Basketball: Canyon Lake Girls Spotlight and Best All-Time Player

Girls Basketball is next on The ReSporters quest for giving you who based on leadership and playing

ability was the best in each sport as Canyon Lake will be graduating it’s third class this May.

Basketball just had a player that was tops in several categories and has just signed a scholarship to play Volleyball and Basketball.

Katie Williams certainly has the numbers to stake a claim for being the best Hawk in Basketball, but let’s break down some numbers and also see what other players have accomplished throughout the past seven years to get a good grasp of who the pick might be.

Three years ago, CL shocked the Basketball world when they improved 18 games and missed going to the second round by one point and three seconds.

That team will certainly have some nominees for having some well deserving players.

Megan Browning would certainly rank high as she is now playing basketball in Arkansas for Hendrix.

Browning ranks fourth in points scored with 428 and also ranks third in assists with 83 dishes to teammates.

Another player that would be considered a good candidate is Tiffany Arredondo who had the ability to dribble through trouble and presses as well.

Arredondo ranks first in assists (125) which attests to what a point guard should be noted for. Add her 90 steals and 332 points also would tell you how hard it would be to guard a player that can make you pay if you play off to help other players on the court.

Arredondo numbers were cut short when she was hurt before her Senior season and missing several games that would certainly cement her even more for this title of best player.

The ReSporter Needs its Ads to Keep ADding Up!!

Saturday, May 11th, 2013

The ReSporter is now in its fourth year of covering Canyon Lake and Bracken Christian schools. The ReSporter has just finished it’s 1,043rd article and has also had 62,039 visits and 162,238 pages read as of February 5, 2014 stats.

As you know, this site is free for those who would like to frequent these pages after a sporting event. The ReSporter would like to introduce you to a new ‘Ad’ that was added about 10 days ago.

First off, do know that many of the advertisers on this site services The ReSporter’s household and there is a great deal of comfort in knowing that these Companies and people would treat you as well as I am treated by their services.

The ReSporter needs the audience that relies on this coverage to help out by telling these companies/people that you saw their ‘Ad’ on this site.

That way The ReSporter can keep up this coverage as the fall season looms right around the corner.

The money that is raised through our Advertisers goes to gas money, cost for maintenance for this site, and hopefully enough to put away for just cost of living increases.

If this is not realized, then there is a chance that The ReSporter might close shop before the start of next school year.

Just making it known that letting the Advertisers know that they are seen on this site will certainly help with getting, by word of mouth, other companies to also think about advertising with The ReSporter.

Food That Might Need a Firefighter

Jerry Besselman has been a face that many fans have seen at any Hawk Sporting event that would involve refreshing your tastes.

The ReSporter went on a search to find someone that might have been to more games and events that wasn’t a player or Coach. Besselman fit that bill as the man behind the counter where you will find liquids or food to keep that Hawk fan strong enough to end the game and yelling on their Hawk team flavor of that event.

The ReSporter had an opportunity to get with Besselman at the end of a Hawk Softball game for a formal introduction to you the fan.

The ReSporter: Hey Jerry are you having fun?

Jerry Besselman: “Yes, I get to be around students and they all know my name.”

The ReSporter: Do they know you as Jerry or Besselman?

Jerry Besselman: “There was a time when Coach Nicole Creek needed to get a hold of me to change a time of a game or something like that and she was wanting to look up my phone number. She could not find me because she knew me by my first name. So yes, I’m thinking most of the students and teachers just know me by my first name.”

Basketball Coaches Corner with Lucas Chapman

Monday, March 4th, 2013

The ReSporter: Your first year as a Head Coach, what would you do differently as you prepare for next year?

Coach Chapman: “I don’t know if we will do a whole lot differently going forward. I would like to think that if we continue to just do the same things and just continue the process then the results will get better. We will always emphasize the fundamentals like shooting, passing and ball-handling and work on those things day in and day out. Strategically we will do some different stuff such as picking up the pressure on defense, but we are not going to stray too far from what we have started.”

The ReSporter: What is your overall assessment of this year’s team and season?

Coach Chapman: “Although the record and results may not indicate it, I thought we did some really good things this year. Most of all I am proud about how we played and how we conducted ourselves. We played the game the right way, acted right and represented Canyon Lake the right way. We had a really good stretch of games in December where we played at a high level. We also set some individual records for the program, and we finally won a district game. I think what we did this year was lay the foundation for the future and with the program where it is now, that’s what we needed.”

Hawks Basketball JV End Season with Loss, 51-39 to Bulldogs

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

The Canyon Lake JV ended their season in Bandera after suffering an anemic fourth quarter losing, 51-39.

