The Canyon Lake Freshman started their game with La Vernia Bears like they were the team in hibernation as the Hawks first and second quarter was a sleepy 11total points.
La Vernia capitalized on those two periods and held on for a 43-33 win.
Canyon Lake finally did awake with a 14 point third quarter which also allowed the Hawks close their 14 point halftime deficit to a five point barn burner.
“If we can put together four periods of basketball like we played in the third quarter tonight, then we are going to be competitive in all of our games,” Head Freshman Coach John Barthels stated. “The kids did a great job of staying positive both on and off the court.”

Canyon Lake finished the Hawk Classic on a down note on Saturday with two losses against Randolph and Liberty Hill.
The Hawks need games to get used to each players nuances and with time hoping that ingredient will jell in time before district play commences.
“We have a long way to go,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We still have a goal of working hard and to peak in January. There is still some stuff that we need to add.”
Canyon Lake is still on a first name basis among the players.
“We did a lot in those last two games,” Chapman closed. “We have played more games than practices.”
That statement gives a fan an idea of what is being shown in games now being improved upon as this season matures.

The Canyon Lake Lady Hoopsters won two games on Saturday in the Canyon Lake Classic to finish in 3rd Place.

Freshman Sarah Russell responds with solid game as she prepares for district play
Both games were slow starters in the first quarter, as the Hawks could only muster 5 points in each affair and in both instances were having to play catch up to finish on top.
These two games were must wins over schools that are smaller classifications and in the case of Lago Vista a team that had been on the losing side of that ledger earlier this season to the Hawks.
The Vikings jumped out to a double digit lead with 9 and 10 point runs that ended when CL had their two baskets in a row with 7 minutes left in the second quarter.
Canyon Lake finished that second quarter outscoring Lago Vista 18-7 as both teams retreated to their dressing rooms for halftime.
The Hawks continued their pace in the second half taking a lead on a bucket from Amber Ramsey with 6 minutes left in the quarter and what would be Lago Vista’s last lead in this contest.

Hawks Varsity can’t get to the mountain top in loss to Comfort Bobcats last Tuesday night at the Hawk gym, 49-46.
Canyon Lake’s scoring drought with over a minute left in the first quarter lasted with a little over two minutes left in the second quarter and that allowed Comfort to take a lead and win over the Hawks.
“We played stagnant and could not get the ball into the middle,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “Turnovers and frenzy shots did us in, but in the second half we got back into the game when we played man offense against their zone defense.”
By the time CL scored in the second quarter, Comfort had taken their one point deficit and ballooned their lead to an 11 point lead, 26-15.

– Hawk Time Trial:
This went more smoothly than I thought and we did very well. We started the season in a

much better position than last year and It really kicked the year off right. Although we did not keep score at this meet, it was clear that our Hawk swimmers dominated both San Marcos and Hays.

Coach Lloyd Fields fielded his thoughts on each player:
Jeff Camp: “We knew nothing about Jeff back in August when we got out our pads and he was big for us and our

program.”
John Colby: “John did a great job at linebacker as he had to replace an all everything player (Eli Achilles), he stepped into the job and handled it well.”
Davis Scott: “This was Davis’ third year and he was the ultimate team player as he changed positions five times and never complained…he did whatever was asked of him.”
Noah Boriack: “Boriack was our offense…these are units and this was the best offensive line we have had at BCS in the past six years…but Noah was a warrior and gave his all for the team. He could of been a first team defensive player for us, but he was too valuable for us on offense to play defense enough to get that award.”
Preston Koch: “Preston had a good career at Bracken and was the only starter that played on our State Championship Team three years ago from this group of Seniors.”

Coy Zunker Second Team Defensive Back
Sam Hilgendorf: “He was a competitor and team was always first and me second. Sam was the kind of guy you had to have to have a successful football team.”
Coy Zunker: “He would of made first team if it were not for his injury. Coy helped and played with a bad knee after the start of the year.”
Daniel Forgione: “Daniel is a guy who will get better and better, this year was his starting point.”
Mason Anthony: “Mason came in last year after losing several players to injury and he was a trooper when we needed him.”

Canyon Lake finally broke into the win column in their win over San Antonio Stacey, 67-64 in the Marion Tournament on Friday.
The Hawks were clicking by pouring in 49 points in the first half and leading by 24 points, 49-25.
In the second half, Stacey had their way winning that part of the game, 39-18.
The hot and cold Hawks continue to work on that formula that will be able to garner more wins and of course points in the process.
In the recent past, CL has had a hard time scoring points and getting into the 60 or more points arena will help in getting more chances for pulling out wins.

The Lady Hawks could not overcome their six point deficit in the first quarter and were beaten in their first game of this year at the hands of John Paul II, 35-32.
Canyon Lake did close the gap to three points going into the fourth quarter but could not reach the top of the canyon losing by that same margin.
“We played out of sync,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher started. “John Paul was aggressive and we did not come with our A game and so they capitalized on that.”
The Hawks continue to give too many points away with turnovers and missed free throws as the offense gave the ball back to John Paul 24 times while missing 10 shots from the charity stripe.
