Top 5 Games-2014-15 Year: Game 3

Friday, May 29th, 2015
Hawks Beat Fredericksburg for big win in last year's season.

Hawks lose to Wimberley for another close loss in last year’s season.

Game 5: Canyon Lake 70 Yoakum 52 Basketball
Game 4: Canyon Lake vs. Wimberley 25-21, 21-25, 25-23 Volleyball
Game 3: Canyon Lake 49 Fredericksburg 31 Football

Canyon Lake had an up and down season so far up to this game with Fredericksburg and beating the Billies would go a long way in giving this team their confidence back with a total win via, offense, special teams, and defense (when they needed The stop).

Two years ago Fredericksburg beat CL at home and did not take any prisoners in this game, winning, 38-14.

This time, Canyon Lake returned the favor as the Hawks not only controlled the clock with their running game, but also had quick answer touchdowns via kick-off returns.

The Billies could not muster any momentum giving up those two special team scores and then add two costly fumbles and Canyon Lake would not look back.

One of those fumbles happened on the one inch line as a Billie lost the ball jumping over the goal line after a jarring hit.

Josh DeVries only had one carry at home in the loss, but on this night, DeVries ran for 120 yards and had Robert Woods join him when he broke the 100 yard barrier too.

Canyon Lake has now rushed for 661 yards the last two years as the Hawks have had success with Fredericksburg these past few years.

The number, 165 is what helped win this game as that number was the total yardage for the two kick-off returns by DeVries and Matt Adams.

Both returns were in the first half and both happened right when the Billies had taken a lead. The first was after a Billies field goal and then Adams return nullified a 17-14 Fredericksburg lead.

Canyon Lake would hold Fredericksburg after that second return and then score with just 1 second on the clock before halftime.

The Hawks would have the ball first to start the second stanza and after taking 7 minutes off the clock ran the score to, 35-17.

Defense would stop Freddie again and Canyon Lake would score again with a little over 3 minutes left in the third quarter, 42-17, giving your Hawks their 28 unanswered points.

Hayden Dubois would score again to finish the game, his fourth touchdown run for this game.

Special Teams: No Punts and 2 kickoff returns.                     √
Offense: Controlled the clock 33:10 and Fredericksburg 14:50. √
Defense: 2 stops saving a td and drive giving the CL a quick score. √

The win would turn out to be a game to get Canyon Lake in the Playoff door for the second year in a row.

CL had 7 losses and of those games the Hawks would lose by a touchdown or less in 6 of those evenings.

 Losses Score Difference
 Blanco 07-35 -28
 Wimberley 27-28 -01
 Lampasas 14-21 -07
 Liberty Hill 14-19 -05
 Taylor 31-33 -02
 Boerne 35-42 -07
 Rockport-Fulton 21-27 -06 overtime

That first game with Blanco would be the only contest that Canyon Lake was a no-show and a play here and there could have had a team with a much better season record.

That would explain how Canyon Lake would score more points than they gave up with 2 more losses on their ledger. (365 offense– 310 defense)

This win was big and would set up another run in those playoffs!!

Go Hawks!!

Game 5: Canyon Lake 70 Yoakum 52    Basketball

Game 4 in the count down of the Top 5 games played this past season will certainly be a surprise to some of you since this game did not involve a Varsity team.

This year, Canyon Lake had many sub-varsity teams that finished at the top district races as Mountain Valley keeps feeding some salty classes to the halls in CL that are transferring to a sporting event.

The Hawks had a break out year in Volleyball this season, but many times when a Varsity team comes through with a good season, the Freshman and Junior Varsity might not be as talented.

You might say that those Varsity teams were successful because they needed those younger players to help get them in a better position to compete in those all important district games.

Wimberley has been a thorn in the side of Hawk fans ever since the first year of competition and this past season, the Junior Varsity made great strides as they too were a much improved group of ladies that will be ready to take the baton from those Senior Volleyball players.

Canyon Lake’s Varsity finished by hitting the 30 win plateau, but one of the better games played came during a home game against Wimberley.

The Varsity had an undefeated district record as did Wimberley in the first half of the round robin of district games and the stands would fill up with more people to ever witness a home game.

Canyon Lake had Three Players Awarded in Basketball

Sean Nolan is awarded First Team All-District this past season.

Canyon Lake had some individual awards in Basketball as Senior Sean Nolan took down the nets making District 26-4A First Team All District.

Nolan set several records this past season as he was a Rock of Gibraltar for the Hawks all season long.

Finishing with 220 points and 207 rebounds was a good start in showing other teams they might have to game plan around this young man.

More than that was his 55 blocked shots which certainly helped this season in slowing down opposing team’s offense.

Nolan also led the Hawk team in field goal percentage with a lofty .575 number.

CL Freshman Run Away from Bulldogs in Win, 55-13

Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

Canyon Lake’s Freshman squad started a sweep on Tuesday night as they ran away from Yoakum in grand fashion, 55-13.

In fact, the Hawk’s 14 points in the first quarter would have won this game as Yoakum did not have an answer to every Hawk but two scoring in this game.

