Coaches Corner with Bracken’s Lloyd Fields

The ReSporter: Give us an idea of this week’s game with Kerrville OLH.Coach Lloyd Fields

Coach Fields: “Both teams are going to score a bunch of points….this series has produced some high scoring affairs and I don’t see this week’s game being any different.”

The ReSporter: Give me an idea about how good OLH is if they were held to just six points in their loss to Fredericksburg Heritage?

Coach Fields: “Their super back was not playing in that game, he was injured, he is #2 and is very good back and can be hard to get to defensively.”

The ReSporter: What else do you know about this player?

Coach Fields: “He is a better passer than runner, but he will make you pay either way.”

The ReSporter: How have your practices been going this week?

Coaches Corner with Canyon Lake’s Charley Drum

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, you have mentioned how each of the district games are like rounds in a boxing

match. How do you motivate your team when this next round is with a team that has not won a game this year?

Coach Drum: “First of all, Taylor is in the same shoes we were in last year when we entered district play without a win and lost our first game with Fredericksburg. We fought our way back into the playoffs and so our players need to realize this team is fighting like we did last season. Also, in Taylor’s game with Liberty Hill, they almost won that game and so they will realize that this team has the ability to beat us if we aren’t ready.”

The ReSporter: The team has certainly cut down on those turnovers in their last few games….is this something that you have emphasized or was a lot of those problems was just the weather and wet ball?

Coach Drum: “We will need to have execution and many times it is just a mental thing….so, we need to keep that part of our game with taking care of the ball.”

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions….How many total yards have you thought that would mean the Hawks had a good offensive game?

Head Coach Charley Drum

Coach Drum: “We feel if we can get reach 300 yards or more then we have had a decent outing. If we have 250 yards of rushing then that will give us a good chance for a win.”

The ReSporter: In your game last week you did not reach that goal for total yardage yet you still put a ‘W’ on the record sheet.

Coach Drum: “We did some good things with other parts of our game like our Special Teams and Defense…Cody (Thompson) and Tommy (Clark) both played good games last week….Tommy has been one of our most consistent players and those interceptions were a key to that win.”

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, it is hard to find information out about teams and we would like to know what type of offense Concordia will run this Friday?

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Coach Fields: “They run a tight pistol and take their snap about five yards behind the center. They are mainly a running team but will pass, but the most of their offense is the run game.”

The ReSporter: What else would be good to know about this team?

Coach Fields: “This team is where Bracken was back in 2006 as this is their first football team at the school. So, they don’t have any Seniors, but we don’t have any Juniors.”

The ReSporter: So, will it be the younger class of players that will make or break this game?

Coach Fields: “No, we still have Seniors and I hope they will be the difference in this game…but our Freshman have had to grow up fast this year….in previous seasons, our Freshman for the most part have stood on the sideline with me. Now they are getting a lot of playing time and starts from this group of players.”

The ReSporter: You have another top team coming to Bracken this Friday.

Coach Fields: “Yeah, they are the defending State Champion and we have everything to gain and nothing to lose….we just need to go and play football.”

The ReSporter: Facing Austin Veritas and Castle Hills gives you a perspective on two of the premier teams in your division…

Coach Fields: “I would pay to see the game between those two school’s game. I would say that Veritas just has more weapons….Castle Hills is very talented but their supporting cast is just not as strong as what I have seen in the Veritas team.”

The ReSporter: So, tell us what Bracken will need to do in the game Friday night with Castle Hills?

The ReSporter: Congrats on your game tonight…here are some questions for our next Coaches Corner.

Coach Paisley: “Thank you!!!! It was a fun match!!! We needed this match. Everyone got to play, everyone played well and stayed at our level…even with the change up in liberos and lineups!!! We were strong last night.”

The ReSporter: Navarro game will be a playoff game atmosphere for your group this Friday. What are you wanting to see in your team as they take the Panthers on?

Coach Paisley: “I expect us to come out strong and ready to play. We need to remind Navarro that WE are in second place and will remain undefeated against them this season!!!”

The ReSporter: How would you assess this team as you have seen them from their first game with Schertz to the Gonzales game?

Coach Paisley: “This varsity group has stayed thirsty from the beginning of season and until this point. We need to continue and carry this thirst into the playoffs. I always say we start strong, stay strong, and will finish strong!”

Coaches Corner with Bracken’s Head Coach Lloyd Fields

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, was there a difference in this week’s of practices after losing your first game last week?

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Coach Fields: “No difference, this is probably the most unemotional group of players that I have ever had at Bracken…they are very workmanlike. These guys are in survival mold and are just fortunate that they are still playing.”

The ReSporter: You mention the number of players you have, what does that do for the players as they are playing, in many cases, the whole game?

Coach Fields: “There is no middle ground with these players. They are unscathed….their lack of numbers is starting to catch up with then but this is a new era in Bracken as we have many players that are just trying to stay healthy. This is all we got and the younger players are all trying.”

The ReSporter: How are you approaching this week’s game with New Braunfels Christian?

The ReSporter: If you could play Kerrville Tivy again with the team you have right now, what would your result be? (Hawks were beaten by Tivy in their very first tournament in the championship game)

Coach Paisley: “We definitely would play better defense at the net and our offense would execute more efficiently.”

The ReSporter: What has happened this year that has allowed this team to make such a turn around from last season?

Coach Paisley: “As soon as season ended last year, this group of girls set their own personal goals, (I had no prompting in this for them), to work hard in offseason, attend amazing meaningful camps, play club ball all spring, join summer league, and attend open gym/private lessons all summer!”

Coaches Corner with Volleyball’s Kim Paisley:

The ReSporter: What are your thoughts about where Canyon Lake is now compared to the beginning for the season?

Junior Hannah Wunderlich showing how limber she is.

Coach Paisley: Varsity: “We started off the season with good intensity, and with having played 25 matches in less than a month and school starting, we began to experience some challenges and new elements. I definitely feel we are back on track and getting a bit more rest now that Varsity’s tournaments season is complete.”

Subvarsity: “They are both working very hard from the beginning of the season and up to this point. We are seeing a lot of personal development and maturity from the players, and discovering leaders as the season progresses.”

The ReSporter: Have you been pleased about your tournament play?

Coach Paisley: “The Varsity has brought home hardware from all three tournaments this year! We definitely gained many learning experiences, playing time for all, and we have developed our mental toughness.”

“The Subvarsity tournament will be in Wimberley next Thursday and Saturday, for their Tex-Fest.”

The ReSporter: Hey Coach have you had a chance to get that ‘blahh’ feeling after last week’s scrimmage during this week’s practices out of your system?

Coach Fields: “Yes and no, today’s practice was better but the bottom line is that we are still young and we are just trying to fight through it.”

The ReSporter: Is it hard for a crowded field football team to transition to 6-Man?

Coach Fields: “I don’t know, I have never been in that position but many times it is hard for an 11-Man to play 6-Man with 11-Man tactics.”
