Hawks Boys Basketball Start Season in Loss to Cedar Creek

Canyon Lake had a rude awakening to their season last Tuesday as they absorbed a 50 point loss to Cedar Creek.

One item to take note would be playing a higher classification school will not result in good things when many players are still in pads and helmets.

The Hawks are still without a compliment of players and this is not to imply a loss would not have still been the outcome. But, that outcome would have not been of this magnitude.

“Obviously it is disappointing any time you lose,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman stated. “I was very proud of our effort. We were outmanned and the guys we did have suit out, played as hard as they could.”

Playing a game when many of your players have not practiced and will not be implemented until the football season ends does give a coach a chance to see other tendencies with a team besides a score.

Coaches Corner with Bracken’s Lloyd Fields

Coaches Corner: Lloyd Fields

The ReSporter: How has your week of practice been going Coach?

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Coach Fields: “We have been getting ready to play a ballgame…when we played this game earlier this year after our contest with Austin Hill Country and our game with Sugar Land helped right our ship.”

The ReSporter: What is your overall thought about the game this week?

Coach Fields: “They are bigger and faster, but we are more physical…looking at the polls they have this game as even and that would be a good way of looking at this contest since we just won by four points in our earlier game.”

The ReSporter: What do you tell your players in getting them prepared for this game?

Coach Fields: “We have to bring our ‘A’ game and make no mistakes because this game will be decided in the fourth quarter, this is the most evenly matched game in the first round of playoffs, the other teams can put a check by their name and go to the next round.”

Point Hawks!!

Point Hawks!!

Last week the Canyon Lake community lost another icon when Scott Watson passed away.

Remembering the first encounter with Scott, The ReSporter was then The Hilltop Reporter.

While working on the sports page, Scott, called and wanted to know why The Hilltop Reporter would put the word, Lady, to describe the Hawks when writing a Volleyball headline.

Scott, quite frankly wanted us to know that he would rather that phrase be done in another way.

That conversation was over five years ago and from that one encounter, The Hilltop Reporter had found a friend.

The Hawks were in a battle the whole game but were able to lead by 6 at halftime.

Amber Ramsey was able to control the boards while getting her second double figure total finishing with 11 karooms.

Freshman Sarah Russell was the only Hawk to finish in double figures scoring as she finished with 11 points.

This game could of been a blow out if the Hawks could of shot 30% or more percent from the field.

BCS Has Positive Win Holding Winston in Negative Total Yards, 46-0

Bracken beat The Winston, 46-0, running 15 plays on offense.

In fact, Coach Lloyd Fields was using his bonus point play as a scrimmage play near the end of the game.

The Warriors, in the past have beaten teams before they got off the bus coming to the games based on reputation. The Winston was beaten many days ago based on their effort in this contest.

BCS had four one play drives for touchdowns that covered a total of 166 yards. That number could have been five drives if receiver Jeff Camp had not stumbled after catching a pass from QB Sam Hilgendorf. The play finished six yards from paydirt.

Every statistic offensively for Bracken had a player with over a 10 yard average each time the ball was touched.

Hawk’s Locked in Ballroom Closet in Loss to Navarro, 62-0

Ballroom dancing takes lots of room and the Panthers had no problem on the dance floor after locking Canyon Lake in a broom closet.

The game got ugly fast when Navarro found the Hawk’s girl friend to boot and did some break dancing with the Hawk’s date.

Two plays and a fumble for the Hawks and one play and a score for Navarro and with 11:02 left in the first quarter, the Panthers had already scored more points than CL, in what proved to be their second worse loss, trailing their very first game ever.

Blanco has those honors when the Hawks lost 63-0 on that night in 2008.

Mountain Valley’s 8th ‘A’ Team has tough Loss to Navarro, 28-22

Mountain Valley’s 8th ‘A’ team started their engines too late in a loss to Navarro last Thursday night, 28-22.

The first half of this game was a clinic as Navarro scored on two of their three possessions and a defense that allowed MV no yardage for being stuck in the sand.

Mountain Valley only had 11 plays and accumulated 30 yards for a anemic 2.7 yards per play.

Then the Hawks decided to get after these Panthers when they took the kick-off and ran like a panther over the panthers.

Volleyball Coaches Corner and Final 2013 Stats

Coaches Corner with Volleyball Coach Kim Paisley

The ReSporter: Hey Coach a tough ending to your season, what happened?

Head Volleyball Coach Kimberley Paisley

Head Volleyball Coach Kimberley Paisley

Coach Paisley: “I would like to start off by saying, that I enjoyed my first volleyball season with Canyon Lake. I have had amazing help from my assistants and athletic girls coordinator and AD. The girls have been eager to learn and excited for the new things to come. I feel that overall we have played well and improved from day one. Our skills did not decline the second round, it was the lack of knowledge and sheer fight that stumped us in the second round.”

The ReSporter: What would you do different, knowing what you know now after your first year at Canyon Lake?

Mtn. Valley 8th ‘B’ Squad Climbs Mountain in Win over Navarro, 36-16

Matthew Rhodes, Parker Reno, and Bryce Pearson after a successful season.

Matthew Rhodes, Parker Reno, and Bryce Pearson after a successful season.

Mountain Valley climbed a mountain from the Valley and scored a big win over Navarro, 36-16 last Thursday at Hawk Field.

This game did not start well for MV as the Panthers took a quick three play drive 55 yards, putting Mountain Valley in a valley to start this affair.

Mountain Valley however would answer on their ensuing drive when Rolando Maronge capped a 65 yard drive from 26 yards out converting a fourth down with a touchdown.

The Hawks then proceded to get two defensive stops that was sandwiched with a fumbled punt giving Navarro a continuation of their drive.

Jesse Sarmiento helped even that turnover battle intercepting Navarro’s first pass of the game giving the Hawks possession and a chance to right the ship.

A methodical 8 play drive that still left too much time on the clock after Parker Reno converted a quarterback sneak.
