Coaches Corner with Mary Beth Gallagher

Coach Mary Beth Gallagher

The ReSporter: Give us an idea of how you ended up with two week’s off this year?

Coach Gallagher: “Last year at this time we had already played two district games and thinking that would be the case this season left us scrambling for games. We did not realize until it was too late to schedule games. We called a lot of schools and did get our last two with Pleasanton and Devine.”

The ReSporter: What might be some benefits for this long of a layoff?

Coach Gallagher: “This break will actually help us as these girls will have time to study and do better in their classes. The break will also give us some scrimmages and conditioning. The girls worked hard especially in our scrimmages already this week.”

The ReSporter: Tell us about this Tournament in Lampasas?

Coach Gallagher: “We will have a four team pod system and will be guaranteed at least three games in two days and maybe four.”

The ReSporter: Who are the teams and what do you mean ‘Maybe’ four games?

Hawk’s Basketball Get Ready for District Play

Wednesday, December 26th, 2012

Canyon Lake’s quest for another playoff team will continue through this Winter and Spring.

Right now you have two promising scenarios with the Hawk Basketball programs.

The Girls and Boys teams have a legitimate chance to snag a T-Shirt company this coming season with help to design such a shirt.

Soccer has been tough to garner a playoff spot since this sport has been dominated by much larger schools since these teams play in a different district than CL’s other sports.

Because of a reduced number of teams that play that sport, the UIL combines 3A schools with 4A schools to crown a champion in Soccer each year.

The same is true for Canyon Lake’s Swimming team in having a district with larger schools. Another fact is that the Hawk Swimming program is still in it’s infancy stage and that makes competing in this tougher venue doubly hard.

Swimming also is much like Track and Field where playoffs are based on individuals in each event advancing instead of a Team getting in a bus for their next round of events after a District crowns a champion.

Canyon Lake has a few teams that have not had a chance to compete after a district race yet.

CL’s Basketball Weekly Recap for Boy’s and Girl’s

Monday, December 17th, 2012

CL Hawks Boys and Girls Basketball Week’s Recap

The Canyon Lake Ladies have had another successful week in hoopsville.

Since our last recap, CL Girls have won a tournament and both single games last week over Devine and Pleasanton.

This team is now on a seven game winning streak which is a high water mark for this school.

In our last wrap up ‘Percentages’ was talked about and here is what the Hawks had two weeks ago compared to today:

Team Total Shots 3Point Free Throws
 Percentages Two Weeks Ago 36.7% 32.9% 39.2%
 Percentages Now 33.4% 31.4% 42.8%

All those percentages have gone down except for Canyon Lake’s free throws.

Shooting is important, but this team relies on three other items that have resulted in their bottom line: Winning.

Defense has been top notch throughout in all their games thus far. That one result can cover a multitude of shortcomings in a game. This Hawk team is a testament to that truism.

Another positive is how much the Hawks are cutting down on those pesky turnovers. Every time a turnover is avoided will give Canyon Lake another chance to score.

One more positive this team possesses is their knack for offensive rebounding. That one stat will allow that shooting percentage to actually be higher than it shows.

Canyon Lake averages right at 14 offensive rebounds per game which might be their most important number in that stat box.

Confidence is sprouting with each win and the emergence of Sophomore Kyndall Drum will pay dividends when district starts.

BCS Lady Warriors Fall to NB Christian, 69-35

Friday, December 14th, 2012

Bracken Christian Lady Warriors beat New Braunfels Christian, 14-7 in the second quarter, but lost the game last Friday night at the Warriors gym.

The Warriors (4-5) were basically out played by one Wildcat that went wild scoring over 50 points in this contest.

BCS did close the gap in the second quarter to seven points, 17-23 as this scrappy group of Lady Warriors outscored New Braunfels with 12 unanswered points helping to close the gap.

The Wildcats then got wild for the remainder of this game outscoring BCS, 39-14 in the second half.

Lorena Martinez finished in double figures with 11 points and Micaela Michael controlled the boards finishing with 11 and one block.

A repeat of that second quarter for the game and BCS will put a scare or win against any team.

CL will have a chance again to get a seven game winning streak which has not been accomplished yet at Hawkville.

This six game streak has been reached two other times with this year’s team and the standard for all future teams at CL with the 2009-10 squad.

That Hawk team reached the playoffs and that goal has not been reached since.

Another milestone was reached in last night’s game.

Senior Katie Williams will now be raising the scoring bar for the remainder of this season as her 14 points put her on top of the heap in CL scoring, passing Tiffany Tschoepe.
