Coaches Corner: Bracken’s Lloyd Fields

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Head Coach Lloyd Fields will be starting another year with the last

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

scrimmage before the season starts next week.

Bracken Christian will be traveling to Seguin for a three team scrimmage with Lifegate and San Marcos Home School.

“This scrimmage we will have the starters with more time ready with the first team,” Coach Fields said. “We only have two non-starters on the sidelines that are healthy.”

BCS has already had some players hurt during this part of the season and that will put some pressure on more players while having Coaches spending more time in prayer time hoping that this scrimmage will be considered a success if no one gets hurt.

“This past week we have spent a lot of time on the kicking game,” Coach Fields fielded kicks. “But, we will need to get some work in this Saturday.”

Running Back Eduardo Covarubbias will Tongue Tie Announcers this Year

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012

Running Back Eduardo Covarrubias with Zach Henshaw

Eduardo Covarubbias has been a mouthful through the last two years as Canyon Lake goes on the road and that team’s announcer has the chance to practice a lot of syllables.

The saving grace has been that Covarubbias has not had the amount of carries his counterpart had (Zach Henshaw) during his 4,329 rushing yards the past three years.

Now, Covarubbias will have the chance to show off his skills during his Senior year and quite frankly, there might not be that much difference from what we had seen when Henshaw was running over defenses for the Hawks.

Covarubbias was the feature back the first part of the 2010 season when Henshaw was nursing an injury suffered during the Summer. Covarrubias did quite well during that time slot when he rushed for 417 yards on 71 carries for a 5.9 per carry average during that four game stint.

For his career Covarubbias has totaled, 943 yards on 159 carries for a 5.9 per carry average.

Canyon Lake: It’s Time to get Defensive

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

During district play last season, Canyon Lake finished second in points scored only behind State Champion Wimberley.

That translated into a season with eight wins and no chance for more since the team missed on the tie breaker rule with Boerne and Navarro.

However; District 26 standings would of been predicted right on the button if you would of known how many points each team would give up.

Wimberley allowed only 51 points total in their five games, a whopping 100 points less than the Hawks.

Canyon Lake had a break out year offensively, but were left at the altar defensively when they gave up 30.2 points per game in that five game stretch.

Head Coach Charley Drum

Head Coach Charley Drum is no stranger to the Hawk’s sideline and now the curtain has been raised on his team from this time forward.

Canyon Lake started their season with a scrimmage in Georgetown against East View a new school about two years younger than the Hawks.

Running Back Eduardo Covarrubias scored from 65 yards out on the first play from scrimmage on a lead to the right side. He broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage, and then out ran everyone else to the goal line.

Bracken Christian hoping practice makes perfect

The Warriors started in familiar territory, when on his first carry at the tailback position, Davis Scott darted 60 yards in a scrimmage against Lometa last Friday at Bracken Field.

Lometa plays for UIL division and was also joined with Round Rock Christian for the scrimmage.

“Lometa finished in the quarterfinals last season,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields started. “They are predicted to finish second or third this season in their district.”

Bracken Christian scored a 3-1 victory as Eli Achilles teamed up with Arnold Adame for two passes that went for 50 and 45 yards.

“No pass hit the ground from the first team,” Coach Lloyd Fields said.

Canyon Lake Hawks Preparing for Season

What is the definition for winning?

The Hawks have been on a tear since the middle of the ’10 season as they have compiled a record that can be a great building block.

Canyon Lake will be entering their fifth season and now only lack one win to even their overall record to an even .500 with 22 wins and losses.

Considering the first season where Canyon Lake could only muster one win over a hapless Ingram team where scoring 21 points was a high water mark for the young Hawks.

Three years later, CL has put their brand on many other mascots with some high scoring and with losses to only three teams during this recent stretch. Wimberley, Boerne, and Somerset are the only losses and now the Hawks ready themselves for another exciting year.

Canyon Lake: Senior Doug Hubnik can make a difference

Sunday, August 12th, 2012

It was the fifth game of the season when Doug Hubnik made history with a four year

Senior Doug Hubnik ready for Season to start

program with lots of new ground to explore.

Hubnik scored on a 60 yard interception return and 80 yard kickoff return in the Luling game which was a first time for those type of scores for Canyon Lake.

Hubnik had the most catches from a non-senior last season with six. Those catches went for 95 yards and now the log jam in the receiver corp might allow this senior a chance to make a difference.

“We have a lot of skill players,” Hubnik started. “We will need to play to our skill levels this season.”

When asked how the play of Quarterback Branson Belcher was this first week, “He is playing real good…Branson is throwing real good.”

“We have grown up since our junior varsity year and a lot of us have moved to different positions and that has been our biggest change,” Hubnik said while commenting on how this Senior class might perform this season.

BCS: Versatile Davis Scott ready for the Season

Sunday, August 12th, 2012

Many times what you hope will happen can get changed and coaches need to reach into

Junior Davis Scott ready for new role

their bag of tricks to see if something new might work.

Bracken Christian had that scenario come about when practice started last week. Six-man football is the game of choice for the Warriors simply because the number of boys available to play the sport.

Hence, it does not take many changes in a summer to start the dominoes falling and causing angst among the coaches and team.

The best way to stop the domino effect is by having players that can step into different roles at the drop of a helmet.

Junior Davis Scott will be that player this year as he will change from his Center position to running back. Scott had six carries last season from the Center position and he gained 36 yards.

Scott made his mark on the defensive side gaining All State honors last season as a defensive end.

“I’m a little shocked,” Scott said shockingly. “I am also very excited and I will do whatever the team needs me to do.”

QB Branson Belcher: One Year Later

Saturday, August 11th, 2012

Canyon Lake intrasquad Scrimmage

Quarterback Branson Belcher has won more games than any other quarterback in the history of Canyon Lake Football.

His eight wins last year put him ahead of Ross Wagliardo and Jeff Nabors who won seven and six games respectively in the previous three years.

Now the Hawks prepare for a break out year that hopefully will include that hidden word called, ‘Playoffs’.

The 8-2 season last year was great, but not having a game after the tenth game, left an emptiness for the team and fans.

Senior Quarterback Belcher will now take ownership of a team that has the possibility of eclipsing the eight wins from last year.