“The last couple of weeks we have been working on our mental toughness in practice,” Head Freshman Coach Javier Almanza started. “This group has tons of potential and they bust their butts in games and practices….we are night and day better than where we were when we started.”

Joseph and McDonough led the scoring with 12 and 10 points respectfully as Joseph also chipped in with 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Canyon Lake also stole the show with 23 thefts as Yoakum found it tough to advance the ball to get a shot off.

CLJV Basketball Stifle Yoakum in Win, 37-28

Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

Canyon Lake’s JV team finished their District 26-4A season with a 9-3 record after taking care of Yoakum Bulldogs, 37-28.

“This game wasn’t pretty,” Head JV Coach Brian Hooper stated. “This team has gotten better as this season has progressed and as the competition started getting tougher this team has been getting after it.”

The Hawk’s largest lead was 10 points with less than 3 minutes in the game as their persistence was consistent as their defense kept Yoakum with just 28 points.

Heath McDonough finished this game with a double-double scoring 14 points with 12 rebounds.

Canyon Lake had a suffocating defense which allowed just enough time for working the offense in getting points and this win.

With just enough from the rest of the team allowed Canyon Lake to increase their lead in the second half and their eventual win.

Hawks Win final Basketball Game over Yoakum, 70-52

Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

The Hawks started their last game of this season with an all out senior line up and then an all out sophomore, Rory Preiss blitz in their win over Yoakum, 70-52.

With three minutes gone in the first quarter, CL was down 7 points with a very sloppy start as a Yoakum press was doing enough damage that Preiss finally jumped started the Hawks with a 9 point run within a one minute span.

Preiss scored 6 points in that minute and had an assist to Brandon Ward from beyond the arc to help bring the game back from what could have been the abyss.

That energy coming from Preiss also helped in reaching a double-double in the first half of play as Preiss ended with 15 points and 10 rebounds before the end of that second quarter.

“We started off too loose and sloppy,” Head Coach Luke Chapman said. “We had great energy from Rory, right when we needed it.”

Offensive rebounds galore helped CL with one of their best shooting games this season at 48% with a team best 29 field goals.

“Once we got into the offensive side of the court, Yoakum did not have a defensive answer,” Coach Chapman shot. “After getting better at breaking their press we had an opportunity with our transition game especially in that second half.”

The Hawks also finished with three turnovers in the second half compared to a press related 14 in the first half.

Lady Hawks Lose in Last Minute while the Boys also take a Loss

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks made their game very interesting as they closed a 13 point La Vernia lead and tied it up with just one minute left in the game.

Senior Kyndall Drum finishes her last game with 21 points as the Hawks just missed a chance for a win.

Senior Kyndall Drum finishes her last game with 21 points as the Hawks just missed a chance for a win.

Senior Kyndall Drum was the main instrumental piece that forged the comeback.

“I was angry,” Drum beat. “I did not want to end the season the way the game was going and so I just wanted to help as much as I could.”

Help she did as Drum was the tallest person on the floor for most of this game and La Vernia did not have an answer for her inside play as the Hawks finally started feeding Drum the ball and a comeback was started.

The Hawks started their play inside while La Vernia’s three point shooting accuracy fell in that second half.

Drum finished the year with another double-double as she also snatched 10 rebounds to finish her career as a Hawk.

A few mistakes in that final minute of play sealed Canyon Lake’s loss, but this young team did make a good run for that final playoff spot.

Freshman and Sophomores have played an important roll for this year’s edition and with another year of maturity, this team can certainly become a force in the seasons to come.

Improvements with handling the ball as well as passing will certainly lower the turnover problem that plagued this team.

Two years ago, Kyndall Drum had a horrid free throw percentage and she worked on that part of her game and shot over 50% for her senior year.

Little things can become bigger for this team as a bigger finish next year will hopefully result in playoffs for Canyon Lake.

Thanks for your year and The ReSporter can hardly wait for next year’s edition.

============================================

Canyon Lake played their game with La Vernia much better than their last game, but the end result still was a loss to this very tall Bear’s team.

Junior Brandon Ward gets hot scoring 18 points in game with La Vernia

Junior Brandon Ward gets hot scoring 18 points in game with La Vernia

The Hawks had a better percentage of shooting from beyond the arc which helped CL in keeping this game closer than expected.

Junior Brandon Ward was on fire for this game as he finished with 18 points as his shots came from outside, while driving to the basket, and free throw line.

“I knew I was going to have my shot in warming up,” Ward said. “When I made my first three pointer then that just helped my confidence and allowed me to play at a higher level.”

Senior Garrett Winters was the other Hawk to finish in double figures scoring 10 point in the loss where Winters (70) also climbed up the 3 point shooting ladder by only trailing Andrew Riali (122) and Cole Green (77).

Canyon Lake did get into foul trouble as Ward and Skyler Tschoepe both sat on the pine as La Vernia went on a 13 point run starting in the first quarter and well into the second.

That cold spell helped La Vernia’s lead to grow into a game that would become a catch up affair for the rest of this game to the much taller Bear.

Canyon Lake will now have one more game this season with Yoakum next Tuesday at the Hawk Nest as this year’s edition will bow out with a chance to get three wins in district play.
