CL Hawks: Coaches Corner with Lucas Chapman

Thursday, January 1st, 2015

The ReSporter: How can you find that hot player on any given game? Or, what is needed by this group to find that scoring?

Coach Chapman: “We are not a team that has a go to player so to speak. We have some guys who are capable of scoring some points on any given night, but it’s probably not going to be the same guy every night. We have to have scoring contributions from multiple individuals. We are continuing to implement our offense and get more confident and comfortable in it. When we run and execute what we work on, we can score effectively, but when we try to do our own thing we struggle at times. We just have to trust what we are doing and trust each other. If everyone does their job then we will succeed as a team.”

The ReSporter: “The ReSporter has also notice that the hustle plays are not showing up, yes, they are probably hustling, but looking at steals/assists…etc…many of the players are finding it hard to get to the free throw line or getting steals…what do you need in these stats that will lead to more scoring?

Coach Chapman: “From a defensive perspective we have not played with consistent effort and energy. We need to do a better job of being active with our feet and hands to deflect passes, contest shots and disrupt what the offense is doing. The games where we have put up points we have turned the offense over which has created easy scoring opportunities for us. We will probably look to pressure and mix it up defensively as we get into district play, which hopefully will help us more with that. Offensively, we need to be more aggressive. We always talk about getting the ball in the paint with the pass or dribble. Our goals are to get score 30 points in the paint and make at least 10 Free Throws a game. When we do those things we have been successful. We just need to put more pressure on the defense and not take bad shots or settle for jumps shots all game long.”

The ReSporter: What is known about the district this year team wise?

Coach Chapman: “Our district is much different this year. We only have Navarro and Wimberley with us from year’s past. From what I have seen Wimberley is the favorite and then everyone else will be fighting for 2nd, 3rd & 4th place. It is wide open right now. I really like our chances. We obviously have to play better and continue to improve, but if we can play to our potential we have a real good shot at the playoffs.”

The ReSporter: What have you seen that is positive for CL as you enter into this season’s games?

Coach Chapman: “We have seen glimpses of times this year when we play to our ability, and we have looked really good. When we take care of the ball and share the ball on offense we can score. When we play with great effort and energy on the defensive side of the floor we can get after people. I just think that our best is yet to come. We have seen signs from time to time, and I anticipate that we will see a lot more of it in the weeks to come.”

The ReSporter: What will the Hawks need to do game wise to realize a spot in the playoffs?

Coach Chapman: “We have to just trust and believe in our ability, and how we want to play. We need to find some consistency and rhythm on offense. We need to be strong with the basketball and not turn it over. On defense, we must lock teams down. We have to play with more passion and effort on defense. That is our identity, and we have to buy into it and play to it. We can certainly make a run in district. We just have to continue to improve each day and reach our potential.”

The ReSporter: Thanks Coach for your time for this Holiday Season, good luck as district starts next week.

Bracken’s Head Coach Lloyd Fields Announces his Retirement

Sunday, November 30th, 2014

Bracken Christian will bid farewell to a Coach who has roamed the sidelines for the past seven years.

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

BCS had just finished their first winning season with a 9-3 campaign and it was a quick turnaround from that first one win season the year before.

Giving up 500 points that first year was sure an eye opener, but those eyes would be opened wider when this Warrior team started winning at a regular clip.

Coach Lloyd Fields was entering in the front door for a school that would reach the highest of rarefied air when their 2010 season found themselves on top of the heap in 6-man football.

Fields had started his coaching career in 1969 when he was student teacher at Texarkana, Arkansas.

After a brief stint in the Marine Corp, he once again would come back to coaching in Lufkin as a junior high coach.

His first head coaching job would be in Waco at Richfield High School that is now known as Waco High.

Coach Fields first year at Bracken, fell one game short, of their previous season’s record and with a 1-1 playoff slate.

Meeting the eventual runner-up for State in that season, Rockwall Heritage, to start those playoffs was not a good way to make your mark in your first year.

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, I heard it will be raining this Saturday, who does that favor if anyone?

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Coach Fields: “Yeah, I heard there might be a 100% chance of rain. I don’t think it will make any difference, the field is turf and so that would make it equal for both teams.”

