Hawks Boys Basketball Start Season with Loss to Cedar Creek

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Canyon Lake Boy’s Basketball tipped off their season last Tuesday night at Hawk gym against Stacey, in what proved to be a glorified scrimmage based on having one practice for many of these players.

“We played hard and we have had only one or two practices,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We haven’t had a lot of time to get our feet yet.”

Cedar Creek comes from a larger school setting, which gives those type of schools an upper hand against schools like Canyon Lake that has many players just now coming over from their football season.

The Hawks had a lead of 2-0, but that would be their last chance to be above water, as this Cedar Creek team had plenty of depth and continued to bring players from their bench that could exploit CL, which was just trying to find out who was playing where.

Coach Chapman also had 14 players that he was trying to find out what their skill set would be this early in the season.

Canyon Lake Senior Recognition

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

The ReSporter would like to finish this year’s sports campaign by

Senior Missy Romero

recognizing three Seniors that were covered by this website.

Last Thursday night, Canyon Lake Coaches announced their winners at a Banquet for the Track, Baseball, Golf, and Softball teams during the spring awards night.

Missy Romero, Matt Magness, and Zach Henshaw were the three students recognized by their Coaches as Seniors that were the outstanding athlete for this academic year.

Missy Romero literally kept the Softball program in the circle the past four years.

Softball was one of the last team sports to make the playoffs last season, when they not only qualified for the playoffs, but was the first team to ever finish second in District competition.

Romero has set the standard for CL Softball for years to come, as she signed on with Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Mississippi before the season was in full gear.

Hawk Basketball: Then there was One

Head Basketball Coach Jeff Maynard

Canyon Lake Basketball is down to just one Coach after Head Coach Jeff Maynard made the announcement that this would be his last year on the bench.

The Hawks had known about JV Coach David Bentzen leaving at the end of basketball season and a couple of months of silence was met with this news out of the blue.

When asked about the decision to leave, Coach Maynard was quick with an answer, “Family! Spending time with my kids and seeing her (my daughter’s) games…Coaching would not give me that opportunity. I will be working for Farm Bureau Insurance and I’m local, born and raised. So this deal was too good to pass up.”

Coach Maynard continued, “It’s going to be tough, but I have been thinking about a change and it was very coincidental and this deal for me that just seemed right. I did not want to kick myself if I missed the years of watching my children growing up. Coaching from football to basketball takes a lot of time from the family.”

Now Canyon Lake has made the quick decision and moved Freshman Coach Lucas Chapman up to Head Coach.

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

The ReSporter had a chance to get some last thoughts from Head Coach Jeff Maynard

Basketball Coach Jeff Maynard

on the recent end of season for the 2012 Basketball season.

The ReSporter: “Canyon Lake finished this season by giving up 10 points per game less than any previous season. What did this team do differently than previous clubs to reach that number?”

Coach Maynard: ”I think that this team really bought into our defensive philosophy and once they saw the success they were having—it became fun for them. The other big difference in this team was their desire to play defense. That is something we have been trying to find with our kids and I think we have found it.”

The ReSporter: “The Hawks also finished this campaign with 170 fewer turnovers than the previous record in 2010-11 season. How did this accomplishment factor into this season?”

Coach Maynard: ”We told the boys all year that if they played great defense and took care of the ball, that they would put themselves in a position to be successful. We did a great job all year of staying patient.”

Canyon Lake finished another disappointing season as the Hawks said good-bye to nine of the 12 players on this years edition after posting a hard fought loss to district champion Boerne Greyhounds.

The Hawks were ahead with five minutes left in the second quarter, 17-16, but that lead was lost after a Greyhound 9-0 run and an eight point halftime lead.

Boerne finished district with an unblemished record and Canyon Lake would need to have an overall perfect game to complete the upset bid.

“I’m very proud of the boy’s,” Head Coach Jeff Maynard started. “They could of gone out and choked it up and they didn’t.”

“This is the first team that left an impression with their defense and that focus helped the younger players in our program.”

The Bracken Warriors spotted State Ranked Austin Waldorf to 18 points to start the game before playing even steven the next three quarters.

It is a maturity thing and we had to prove it to ourselves.”

BCS decided to start playing with two seconds left in the first quarter as Conner Higgins sank a baseline floater to start the scoring.

“Coach (James Johnson) wanted to run a pick and row in the second half,” Senior Higgins said. “This year was a lot of fun and we thought we had a chance to make the playoffs.”

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Canyon Lake Boys Basketball continued on its spiral through District 26-3A, after spotting Wimberley 17 points through the first three quarters and running out of gas losing, 64-55.

Two of the last three games, the Hawks have scored over 25 points in the fourth quarter and both time have resulted in the same outcome, a loss.

The Tuesday night game did have Canyon Lake close enough for a one possession game, but never could get to the top of the mountain.

Matt Magness started the fourth quarter with a five point spurt and after two made free throws from Brandon Belcher, the Hawks were down only 11 points with over six minutes left in the game.

Magness brought the home team within single digits, 51-43 a minute later and Wimberley Coach could be seen checking for a towel to wipe sweat off his brow.
