Coaches Corner with Canyon Lake’s Charles Drum

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

The ReSporter: Last year it was the special teams that resulted in some early season loses…what is the Head Coach Charley Drum 100_1535status of this squad this year?

Coach Drum: “We have spent more time on special teams in fact, our work out is during the middle of the day now and that is all we worked on today.”

“Ian Acosta will be our kick-off and extra point player this year and we also have Mike Thorp who plays soccer on the JV and he has a chance of moving up.”

“Nick Cahill will be our punter.”

The ReSporter: I would think that the pre/district games would be used as an audition for special teams starters.

The ReSporter: The Castle Hills scrimmage was an eye opener.Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Coach Fields: “Castle Hills was the best scrimmage team we have ever played…We are a work in progress and the quicker we grow up the better we will be.”

The ReSporter: What set that Castle Hills squad different than those other scrimmages?

Coach Fields: “That was the best back we have faced since Walker with Kerrville OLH two years ago. We are not as fast as we used to be…we have have run out of preparation time and we are not there yet, we had four weeks now (of practice) and we could use two more weeks, but the season starts this Friday ready or not.”

The ReSporter: What have you done as a result of last week’s game?

Coach Fields: “We have taken Davis Scott from defensive end to linebacker and moved John Colby from linebacker to x-backer and Jeff Camp from x-backer to defensive end and now we will retool.”

Coach Fields: “Very pleased with the defense…our defense will hit you. Our x-backer (Jeff Camp) and our defensive ends controlled the line.”

The ReSporter: What happened offensively?

Coach Fields: “Our offense was hit and miss, but we got better as the night went on. Our spread offense is still a work in progress and we might have a power spread.”

The ReSporter: Where are you compared to this time last year?

Coach Paisley: “Week one started off rocky Tuesday, but rolled around at Tesfest. (Wimberley’s Tournament) The energy and togetherness came and we picked up our level of play. We had a ton of growth during those two days.”

The ReSporter: What is your quest as you proceed from here?

Coach Paisley: “Our quest is getting better every week…getting primed for district. The more competitive we play each week, will only prepare us for our district.”

Bracken Football: Check Mate

Uncertain future would be the theme this year as Bracken Warriors prepare

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

for their two team scrimmage this Friday.

“Everything is in flux,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said. “Our offense is still a work in progress and we are starting over from square one.”

The Warriors have been ahead of the curve these past three years with a returning QB Eli Achilles calling the signals. All three of those years had that returning quarterback.

Now BCS has replaced those three years of experience for three quarterbacks vying for a chance to call the signals.

“All the positions are open,” Coach Fields fielded.

There is one given for this year’s team and that would be the Warriors tight offensive set. Bracken has some proven entities in that formation which will give Coach Fields a softer pillow on Friday nights after games.

“We have a Sophomore center Gunnar Stolhandske who proved himself last season as a freshman and he has continued to improve. Then having Goober (Preston Koch) and Davis Scott back as Seniors makes this our gold standard,” Coach Fields elaborated.

Saturday gave fans a good idea of what might be expected when Friday’s roll around in the Fall.

One thing is for certain. The players like this offense and that excitement can be seen in settings like was played out on Saturday.

“You could tell they were doing something new and for the first time at full speed,” Offensive Coordinator Moses parted. “Taking that into consideration we did pretty good today.”

Canyon Lake will have to be a quick study with this offense as the will soon be upon us.

Two scrimmages and then Blanco to open the season at home August 30th or in 20 days.

The first week is over and at the last time The ReSporter had a conversation

Bracken's Warriors get Offensive

with Head Coach Lloyd Fields he still had all of his players accounted for.

That is a very important item when you are covering 6-man Football.

Having enough players can let you know if you can even field a team for many schools.

The ReSporter did catch up with Coach Fields and he seemed to be in good spirits.

The ReSporter: Coach Fields how do you feel about your team so far this season?

Coach Fields: “We are a work in progress….we have more questions than we do answers and that could make for an interesting things on the field.”

The ReSporter: Tell us what you see with your offense and defense.

Coach Fields: “We don’t have a clue about our spread offense yet, but we do have a good and talented group of Seniors. We had 15 guys show up and they are all still out there.

But we have 1/3 of our team that has not taken a snap of high school football yet and that will make it interesting for sure.”

The ReSporter: Let us know what you have with some of your returning players.

CL Volleyball Will be Consistent This Season

Sunday, August 4th, 2013

New Volleyball Head Coach Kimberley Paisley will make sure you understand

Head Volleyball Coach Kimberley Paisley

one thing when you watch her team play.

That team will at least be ‘Consistent’.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary would state: (a) marked by harmony, regularity, or steady continuity : free from variation or contradiction. (b) marked by agreement : compatible…

Coach Paisley grew up in Wimberley and played on two Volleyball teams that made it to the Final Four with a State Championship resulting for one of those campaigns.

We are not finished as Paisley also played on two basketball teams that also made it to a Final Four and was beaten both times in the semi final game.

Coach Paisley played Volleyball for Kingsville in college and had a major in Biology.

She then proceeded to Alice and started her Coaching career for her first four years.

Alice was also just starting a Volleyball program and finished last to being just one spot from making the playoffs her final season.

Paisley then moved north to Smithville for three years where she inherited a team that was 0-10 in district play to playoffs for the first time in 20 years.

Each move has allowed Paisley to get closer to Wimberley where her Dad still lives.

“I was ready to get here,” Coach Paisley said excitedly. “I was excited.”

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Bracken Christian will be starting their Spring Practice next week as the Warriors will soon have something that might be different, with no Achilles on the field for the first time in five years.

But that is ok, since the brains of BCS football powerhouse really belongs to Head Coach Lloyd Fields as he will also enter his sixth year at the helm of Bracken Football.

The ReSporter woke Coach Fields from his slumber the other day to get his take on next week’s spring work outs.

The ReSporter: Hey Coach next week is the start of spring practice, what are your expectations this season?

Coach Fields: “We will start next Monday and this will be one of our shortest spring practices as we will only be on the field for five days. But I feel we can get a lot done and try to find out how we might be able to compete next season.”

The ReSporter: Let’s break down your team with the defense first.

Coach Fields: “For the last two years we have been running our defense on auto pilot, I had players that had a good grasp of what we were doing and all we had to do is tweak a thing or two.”

“This year we will be going back to basics and hopefully we can find some players we can count on.”
