Coaches Corner: Bracken’s Lloyd Fields

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

The ReSporter:Hello Coach Fields, I would like to know if OLH Hawks are a

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

better team than the one that played earlier this season.
Based on their game with Seguin Lifegate when they lost 50-0…that game seems to standout based on their body of work.

Coach Fields: “They have a whole new coaching staff and that will always throw a team behind. They started the season in a transitional position and so based on having a full season by now, I can say they are a better team than the one that took the field against Lifegate.”

The ReSporter: You have a short week after playing a late game on Saturday. What is the make up of your team this week as they prepare for OLH?

Coach Fields: “This is kind of a rivalry game for us. The loser of this game will either finish third or fourth (OLH) in district. It is also the last home game for the Seniors and end of an era for most of the kids.”

 BCS 51 Emery-Weiner 19 OLH 64 SA Lutheran 14

There has been some classic games against Kerrville OLH from past years.

One such game played in 2009 was the last time Bracken had lost at home.

OLH had more in their tank in that contest as they poured it on in the second half and pulled away from a Bracken team that was on an 8 game winning streak and had a lot of momentum going into the post season.

Then in 2010, BCS returned the favor and narrowly escaped with a nine point win in Kerrville which allowed the Warriors to play a home playoff game while OLH would be relegated to a tougher road in the playoffs.

In fact, Bracken met up with OLH again that year in the third round of those playoffs.

It was a classic game that went into overtime with Bracken intercepting a pass that put your Warriors into their championship game and eventual TAPPS Trophy against Dallas Covenant.

Last year, Kerrville OLH and Bracken was battling for a District crown and the Warriors ‘Mercy’ gamed the visitors on this go around, 79-34. It was a 24th game winning streak for Bracken that got them eventually into another final four round.

Pre/Game: Navarro (3-1) @ CLHawks (2-2)

Monday, November 5th, 2012
History: Canyon Lake and Navarro are tied at one game a piece in their short history.
 2010 Hawks 26 Panthers 38
 2011 Hawks 41 Panthers 26
This Year:
 Hawks 26 Blanco 21 Navarro 21 SA Antonian 35
 Hawks 35 Somerset 54 Navarro 36 SA Christian 34
Hawks 13 La Vernia 14 Navarro 68 SA Holy Cross 07
 Hawks 31 Burnet 37 Navarro 48 Marion 14
Hawks 09 La Grange 34 Navarro 30 SA Sam Houston 13
 Hawks 27 Fredericksburg 17 Navarro 28 Boerne 14
 Hawks 42 Bandera 07 Navarro 20 Wimberley 21
 Hawks 03 Wimberley 40 Navarro 54 Fredericksburg 23
 Hawks 16 Boerne 43 Navarro 48 Bandera 13

Canyon Lake has just one option this week. Win, and if possible more than 14 points.

Navarro will be bringing their run game to Hawk stadium and if you can think back two years ago, then you might remember over 500 yards gained on the ground by that Panther team.

Navarro only has one loss in District 27-3A competition and that loss was by one point to Wimberley.

Boerne was beaten by 14 points to Navarro leaving just one other choice for Canyon Lake.

If Boerne could beat Wimberley, then Canyon Lake could win by one point over Navarro to squeeze into the third spot in district play. That win would give CL the bid based on head to head action.

Bracken Wins Feverishly over Emery-Weiner, 51-19

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012

Eli Achilles changes uniform colors during game in win over Emery-Weiner, 51-19

After a two hour rain delay, Bracken Christian ran a fever over the Jags from Houston Emery-Weiner last Saturday, 51-19.

With some players coming out after some sickness, time was not offered as a remedy as the Warriors went to work on a rainy afternoon.

Eli Achilles had 26 yards after his first four carries which for most contests would of been a recipe for over 50 yards and two touchdowns. All Achilles had to show for those four carries was sweat and knowing this would be a different opponent.

Emery-Weiner is an independent private school that has enough players to be classified as an 11-man team, but since they play 6-man instead then are relegated to playing without a District to compete in.

Hence, Bracken’s worst fears wear realized when this game went four quarters and a difference of playing styles.

E-W would have a defensive and offensive team. Coaches would be able to teach and instruct what needed to be done before that particular unit would re-enter the game.