The ReSporter: You had a tough game last time you faced Austin Veritas…what are your thought about this week’s game?

Coach Fields: “I know that they were excited when they got off the bus for our game and we were coming off a bye week and I just felt like they were a lot more fired up than our team…I just don’t know what their mind set will be when they play us this week.”

The ReSporter: You had a game last week in the first round and you have mentioned in the past how you like to play a game and not take a week off before the playoffs start…

Coaches Corner with Canyon Lake’s Charley Drum

This is certainly a big week for the Hawks and The ReSporter had a chance to catch up with Coach Drum for this week’s edition of the Coaches Corner.

The ReSporter: Can Coach Moses read minds better than his coaching friends from Rockport?

Coach Drum: “Yeah, they will know our offense, but we can be a little more diverse than they are. We kind of have something to compare.”

The ReSporter: Do you know if Rockport-Fulton played a team that runs the slot-t?

Coach Drum: “I don’t think they did.”

The ReSporter: Well, when I think back on last year in our game with Navarro, you could tell that they were just more advanced with this type of offense both defensively and offensively in our game with them.

Coaches Corner with Volleyball’s Kimberley Paisley

Friday, November 14th, 2014

The ReSporter: First off you overall thoughts on this past year…

Coach Paisley: “The season started off with goals that we as a team set as soon as the teams were made (during

two-a-days). The goals we discussed were navigated by me because I believed the things we discussed were very attainable for this group of hard working young ladies. I knew we could be co-champs, district champs, or second place in our district. I knew we were making the playoffs and going 2-3 deep in playoffs. I knew school records would be broken. When I hung the “Gold Ball” in their face (which is a trophy that will have their names on it) they were hungry and dead set on attaining these goals.”

The ReSporter: Second, what would you like to say about the Seniors on this past year’s roster?

Coach Paisley: “They were ready to make their last year memorable. They believed in their team and the program and wanted to leave a legacy. They wanted to build tradition.”

The ReSporter: What will be your goals for next year’s team and how will that be realized? (more…)

Coaches Corner with Bracken’s Lloyd Fields:

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, hope your week is going well…speaking of which how has this week been going for the team?

Bracken Christian's Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Bracken Christian’s Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Coach Fields: “This will be the first time in a long while that we will have everyone ready and dressed for this week’s game.”

The ReSporter: That is certainly good to hear….what do you know about Conroe?

Coach Fields: “They have a number 15 that is a big boy and he and the team will run right at ya….they will get into some spread but for the most part they are a tight offense.”

The ReSporter: What else is there to know?

Coach Fields: “They are not very fast and they would remind you a lot of Temple team we played in our first game this season.”

The ReSporter: What is a key to this week’s game for Bracken?

Coach Fields: “We need to jump on them early and we can’t afford any turnover’s but if we can get a lead early then we have a chance of winning.” (more…)

The ReSporter: Tell us where the team is mentally and physically for this week’s game?

Coach Drum: “We are pretty healthy, we have some nicks, but this is probably the best we have been health wise for this season.”

The ReSporter: I know Ian May was hurt last week, what is his status?

Coach Drum: “Ian had a season ending surgery and so he will be our only starter out for this game.”

The ReSporter: Who do you have to take May’s spot in the line?

Coach Drum: “We will probably have Freshman Jacob Foster.”

The ReSporter: Tell us about Waco LaVega.

Coach Drum: “They run a spread offense and they are young and fast….they are faster than Taylor and they have more kids that can move.” (more…)

The ReSporter: Hey Coach how has this week’s practices been going in preparation for the Boerne game this week?

Coach Drum: “Going good.”

The ReSporter: What are some things your team will have to focus on going into this game?

Coach Drum: “We have to tackle them…If we allow Dormady (Boerne’s QB) to sit back like a game of 7 on 7, then he is pretty good.”

The ReSporter: Boerne not only had a good quarterback but his number one target is also a great weapon for them.

Coach Drum: “We will try to bracket him, but they have other receivers that will hurt you…they all can catch the ball, we will just need to limit those big plays.”
