Bracken Even Keels CASA, 67-21

Saturday, October 19th, 2013

Bracken has righted their ship as the Warriors opened with 36 straight points in a win over CASA, 67-21 at Warrior Stadium last Friday night.

“I thought we needed this ball game going into our game with OLH next week,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said. “We had to rethink our philosophy and our grind it out football but this game we were very business like.”

It was homecoming for Bracken Christian and some of those former players saw a familiar offense in this game.

BCS has been a grind it out type of team and on this night the Warriors had three straight drives consisting of one play for a score. For the game, Bracken had four one play drives and one two play drive.

That was a vintage Warrior night for this Homecoming crowd.

The Rams started the game throwing an interception on their third play when Sam Hilgendorf snagged the errant pass that gave BCS a chance to draw first blood.

CL Hawks Walk away with 27-6 Win over Bandera

Hawks take Bulldogs for a walk as this year’s version of CL football won their first game with what you could call a complete game victory in Bandera, 27-6.

“We beat them up physically and that was our plan,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “It is easy to give up when you are 0-6 overall and 0-1 in district, we have learned from what we have done this season…we knew that we would have to come out strong and we played a solid first quarter and we had some big plays.”

Complete Win for the Hawks.

First off, Canyon Lake’s new offense chewed up yardage on the ground with 367 yards at a 7 yard per carry clip.

Second off, Canyon Lake’s defense held Bandera to the lowest yardage total in Hawk history as these Bulldogs never got out of their back yard with just 109 yards of offense.

The Hawk ‘B’ squad started this contest with a whimper as their first four plays accounted for a negative three yards. The game might be a surprise for a club that has been clubbing opponents all year long.

Bandera then marched to the Mountain Valley 9 yard line where the Bulldogs finally ran out of gas.

The nine play drive covering 32 yards would be Bandera’s best drive of the night as these Bulldogs would only amass three more first downs in this game.

“The journey this year from that great comeback win in Blanco to not finishing games where we played 3 quarters here or there, but never a whole game,” Head Junior Varsity Coach Brian Owens stated. “We had to learn how to finish and we did not give up when this season got tough….we are playing with more enthusiasm.’

The Hawks held Bandera to no yards on their first drive which allowed the offense to set up shop and take a quick 8-0 lead. This drive was for 43 yards on 6 carries and a score that would be all CL would need for a win.

A key for this win was a line that dominated the trenches and running backs that shared the ball in running up the score and yardage.

Bracken Christian is having to regroup as they prepare in trying to start another streak of wins this season.

Last week’s game was not a good barometer for how to get into a playoff type of atmosphere and certainly some changes will need to be made on how this team will go into the last half of their schedule.

Casa Rams have three wins which is a high water mark for this team over the last few seasons.

This Ram team has a couple of players that will give you notice that the game might not be a runaway victory just because you suit up.

Coaches Corner with Coach Fields

Thursday, October 17th, 2013

The ReSporter: Hey Coach Fields, what are your thoughts as you go into your game with

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

CASA this week?

Coach Fields: “We have a costly injury with Coy Zunker going down…we will need to see how Daniel Forgione will do at his position on defense and a work by committee.”

The ReSporter: What else will you do defensively now?

Coach Fields: “We will start Forgione, but he also plays offense and so we will bring Noah Boriack from offense to defense too.”

The ReSporter: Will there be a domino effect?

Coach Fields: “Yes, (Preston) Koch will and other players will be playing more on both sides of the line. The weather is cooler and we won’t have to worry about players getting as tired on the field. Boriack and Koch are two of our best defensive players but we have not had them play much on the defensive side because we were saving them for offense. Mason Anthony will be another player that will fill more roles.”

“Preston (Koch) is our only player that started on that State Championship game and now he is a senior playing his last four regular season games.”

The ReSporter: What do you expect this week?

Coach Fields: “In a perfect world both players (Koch and Boriack) are starters on defense and that should help us as this season goes on.

The ReSporter: Tell us about Casa offense.

Coach Fields: “Casa has a new head coach and they are a lot better coached…this team is quicker and they have a player that is very quick and this player will make you miss him in the open field.

They also have a fullback that is their go to receiver and so we will have to stop both of these guys to be in good shape, if we don’t then it could be a long night.”

The ReSporter: What about defensively.

Coach Fields: “They basically have five guys that will go both ways and those same two players on offense will be the same players we will need to watch on defense.”

The ReSporter: How do you progress after the loss last week?

Coach Fields: “We got beat after our first game this year and then rebounded with a four game winning streak and now we will need to go four in a row again. This is Homecoming game and this is probably the best Casa team we have faced since the 2008 year…Casa is big up front.”

The ReSporter: Final thoughts for this week?

Coach Fields: “The weather has not been cooperative this week and we have had some good practices this week.

We have everybody playing well and have that one injury to deal with and now just four more weeks to go and the weather finally has us into football season. We will have another tough game with OLH upcoming and we just have to take care of business to end this year.”

The ReSporter: Thanks Coach and we will come visit you at your Casa after the Casa game.

BCS Answers with 42 Unanswered Points in Win over New Braunfels Christian

Saturday, October 12th, 2013

Bracken Christian scored 42 unanswered points in win over New Braunfels Chrisitan.

The Warriors almost doubled Wildcat’s yardage as BCS’s run game just wore down their opponent as this game got into the third quarter.

NB had a 79 yard drive with a touchdown run of 74 yards on their first drive and that would be the ……. last score.

That NB offense only had 139 total yards for the rest of this game or 3 yards per play which is not a first down in four plays in 6-man football.

It is hard to get any momentum when a defense is clamping down on the run or pass with an average of yards that low.

The Warriors stopped this Wildcat offense four times inside their own 20 yard line, in a bend but don’t break mode throughout this ball game.

Drives Plays Yards Yard Line stopped What Happened
 1st 3 79 Goal Line Touchdown

 3rd 7 36 Bracken's 15yd line Interception
 4th 2 2 Wildcats 39yd line Interception
 5th 4 8 Bracken's 38yd line Half

 8th 8 26 Bracken's 7yd line Downs
 9th 4 -20 Wildcats 11yd line Downs
 10th 9 30 Bracken's 12yd line Downs

Bracken Christian’s running game had Preston Koch and Noah Boriack both breaking the century mark as the Warriors averaged right over 9 yards per carry.

Eleven plays of over 10 yards helped in allowing Bracken’s defense to be fresh when they were called upon to stop these Wildcats.

This game was a put together contest that came about after Giddings State School cancelled their game two weeks ago.

Bracken played well on both sides of the ball as Coy Zunker came away with two interceptions and Sam Hilgenforf also with an interception on this night.

Boriack continued to have some tough runs as Bracken only had two runners with 100 yard rushing for the fifth time in their history.

Players Yards Game Result
Noah Boriack 150 New Braunfels Won

 Grady Achilles 389 OLH 60-42

This was a game that had every facet of the game humming as the season will begin in earnest during the second half of this campaign.
