Head Volleyball Coach Kim Paisley

Canyon Lake will be starting up their sports with the Volleyball team when the Hawks will be taking on the Alumni Hawks on August 3rd.

Volleyball has the best record for any sport at Canyon Lake and will look to continue that mantra this year with a team returning several starters and other players that had some 1st place finishes with those Sub-Varsity teams this past year.

The ReSporter caught up with Head Coach Kim Paisley as she shared what might be in store for this year’s team. (more…)

Musical Chairs for Soccer Coaches as Coach Tierney takes over Boy’s Team

Saturday, June 3rd, 2017

Head Boy’s Soccer Coach Ryan Tierney

Canyon Lake played musical chairs with their Soccer Coaches as Ryan Tierney the girls coach will now be moving to the Boy’s Soccer team after Head Coach Warren Graham will be stepping down.

Coach Graham had a great 4 year run for the team but his family took priority and providing for them caused the decision for leaving after school is finished.

The Hawks had improved immeasurably during the Coach Graham’s tenure as it has been mentioned in previous articles as the win totals had doubled during those four campaigns from a 2 win first year to finish in the Sweet 16 this past season. A 2-1 loss to Progresso will give you an idea of how close this team was to making the Elite 8 in the Start of Texas.

Head Volleyball Coach Kim Paisley

The ReSporter next Canyon Lake game article will come in a little more than 2 months as Volleyball will be going strong as August gets hot.

CL’s Volleyball team is still the only group to win a district championship and also sports the best team win percentage as this next season will have a lot of Freshman that will be classified as Sophomores as well as having several players that look to make a run for more accolades.
The ReSporter was able to catch up with Coach Paisley for a precursor for this coming school year.

The ReSporter: Give us your overall thoughts on this past season.

Ranger Cleaners says Go Hawks!!

Coach Chapman: “It was obviously the best season in program history, so we were pleased with what we did. We had some really memorable moments and games that will stay with the coaches and players for a long time. I told my wife the other day that I really miss the season and the games, bus rides and practices. She looked at me like I was crazy, but I do really miss being able to coach our players and seniors and get ready to compete against someone else. It was a lot of fun, and we accomplished a lot of good things.”

The ReSporter: Tell the Hawk Nation bout this Senior Class and what they have accomplished for round-ball.

Coach Chapman: “Up to this point this senior class has been our most accomplished. They led us to two playoff births, our first winning season and a lot of big wins. Like I told them last week, they were the pioneers to take our program to new heights, which is very difficult to do. It is always difficult to be the first ones to knock down a wall and plow through it. They have really opened up our program, and made a path for future teams and players to walk through. Our young guys now expect to be in the playoffs and compete for district championships, and that is because of our seniors. Aside from all of the basketball accolades, they are fine young men with very bright futures. There will undoubtedly go on to accomplish some big things in their lives, and I look forward to seeing those things.”

The ReSporter: What type of activity do the players do now during this time of year?

Coach Chapman planning strategy in Hawk Victory

Coach Chapman: “Right now we are back at it working for next year. We have told our returners that the 2017-18 season has already started. We are in the weight room and in the gym working to get bigger and stronger as well as more fundamentally sound. In May we will compete in our spring league and then probably play in summer league over the summer. We also have a solid group of players getting into the gym before school and working on their game, which is exciting to see. We are only a week into the off-season, but our players have really done a great job of working with energy and excitement.”

The ReSporter: The Track team just inherited a lot of points from this crew of basketball players. What does that say bout their athletic skills?

Coach Chapman: “We were a very athletic group this year, which carries over well to track. Obviously the McDonoughs will earn a ton of points each week in several events. Gerrit has always done well in the hurdles, and now Charlie has come out to compete in a few jumping events. Bennie is also competing in the distance events, which he is very committed to and good at. It’s exciting to see them doing so well in track in just their first meet.”

The ReSporter: You will have a lot of holes to fill next year….your JV team won district, what are your thoughts as this group of players start their quest for another round in the playoffs for next season?

The Club at Rebecca Creek says Hit them Straight & Go Hawks

Coach Chapman: “Just looking at who we have coming back and who other teams have coming back we feel we can and will be very successful next year. Like I alluded to earlier, our younger guys just expect to be in the playoffs because of what our seniors have done. They understand that we have to have a great off-season and need to improve, but they just have a confidence and belief in what we can accomplish. We are losing 8 seniors, so a lot of our younger guys look at that as an opportunity to fill a spot. I fully expect us to battle for a district championship this year, and hopefully make some noise in the playoffs.”

The ReSporter: Thanks Coach for your time this year and we look forward to next year’s Basketball Chapter.

Coaches Corner: Girls Soccer Ryan Tierney

Chloe Cullen is one of many Hawks ready for battle with Boerne this week.  (mjrphoto.com)

The ReSporter: Wow, what a week for your team. When did you have an idea of what this team might accomplish?

Coach Tierney: “I was excited after last season. I knew coming back this year we had great seniors and a strong junior class, so coming into the season I knew they were capable of accomplishing anything. The first game that stands out would be the one against Marble Falls. We tied them and that began to get us thinking that we could accomplish good things. This has been the toughest schedule we have had and we played a lot of really good teams close, but going forward we have been focusing on elevating ourselves by fighting to beat those quality teams.” (more…)

Coaches Corner with Girl’s Track, John Barthels

Sunday, February 12th, 2017

Half & Half on returners for the 4×400 Relay this year. Skylar Hurst & Sophia Thorpe are the returners.

The ReSporter: What has been the turnout so far for the Track & Field athletes?

Coach Barthels: “Currently, we have 46 girls that have attended practice in one facet or another as either a runner or thrower. So to answer your question, the turn out is good, but I will be happy when that number is 60.”

The ReSporter: How are you going to craft this team as this year has the potential to pass last year’s team?

Coach Barthels: “Great question, we have 4 girls that are returning that have had experience running on a varsity team.” (more…)

Tuesday, February 7th, 2017

Hawk Relay, 4×400, with Chance Martelli (alt), Heath McDonough, Tanner Faris, Austin Camacho, Brandon Courtney (not pictured Lester Boehm (all but 1 returning)

The ReSporter: What has been the turnout so far for the Track & Field athletes?

Coach Moses: “Just like every year the beginning to track season is kind of slow when you talk about numbers. With Basketball, Swimming, Soccer still going on, a lot of kids are finishing up those sports and then we get a better understanding of the turnout we will get. But with that said we have a good core of kids that we are working with right now.”

Coaches Hot Box with Softball’s John Gallagher

Sunday, January 29th, 2017

Softball’s Coach John Gallagher

The ReSporter: What can you tell us about the team as the time nears?

Coach Gallagher: “Since starting last week everyone has worked very hard and continues to get better and learn. We have some girls working to get noticed and their efforts have been admirable. Our returners are looking good and are getting into a groove both on offense and defense.

The ReSporter: Will you have enough for two teams this year?

Coach Gallagher: “Our numbers right now are good but not everyone is out because of basketball and swimming. We are hoping to get even more out this week.”

The ReSporter: The defense was your achilles heal last season, what can you tell us about that part of your team?

Coach Gallagher: “Defensively I see a stronger and deeper team. We have some options to work with at several positions which is always nice. The outfielders have some strong and accurate arms and I am very happy with their play so far. The infielders are very competitive and showing some very athletic skills.” (more…)