Conversely, BCS would look at several of their offensive or defensive players and tell them to stay out on the field simply because they do not have that luxury for substitutions.

After stalling on their first drive, Bracken’s defense, also allowed just one first down before the Jaguars ran out of downs on the Warriors 35 yard line.

The second time was a charm as four more running plays for 23 yards and one pass to Preston Koch for 22 yards payed off for a Bracken lead, 6-0.

With the first quarter coming to a close, BCS had just 49 yards rushing and those 22 yards of passing offense.

Coaches Corner: With Lloyd Fields

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

The ReSporter: What are you thinking about with your opponent

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

this Saturday?

Coach Fields: “They (Houston Emery-Weiner) are one of the best 4 and 4 teams I’ve seen, they could have a better record.”

The ReSporter: What will be your plan of attack for this contest?

Coach Fields: “We are going to look at different kids in carrying the ball…probably run our tight offense that is looking pretty good, it is very functional.”

The ReSporter: What are you looking for in that type of offense?

Canyon Lake Comes up Short in Loss to Boerne, 43-16

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

Canyon Lake started on fire as Eduardo Covarrubias and an Offensive Line controlled the early part of this game.

“We came out the first half and did what we wanted to do,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “They just outplayed us in the second half.”

“They are a great football team,” Coach Drum continued. “I told our players that they would have to beat a playoff caliber of team to make the playoffs.”

Seven out of those first eight plays were runs for Covarrubias, as he moved the Hawks from their 30 yard line to the Greyhound’s five.

On Covarrubias last run, an innocuous five yard procedure penalty changed this drive from a second and goal from the five to a first and goal from the 14 yard line.

Three straight incompletions and a promising drive ended with a 32 yard field goal off the foot of Jake Robinson for Canyon Lake.

Canyon Lake’s defense then held Boerne for a field goal try that was wide of the bars and preserving the lead.

The Hawks offense then dominated again by driving for six plays, going 79 yards and a 9-0 lead after the PAT failed.

This drive had Covarrubias with 57 yards rushing on four carries and a 23 yard pass to Matt Andress giving the Hawks a first down on Boerne’s two yard line.

Next play, Sophomore Hayden Dubois scored ending an impressive drive right up the gut on the Greyhounds adding six more points, 9-0 in favor to the Hawks.

Then the unraveling would begin to take it’s toll.

CL Hawks JV Team gets Tricked and not Treated in Loss to Boerne

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

In a wild finish, only fit for Halloween night, the Canyon Lake JV Hawks lost a heartbreaker to Boerne 18-12 as the Greyhounds connected on a game-winning. 8-yard touchdown pass with just one second left to play.

With just under two minutes in the game, Canyon Lake stopped Boerne on a 4th and goal play and took over poised for a long, game-winning drive of their own.

Quarterback Skylar Tschoepe led the Hawks down the field with a variety of passes and scrambles.

However, the drive stalled on the Boerne 45 after Tschoepe was picked off on a long, 4th down pass attempt.

Boerne took over with 25 seconds left and immediately connected on a 30 yard pass play that moved the ball to the Canyon Lake 25. Two plays later they connected on another pass play over the middle for a winning score and one second on the clock.

MV Hawks 8th ‘B’ Squad out run Greyhounds, 24-16

Mountain Valley 8th Grade Team listens in after 24-16 Victory over Boerne

Mountain Valley 8th grade ‘B’ squad improved their record to 3-0-1 for District as they held off a fast closing Greyhound team at Hawk Stadium on Wednesday night, 24-16.

The game had a lot of fireworks to start this contest.

Boerne started with a fumble on their first play, then Mountain Valley responded with a one play 43 yard run from Jaden Balmos as he went through the Greyhounds like a Knight in a Chess game.

Balmos ended this game with 101 yards, with seven of his 11 carries going for eight yards or further. Pretty impressive for Balmos and a Hawk Offensive Line.

Andrew Neel had am impressive game as he threw a two point conversion to Brandon Courtney, staking a quick, 8-0 lead.

Charlie McIntosh had his second interception in as many games on the Greyhounds next set of downs.

Mountain Valley responded again with a 39 yard drive in seven plays with a Neel to Mason Blackburn 26 yard pass on a fourth down play when the Hawks were needing eight yards for a first down.
