Jacob Ruff, Austin Rodriguez, and Tristan Chacon ready to go to FBU

The ReSporter had a press release earlier this week for three former Mountain Valley football players that will be in their debut season playing for Canyon Lake High School.

In that back drop The ReSporter wanted to have a chance for a more in depth interview with these three players.

Hope you enjoy reading more about these three future Hawks.

The ReSporter: How many students were at the camp you had that gave you a chance to compete in Ohio?

Jacob Ruff: “There was about 300 at each of their camps.”

The ReSporter: How many camps does DBU have during that time around the country?

Jacob Ruff: “Look on the back of my shirt….(Ruff said this as he was sporting a t-shirt with all the cities the camps were held).”

One Last Hurdle to Clear for the Hawks

Thursday, July 9th, 2015
Great Game

Great Game

It is time to clear that last hurdle for this year’s edition of CL Hawks football.

We have talked about how Canyon Lake will need to have a faster start to their season.

Last year, the Hawks started 2-1, but that first game was not a good start for a team that seems to play better when the season has past the ,getting out of the gate, stage.

Wimberley was a hurdle just in their name and how this team seems to get the best of Canyon Lake just by getting off the bus.

Turnovers was the key in this game last year, CL lost 3 fumbles while coughing up the ball a total of 6 times against the Texans.

Speaking of turnovers, as a team, the Hawks had their best season ever in that department with a plus 13 in take-a-ways.

In the two games with the Texans and Lampasas, the Hawks had 12 fumbles and lost 6 with only 3 lost fumbles for the rest of the 10 games played.

Hurdle #4 for Canyon Lake’s Football Team

Sunday, July 5th, 2015
Micah St. John looks to help Canyon Lake clear some hurdles.

Micah St. John looks to help Canyon Lake clear some hurdles.

Hurdle One:  Get off to a fast start.
Hurdle Two: Take care of Wimberley.
Hurdle Three: Make a statement in District with win over Liberty Hill.
Hurdle Four: Continue with a Plus in turnover margin like last season.

The ReSporter has given three hurdles to this season that, if cleared, would help this year’s edition of Canyon Lakes chances for a decent season.

This next Hurdle will have a part of the game that was an actual strength last year.

The Hawks need to have another season with a + turnover margin.

So many close games last year and it could have been much worse if the Hawks had not been taking the lead in separating their opponents from the ball by fumble or interceptions.

One play, last year was the game in Fredericksburg as the Billies were going to the end zone but a fumble at the one yard line helped give Canyon Lake a chance to have a 14 point swing in this game and ultimately a convincing win.

Don’t forget that hurdles are a barrier that needs to be cleared by a track runner in order to finish a race.

hur dle noun

1. an upright frame, typically one of a series, that athletes in a race must jump over.

2. an obstacle or difficulty
Synonyms: obstacle, difficulty, problem, barrier, bar, snag, stumbling block, impediment, obstruction, complication, hindrance, hitch

The ReSporter is giving a list of hurdles that, if cleared, would give Canyon Lake a good season that might have a team with a chance of advancing past the second round of playoffs.

This next hurdle will be much like the last article as it revolves around one team.

2nd Football Hurdle for the 2015 Season

Wednesday, July 1st, 2015
Hawk's Defense will be a key ingredient for having a successful season.

Hawk’s Defense will be a key ingredient for having a successful season.

Next Hurdle for this year’s Hawk Football Team is that huge elephant in the room.

if you can’t see it, then The ReSporter will give you a hint.

If you are lucky then you are a Texan in the State of Texas.

Yes, that school to the North of us called Wimberley.

This team has had our number for several years now, as CL has been able to scrounge just one win these past 7 years.

In last year’s game, Canyon Lake had the lead till the very end, until a desperation pass was received for a Texan win.

That game was a heartbreaker for the Hawks as they went into the game with a 2 game winning streak and what seemed to be some needed momentum based on how those past two years had the Hawks trying to get enough wins to hit the break even point.

Then there was the game that had two undefeated teams four years ago and Wimberley taking the Hawks to the wood shed for a not to pleasant encounter with a paddle.

The good news for this particular hurdle is some recent success with Wimberley in the lower grade levels as well as the Hawks first win two years ago over the Texans.

Hurdles to Clear for the 2015 Football Season

Saturday, June 27th, 2015
Canyon Lake's Junior Varsity improved last year as they look to take the next step

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity improved last year as they look to take the next step

Hurdles for this coming season will need to be cleared in order for Canyon Lake to ascend into a conversation piece for more than just the community.

The ReSporter will delve into 5 hurdles for this season as we continue our countdown before August and the official start to another year of football.

Canyon Lake has not had a consistent game when that first kick-off to start the season is booted.

Even during the Hawks best season, 8-2 in 2011, CL had to overcome a seven point halftime deficit to escape with a hard fought 14-07 game.

There are more hurdles based on that one year of games, but a slow start playing Blanco has been no different than every other game in this series for Canyon Lake.

The Hawks have played Blanco each campaign but have yet to have a convincing win much like the Panthers put to CL last year.

This would also be the second year in a row that your CL Hawks would prove their worth by winning in the first round.

Two years ago, Canyon Lake had a dismal regular season as losses would continue to pile up on a team that had changed their offense and was in the throes of trying to figure out how to get that elusive win.

The Hawks had their longest losing streak ever during this 2012-2013 campaign as that number reached 9 games after a humiliating loss in their 6th game to Fredericksburg, 38-14, at home.
