Hawks Looking for Long Johns before next Contest

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013

Canyon Lake continues their cold streak that started at the end of their semester as the Lampasas Badgers make SnowHawks in, 63-29 win.

What was once a three game cushion (9-6) has now become a one game deficit (9-10) as this Hawk team will try to stop their skid this coming Friday when CL tips off against Blanco at Blanco High School.

It took four minutes before CL could sink a basket and the Hawks did not even get a shot off in the first three minutes of this contest.

If this would of been a Ski Slalom event, then not only was Canyon Lake playing in shorts (Cold…burrrr), but also going down the hill very fast. (Black Slope fast)

It took a Spencer Wellings three point bank shot as the first half horn sounded before your Hawks would break into double figures.

“We haven’t played a game in a week and a half,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “I used the whole bench trying to get our kids enough reps.”

Lampasas was a very athletic team that had played four games in a tournament after Christmas, but excuses will not lower the hurdle that is next on Canyon Lake’s schedule as District 27-3A looms in the very near future.

Layer your clothes when you ski and wear some long johns in this next game and hopefully this contest will start out much warmer with a better outcome.

Hawk’s Basketball Get Ready for District Play

Wednesday, December 26th, 2012

Canyon Lake’s quest for another playoff team will continue through this Winter and Spring.

Right now you have two promising scenarios with the Hawk Basketball programs.

The Girls and Boys teams have a legitimate chance to snag a T-Shirt company this coming season with help to design such a shirt.

Soccer has been tough to garner a playoff spot since this sport has been dominated by much larger schools since these teams play in a different district than CL’s other sports.

Because of a reduced number of teams that play that sport, the UIL combines 3A schools with 4A schools to crown a champion in Soccer each year.

The same is true for Canyon Lake’s Swimming team in having a district with larger schools. Another fact is that the Hawk Swimming program is still in it’s infancy stage and that makes competing in this tougher venue doubly hard.

Swimming also is much like Track and Field where playoffs are based on individuals in each event advancing instead of a Team getting in a bus for their next round of events after a District crowns a champion.

Canyon Lake has a few teams that have not had a chance to compete after a district race yet.

Hawk’s Free Throws prove Costly in Loss to NB Christian, 55-49

Friday, December 21st, 2012

The Canyon Lake Hawks had costly free throws in their loss to New Braunfels Christian Wildcats in their final game of this year losing, 55-49.

The Hawks barely outscored their second quarter in the second half as they went cold again during that time span.

“Being able to know how to score when we need to score is what we need to work on,” Coach Lucas Chapman exclaimed. “They (NB Christian) got us out of what we wanted to do.”

Canyon Lake was just three for 12 from the stripe in that second half and each miss would of either extended their lead or drawn the game closer during some very crucial segments of the game.

Andrew Riali had a spurt of three points in that second quarter giving your Hawks the lead going into halftime.

The Wildcats and Hawks were swashbuckling during the last minutes of the second quarter. Riali had nine points during a two minute stretch that helped give Canyon Lake a 30-27 lead at intermission.

Hawks Cold as Ice, Swept by La Vernia

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

Canyon Lake found themselves at the North Pole on Tuesday night in their games with La Vernia Bears.

In fact, La Vernia could change their mascot name to Polar Bears based on how cold the shooting was for how the Hawks played in their games at Hawk Gym.

The Freshman team was ‘As Cold as Ice’…sung by Foreigner several years ago scoring just two points in their first quarter and with seven total points by halftime.

The Junior Varsity did not do much better, finishing with 27 points in their game, just one more point scored by their Freshman counterparts.

Canyon Lake’s Varsity team fared a little better, but missed lay ups during the fourth quarter that doomed a game that had just 13 points in their two middle quarters.

The Varsity Hawks did speed the game up with a press during the fourth quarter,  that did lead to several chances of closing the gap, but their end result was no different than two other games that had teams with Hawks spelled across their jerseys.

Missed shots and opportunities were in abundance on this night. Canyon Lake’s final stats was dismal when combining all three teams:

Team FG Percentages Three Point Goals Free Throws
Freshman 10-46 21.7% 0-5 00.0% 6-22 27.3%
Junior Varsity 8-36 22.2% 1-7 14.3% 10-20 50.0%

Combined 33-129 25.6% 5-25 20.0% 23-55 41.8%

The ReSporter saw some Polar Bears in route to the Hawk gym after leaving.

Global Warming has been confirmed a hoax the Ice Age is another matter however.

Team Total Shots 3Point Free Throws
 Percentages Two Weeks Ago 36.7% 32.9% 39.2%
 Percentages Now 33.4% 31.4% 42.8%

All those percentages have gone down except for Canyon Lake’s free throws.

Shooting is important, but this team relies on three other items that have resulted in their bottom line: Winning.

Defense has been top notch throughout in all their games thus far. That one result can cover a multitude of shortcomings in a game. This Hawk team is a testament to that truism.

Another positive is how much the Hawks are cutting down on those pesky turnovers. Every time a turnover is avoided will give Canyon Lake another chance to score.

One more positive this team possesses is their knack for offensive rebounding. That one stat will allow that shooting percentage to actually be higher than it shows.

Canyon Lake averages right at 14 offensive rebounds per game which might be their most important number in that stat box.

Confidence is sprouting with each win and the emergence of Sophomore Kyndall Drum will pay dividends when district starts.

Hawks Finish 3-1 in Randolph Tournament

Saturday, December 15th, 2012

Canyon Lake had a statement game in a win over Navarro, 60-47 in the Randolph Tournament.

The Hawks have not won a district game in the past two years and even though this win does not count in District 27-3A play, it sure will play in the minds of a team that has been in the desert for way too long.

“We did a good job after breaking the press,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman stated. “We started getting good shots especially in the fourth when we only had two turnovers.”

CL started out lukewarm and then regressed to ice cold in this contest as the Hawks went into halftime trailing, 23-17 after a five point second quarter.

Canyon Lake went over six minutes counting the end of the first quarter before a free throw finally stopped a Navarro 13 point run. Caleb Kreiger had the only basket in this quarter with the Hawks going cold shooting 9%….ouch!!

During the second half, better than 50% from the floor had a different result on the scoreboard as CL reversed the game in their favor.

The Hawks made their statement starting the fourth quarter when they had a 12 point run and a lead for the remainder of this contest.

Andrew Riali had that feel again with an eight point barrage in a 1:12 seconds span in this quarter.

“I was feeling it,” Riali said warmly. “We started cold in the first half and the second half we got it going. You can’t make it if you don’t shoot it.”
