was after we scored 66 points in our game with Llano,” Head Freshman Coach John Bartthels said. “Turnovers played a major role in our loss, we had a spark in the fourth quarter but we started to late in playing like a team.”
The Hawks were led in scoring by Wilkins as he scored 10 points in the loss.
Canyon Lake was put on life support until the fourth quarter when the EMS finally found a pulse as the Hawks scored 13 points to help get to 30 for the final score.
Come support the Freshman in their next contest as they plan on rebounding on the hardwood.

Canyon Lake Varsity scratched and clawed their way back to a one point deficit going into the 4th quarter and then the trap door was sprung and Lockhart unleashed a 27 point barrage and buried the Hawks 62-45 last Tuesday night at Mountain Valley Middle School.
The Hawks were ahead 5-3 with 4:00 minutes left the the first quarter and that would be their last lead in this affair.
The Lockhart Lions led for the remainder of this game but did have a scare when CL closed to within one point when Garrett Winters drained a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the 3rd.
During the fourth quarter, the Lions started the stanza with a 17-1 spurt that took less than four minutes to attain.
Now Canyon Lake will need to learn how to play four quarters.
“We are still trying to figure stuff out,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman stated. “We did play better this week and we have 13 players that can play and contribute.”
As Coach Chapman continues to try different potions for his pre District experiment in making this Hawk team into a competitive unit entering district play in a month.
“Our ultimate goal is to get better,” Coach Chapman said. “We are getting better and we need to get things together especially defensively.”
There was some bright spots for the team as several players have only been to four practices after competing in the football arena recently.
Guard Garrett Winters did shine as he handled and shot the ball with a lot of confidence since playing on JV last year.
“I feel like I have grown up a lot,” Winters said. I feel like I’m rebounding and taking care of the ball and this still just our second game, but I feel we will get better and better.”
Canyon Lake will continue to get some unity with the team as they play in the Marion Tournament this weekend.

Hawks taking in their Win over Pleasanton in first round of playoffs
The ReSporter would like to take a look at this past football campaign as well as gazing into the future and into next season.
Canyon Lake matched the 2010 team when that club also climbed into the second round of playoff games.
Both years had a Hawk team needing to find themselves as each season they were coming into a district race with a losing record.
Both teams also lost their first district game, it was even worse for this year’s squad, as the Hawks went into District 27-3A games winless.
Canyon Lake had installed a new offense this year and there were some growing pains as the year advanced and with each loss there would be more questions.
