Canyon Lake JV Football Grounds La Vernia, Wins 13-6
Monday, September 17th, 2012Story by Coach Lucas Chapman
The Junior Varsity Hawks survived a late charge by the La Vernia Bears Thursday night in La Vernia to win 13-6. The victory moved the Hawks to 3-0 on the season.
After a 0-0 game at the half, Sophomore Skyler Tschoepe put the Hawks on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run on a quarterback sneak with Jared Bruckman adding the PAT. In the fourth quarter, Tschoepe was at it again, connecting on a 5 yard touchdown strike to Wide Receiver Shane Relkin. The score put the Hawks up 13-0 late in the game.
Down two scorea, La Vernia went to the air and scored on a 20 yard pass with just over 30 seconds to play, Tommy Clark stripped the ball after a short completion, and Cody Powell recovered the fumble to seal the victory.
The Canyon Lake defense was stifling all night long, forcing the Bears to go to the air after stuffing the run for most of the game. When the Bears dropped back to pass, the secondary stepped up with several pass break ups and sure tackling in the open field.
The Hawks return home this week to play the Burnet Bulldogs.

CL Hawks lose by a Claw, 14-13 to La Vernia Bears
Friday, September 14th, 2012Canyon Lake lost by a claw, 14-13 to La Vernia Bears last Friday night at Hawk stadium. A blocked extra point was the difference in this game as the special teams did play a better game, however the blocked extra point would end up haunting this Hawk team for another week.
The Hawks defense bottled up the Bears with only 251 total yards but could not capitalize when they needed too in order to ice La Vernia.
This defense had another solid effort overall and now have a three game stint of holding opponents under 300 yards of total offense.
The three game average is 255 yards and only 143 yards via the ground. Canyon Lake gave up 251 yards to the Bears and that included a 93 yard drive at the end of regulation.
“We played a heck of a game and our defense did a lot better,” Senior Trevor Duty deduced. “We did our hardest and I put all I could in that last drive. We were prepared…we just let off the pedal too much.”
That stat will tell you this team might be able to make some noise as CL tries to get their offense in sync and balance out each aspect of what a winning program can put together.
CL Freshman Run Down by Bears, 26-0
Friday, September 14th, 2012Canyon Lake was run down by La Vernia Bears as the Freshman team took it on the chin to the tune of 26-0, last night at a soggy Hawk field.
La Vernia’s running game was stepping it off against Canyon Lake as the first half yards were all the result of rushing plays.
The refs were also stepping it off against Canyon Lake, as they amassed 10 penalties for 55 yards. This was not referees blowing calls, it was a freshman team that was not concentrating on snap counts.
Stat line for the game was the total yardage for the first half: Canyon Lake 49 total yards CL Flags 55 total yards
Canyon Lake was still in the game as they were driving for a touchdown as the first half was coming to an end, as on the last play a pass to the end zone was intercepted and returned 95 yards for a Bears touchdown.
Football: CL Coaches Drum Beat
Thursday, September 13th, 2012The ReSporter had a good time talking to Head Coach Charley Drum this week, we hope

Coach Charley Drum
The ReSporter: Two weeks in a row, the special teams have had some trying times, what have you done to try to rectify this part of their game?
Coach Drum: “We are getting the kids situated and they were Junior Varsity players last year and so we are trying to get them where they need to be. We are going to change up some players in the games. This is easier said than done sometimes.”
The ReSporter: Quarterback Branson Belcher had the most yards rushing by a quarterback in the history of Canyon Lake last week.
Coach Drum: “That was one positive from last week. We are trying to get Branson to buy into this to be in his game. Two weeks ago in the Blanco game, he could of made plays with his feet and it cost us in some of the plays. He has never been asked to make plays with his feet.”

Head Coach Lloyd Fields
The ReSporter: Coach, what was your goal this week after just two weeks of play with this team?
Coach Fields: “When I saw that we would have an open date this early in the season this Summer, I had no idea of how much this would be a good thing. If we would of had to played, then we would of had a hard time playing this week. This bye week could not of come at a better time.”
The ReSporter: What are you trying to accomplish with the players this week?
Coach Fields: “We are trying to get in better condition and we are going to polish up some things and try to get better. We put our game plan for Brenham in yesterday.”
