Canyon Lake's Addison Farley scoring a kill during Cuero game

Canyon Lake’s Addison Farley scoring a kill during Cuero game

The ReSporter: What are your thoughts as you have just completed this season from the regular season games and then your district games?

Coach Pailsey: “I’m excited, happy, and very proud of the girls, from Freshmen, JV, to Varsity! All of the girls worked hard and continue to work hard!!! This has been an incredible season and a season full of more goals accomplished and history in the making!”

The ReSporter: What is your focus as you look at the upcoming playoff season?

Coach Paisley: “We will keep our schedule and plan consistent and routine as possible, while still being flexible to the quick turn around that occurs throughout the playoffs. The girls are focused and we still have goals to obtain. We are hitting it hard on defense and  sharpening our offense. We will be ready to compete and I know the girls will give 110% each match!” (more…)

The ReSporter was able to get with a busy Coach Paisley as this year’s squad is working on a perfect district slate. Go to the updated Standings article and you will see how Navarro needed to go 5 sets in disposing La Vernia and Wimberley lost in 5 sets to upstart Cuero team.

The ReSporter: Does going through the district on the 2nd round give teams a good idea of how they have progressed? What are signs besides wins and losses that help you gauge that idea.

Coach Paisley: “I look at how we execute offensively and defensively in comparison to the first round’s execution. I like to look for strategic execution based off film study, and that is rewarding as a coach to see when your team takes from what they learned and apply it successfully during the match.”

The ReSporter: On that same note, when you look at this year’s team, how good your team is can be based on placing CL at this moment back during the Tournament season and asking yourself, which games would we win with this team now, so how many of those losses would be counted as wins? (more…)

The ReSporter: You went primary with the 5-1 offense in Navarro. You mentioned last week that you would do this against teams like Navarro. Why is that?

Coach Paisley: “I ran a 5-1 offense all 3 sets of Navarro match because the 5-1 offense is more fluid and consistent offensively. Our hitters are connecting more.”

The ReSporter: “We also noticed you started the match with a kill from Emma Gray with a set to the outside…it seemed to make a statement. Was that a special play or are you implementing for offensive sets with that play as an option?”

Coach Paisley: “That set is part of our serve receive and it is a “special” play!” (more…)

Unknown-8

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, congratulations on the win last week. Could you tell us how the practices have gone this week after that win over Wimberley?

Coach Drum: “There has been a lot more enthusiasm and you can tell the difference the way they start each day. It was like being paid for all the hard work you have done and they finally got the fruits from all that hard labor.”

The ReSporter: That had to be one of the largest crowds in Hawk history.

Coach Drum: “Yeah, our stadium holds 6000 and the last time I saw the stands like that was 5 years ago when we were playing Wimberley and we were both undefeated.”

The ReSporter: That game had to be a confidence builder for the team, especially Ben Fulton after the first half had all the negative things happening.

Coach Drum: “We talked at halftime to just settle down and he (Fulton) shoulders a lot of blame but our offense has so many other parts that are not based on the quarterback and so we just decided to have a safe pass to start the second half.” (more…)

The ReSporter: What is your thinking on where the team is as district play starts?
Coach Paisley: “We handled business in 3 sets and 1-0 is a great start. I felt we had a rusty start in game 1 due to being off for a week, but we got back on track and will continue to lay the hammer and compete.”

The ReSporter: What are some things that need to be shored up as you proceed?
Coach Paisley: “We must be more consistent with our serve receive and defense. Everything begins with a pass. Must be sharp and consistent as we head on from there and our offense will fall into place and be more consistent.”

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, when I think about your career at Canyon Lake your first job was Defensive Coordinator….I was thinking what did it feel like watching last week’s game?

Coach Drum: “It was very uncomfortable….I told the defense that you tend to think you got blown out yet we were in the game the whole night. Sometimes you have shoot-outs and sometimes the score is 14-0. We just got to figure out how to win these close games and come up with a big play.”

The ReSporter: What did you talk about in the halftime locker room?

Coach Drum: “I told the defense that they needed to come up with 3 stops to win and we only had one but still had a chance to win the game.”

The ReSporter had some time to talk with Head Coach Hosea Stredic at Bracken Christian after their first loss of the season this week.

The ReSporter: What will you do to get the younger players on your squad ready for their first road game with The Winston?

Coach Stredic: “I will let them know that although we are going for a ride, it is just another room in our big house. It is our home wherever we go and play.”

The ReSporter: How will you go through your week realizing that you will have to address many of the things that went wrong in the game with Austin Hill Country?

Coach Stredic: “We will practice as planned….Get back into our routine, and we will be fine.” (more…)

The ReSporter: I know you are young and starting a Sophomore at QB, what do you do to help his passing as he does not seem to have found his touch.

Coach Drum: “We just need to get him comfortable….he had good games in the scrimmages and now he is in real time friday night lights. He is trying to make the perfect pass and he will become more of a threat with more throwing.”

The ReSporter: You have already seen several key players go down with an injury, how will you adjust as this season continues?

Coach Drum: “Injuries are part of the game and sometimes you have better years and sometimes you don’t. We had Gordon (McCleary) go down last week and that had us bring up (Austin) Rodriguez up from the freshman team.” (more…)

This is an exciting time for Cross Country at Canyon Lake as last year the Boy’s team qualified for the post season for the first time.

CC lost some runners but a restocking of more good athletes looks in the offing as we catch up with Coach Gallagher.

The ReSporter: Another tough game with Blanco, last season you changed some personnel after that loss…will you be making some changes this week?

Coach Drum: “Not as much, the effort was there and the mistakes can be taken care of. We wanted to see their set and they (the players) did the same thing.”

The ReSporter: That old adage of how a team improves from game one to game two, what are your thoughts.

Coach Drum: “They did well and we had a lot of improvement from the last scrimmage to the game with Blanco. They get it, were they perfect? No! But I like what I saw.” (more…)