That 12 point difference was much closer as the game was still within reach as Bandera started the last quarter up by two points, 34-32.

“We were able to keep it close for three quarters,” Coach Brian Hooper stated. “The biggest reason why the game got out of hand in the fourth, was in giving up to many rebounds.”

“Three possessions in a row Bandera had multiple shots on offense that led to easy buckets, and we couldn’t respond,” Coach Hooper closed. “Bandera had a big physical line up that wore us down in the fourth.”

Garrett Winters led all Hawk scorers with 12 points and Sean Nolan missed double digits with nine.

CL Freshman Pull a JV Game in Win over Bandera

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

by Coach Barthels

Canyon Lake started off slow, but great defense in the 2nd and 3rd quarters along with a strategic well played 4th quarter of scoring helped the CLHS Freshmen have a come from behind victory last night in Bandera, 45-43.

Trailing the entire game and down by seven early in the 4th, the Hawks mounted their comeback.

Scoring a quick four points off of steals by Hayden Lee and Joe Arredondo who found Brandon Ward streaking down the court for two uncontested lay-ups and a crucial 3 pointer by Justin Ferris, his only points of the game, tied it at
41.

The lead never belonged to the Hawks until their was 5.2 seconds left and Hayden Lee drew the defense into him and made a great pass to a streaking Mason Montgomery for a lay-up and the game winner.

With a turn over on the inbounds play the Hawks were able to get the ball back into Hayden Lee who was fouled for a 1 and 1. Missing the freethrow and placing everyone back to play defense had the Bandera Bulldogs driving down to the opposite end of the court forcing a three point shot over the back board sealing the victory for the Hawks.

Nine of the 12 Hawks that were dressed scored points, but even those that did
not score made great passes down low to the posts who were able to put up
25 points in the paint.

Big rebounds by Dalton Head, Hayden Lee, and Robert Woods will be a stat that gets over looked, but they all played a crucial role in sealing a victory and getting chances for the Hawks to set up the offense.

Canyon Lake finished the season 9-14 and 2-8 in district play,”We
played in several close games this year that we were not able to come out on
top in, this victory was a great way to end the season, I am proud of our
team for all of the hard work they put in this season,” Coach John Batthels closed.

Hawk Basketball Finish Season with Loss to Bandera, 40-31

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Canyon Lake could not even scare the basket in the first quarter as both teams combined for eight points, as the Hawks ended another season on a down note, losing 40-31 to Bandera.

Falling in love with the three point shot did not help matters as CL shot a dismal 12% from beyond the arc and those outside shots also resulted in only four free throws in this game.

Caleb Kreiger finished his season with 15 points and 9 rebounds on top of many records for his career played in just one season.

 Kreiger Finishes:

CL Varsity Lose Last Home Game to Billies, 54-43

Saturday, February 9th, 2013

Fredericksburg has taken their 3A status to heart as they will shoot and make 3pointers at will to bury a team.

Canyon Lake was in this game and made several runs at this Billie team but there was always an answer in the form of a three pointer and 99% of the time that shot would find the bottom of the net.

The Hawks did shoot in the 30% range throughout this contest which did not help when your opponent is shooting over 50% from that 3 point circle.

CL has one consolation in that Fredericksburg is not a 4A school giving them another point to add onto their scoring.

This was the last night for several Seniors that was in their last home game.

Chandler Faulkner is one of those players that gives several intangibles for the Hawks that won’t always show up in a stat line.

Coach Lucas Chapman has used Faulkner as his go to guy when needing to a shut down defensive (more…)

Hawk Freshman Leave too Many Points on Court, Lose 59-45

Saturday, February 9th, 2013

Canyon Lake Freshman suffered a subpar second quarter that was too much to rekindle in their loss to Fredericksburg, 59-45.

A three for fourteen from the field in that quarter was enough to bury the Hawks while Fredericksburg buried three pointer after three pointer.

Both teams were evenly matched for the other three quarters as Robert Woods once again had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Hayden Lee also had some very nice drives to the basket in helping to keep the Hawks close to their visitors.

Free throws were not free for CL as a 4-13 tally would indicate. Oh yeah, Fredericksburg does use that word ‘Free’ for their Throws.

“I am very proud of the way we played tonight,” Coach John Barthels opened. “This was the first game in a long time that we kept our composure against a press and we up tempo defensively.”

Canyon Lake did have some spurts getting Fredericksburg’s lead back into single digits.

“The score might not reflect good defense, but were where we needed to be initially and force them to be out of rhythm, unfortunately one of the two areas we did not do well was rebounding,” Coach Barthels finished. “We did get 29 points from our big men tonight and I am really looking forward to seeing this group develop next year.”
