Coach Paisley doing what she does best: Motivate

Coach Paisley doing what she does best: Motivate

The ReSporter: What do you do different this year compared to last year when you had so many girls that had so much experience?

Coach Paisley: “Well, no matter what group you have and how experienced they are, we give them every opportunity and push them to be the best they can be. We lost 7 seniors after this season, but we as coaches will challenge and push our athletes to be the competitive athletes. We are never the exact same year to year, and we have a totally new dynamic of a team this upcoming season. We will be teaching on a more tactical level with game situations and really express the “why’s” behind what we are teaching.”

The ReSporter: What have you seen so far that has made you say this could be another good year?

Coach Paisley: “We are the same Hawk team as far as expectations are concerned, but I have seen some great strides the girls have made through the offseason and club season. We really do have some great returners and some great kids that are up to the challenge filling in the holes left by this past year’s seniors.” (more…)

The ReSporter: What are your overall thoughts after District Meet?

Track and Field Coach Troy Moses

Coach Moses: “I was very proud of the performance from all of our athletes.  We set 4 school records and everybody gave their best performances of the year.  I don’t think you can ask for more.”

The ReSporter: Why was our district meet a week earlier than most other districts?

Coach Moses: “The coaches in the district decided to move the date up to give us more time to prepare for Area and Regionals.”

The ReSporter: When you have two weeks before the next meet what do you do different with the qualifiers?

Coach Moses: “It is a huge advantage, this week we will be doing some heavy training while others are preparing for their district meet.  Next week we will back off again to make sure we are ready for Area.” (more…)

The ReSporter: What are your overall thoughts after District Meet?

GO HAWKS!!

GO HAWKS!!

Coach Barthels: “My overall thoughts on the district track meet are that we participated at a much higher level than we have all year.  Other schools did as well, resulting in us placing 4th place instead of first, but we had about 90% of the girls run a better time than they have run all year and that is what is asked of them. “

The ReSporter: Why was our district meet a week earlier than most other districts?

Coach Barthels: “We meet and agree a year in advance as to when we will have district meets.  There is a set date that you must have district finished and if you have bad weather it gets crazy, doing things this way allows more time to get ready for the area and then regional meets as opposed to running district and then the next week have area and then the next week regionals.  It is going to help me as we have a couple of girls banged up right now and this will give us more time to heal and be at our best.”

The ReSporter: Right now you are in the midst of figuring out a chess match. What is the biggest challenge as you enter the names for next week’s Meet?
Coach Moses: “This is a unique year, just because we have so many talented young men. The biggest challenge is not knowing what the other schools are going to do!!!! There are so many different scenarios. We just have to go with what we feel will help us get as many points as possible.”

The ReSporter: The scrimmage yesterday hopefully answered some questions for what happens next week, can you give us some idea of how closer you are to figuring out how you will run the Relays vs. Open Events?
Coach Moses: “Our number one goal is to win the Team Championship!! We look to score big points in Open Events first, then place people in relays.” (more…)

Go Hawks!!

                        Go Hawks!!

The ReSporter: This is when you earn the Big Bucks, how hard is it in putting the athletes with the events?

Coach Barthels: “This is the time that we take each girl’s strengths and put them in events that can keep as many girls continuing to the area meet as possible.”

The ReSporter: How do you differentiate between running as an individual vs. putting that person on a relay team?

Coach Barthels: “Everyone wants to win the relays, I am guilty as well, but when you look at numbers and points it gets dicey. Four of your fastest girls can get a total of 20 points on a relay, If you were to use those girls in individual events and could place 1-4 that is worth 28 points…not that you could do that, but it is something I consider when putting girls in events for district. We compare times and combinations of girls that have run the relays and figure which girls can A. Get the points you need and B. Place in the top 4 spots to move on to the next meet. So I have a lot of work to do between now and Sunday when our entries are due.” (more…)

Head Girl’s Soccer Coach Ryan Tierney

The ReSporter wanted to have a talk with Soccer’s Coach Ryan Tierney after another Hawk team made the playoffs.

Canyon Lake has 4 Team Sports for girls and with the Girl’s Track Team this has been a good year for the ladies as all have embarked on a quest of finishing their regular season for an opportunity in playing more games.

The ReSporter: What has been your biggest surprise this season with this team?

Coach Tierney: “It is absolutely the way they overcome adversity. All season long they have been faced with obstacles and great opponents and they have never given up and have stepped up in those occasions. These girls have a physical toughness and they love to compete. I enjoy all their efforts and praise all that they sacrifice and commit.”

The ReSporter: How does the district you are in compare to the other districts? (more…)

Softball’s Coach John Gallagher

The ReSporter caught up with Head Coach John Gallagher after the Hawk’s loss to Yoakum last week.

The ReSporter: What is the answer to all of those pesky errors for this team?

Coach Gallagher: “All 8 of our errors were either from a lack of concentration or lack of confidence. All the errors were on routine plays that we make everyday in practice or in games. They have been addressed and worked on in practice.”

The ReSporter: You have pitching that seems to be excelling as you enter into district play. I know you would like to be firing with all of your weapons, between gloves and bat, which one is more important to get wins with pitching being the constant?

Coach Gallagher: “Our defensive play is more important at this point. We have been productive offensively so when our defense is solid we win.” (more…)

Go Hawks!!

           Go Hawks!!

The ReSporter: Tell me if the girls or you have realized yet that this is the first team win for any track event for the Lady Hawks, what are your thoughts on that accomplishment?

Coach Barthels: “I thought that this was the first time that the girls had won a track meet, but I knew for sure it was the first time that the boys and girls varsity teams had won together. Turns out it was both.”

The ReSporter: How close are you to getting to know what each girls strengths are?

Coach Barthels: “I know what their strengths are, we are just now starting to see them believe in themselves to show those strengths.”

The ReSporter: This is probably the most depth the Hawks have had as they scored in 13 of the 16 events, what has happened in order to get to this level? (more…)

The ReSporter: What are your overall impressions as you have 3 Meets in the books?

Track and Field Coach Troy Moses

Coach Moses: “I can tell you that we have a bunch of young men that want to improve and they don’t mind working hard to get there. So far we have improved with each performance and that is exciting as we get closer to district.”

The ReSporter: How do you approach a Meet like you had in Dripping Springs when you were one of the smallest schools in attendance?
Coach Moses: “We tell the kids that Track is different than other sports. For us there is only one meet that really counts and that’s the District Meet, all other are just practice meets and we are just competing against ourselves to try to better our times each week. So when you go into a meet like that your really not concerned with what those around you are doing. With that said, I thought our kids preformed out standing against the BIGGER schools.”

The ReSporter: I know you look on how you can maximize your points is that a process that continues until the day of the District Meet? (more…)

The ReSporter caught up with Boy’s Soccer Coach Warren Graham as the first round of district games are coming to a close after tonights game with Wimberley.

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, give us an idea of how you assess the team and prepare them for the round of district games.

Coach Graham: “We record all of our games, so reviewing film is a big part of preparation as you enter the second round.  The boys try to learn tendencies of the other team, see what we did that worked well against them, and learn from the mistakes we made in the first round.  We then take what worked well and develop drills in practice to reinforce that so they feel comfortable going into the next game.”

The ReSporter: This district is not an easy group of games for the Hawks, tell us about the competition. (more…)
