Hawks and Texans were All-Tied up after Doubleheader Soccer Games

Saturday, March 23rd, 2013

Lady Hawks Soccer Team are now going where no CL Team Sport has gone in these past two years,

Two Football years
Two Basketball years
Two Volleyball years
….you get the idea, it has been a while for the Hawks and now hopefully there might be more sports to follow.

Yes, Canyon Lake has finished higher in Track and Field these past couple of years, but Track doesn’t go as a team after district has finished.

The Hawks needed a win for finishing in third place outright, but another tie would have a different way of determining how these two teams would be put in their respected playoff brackets.

So, Head Coach Katie McWhorter would need to win a coin flip to decide which team might face the 6th ranked team in State for their first round opponent.

Both teams could only muster a goal a piece for this dramatic finish. No, not a penalty kick, just a coin flip.

“I was able to call the flip,” Coach McWhorter said. “Before I called the coin toss, I asked my team captains what they wanted me to call. Lauren Justis had to sit out this game due to a concussion, and she and Jasmine Smith have been great leaders for the team this year, so I really felt it was their call to make. Jasmine asked me to call heads, and we ended up winning the tie breaker with that.”

Tuesday Sports Recap for The Hawks

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

McKenna Beseda making the play

Hawks lost every game played on Tuesday night and so The ReSporter will just do an overall recap for all those games below.

Stats will be for the games that Coaches sent to us.

In Soccer, Canyon Lake Boys continue a season with very few smiley faces to show for their work. As has been mentioned, Soccer has a task of facing larger schools and winning is always a challenge.

That hopes to change in the near future with a new alignment possibility but for now CL is still hoping for a win against Wimberley this Friday as they will close out their season.

Canyon Lake played Dripping Springs tough in their first go around, losing 1-0, but Tuesday night they were outscored 4-0 in the loss.

Girls Soccer has had more success than the boys and will soon have a chance to participate in the postseason after this Friday’s game with Wimberley.

Dripping Springs has a dominant team and once again beat CL, 6-0 which might have been suspected after losing their first game, 8-0. The Springs has clinched first place in District 53-4A play.

Friday is a big day for CL, as a win over Wimberley, will put the Hawks in a game with a second seeded team from District 54-4A.

Lady Hawks Soccer Team Order T-Shirts

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Lady Hawks Soccer clinched a spot for the post season with a 6-0 wipeout over Seguin on Friday night.

Christina Fowler was a scoring machine with five of the Canyon Lakes points. Lauren Justis had the other score on this record night.

Now CL has a chance of finishing third with a victory over Wimberley to end their regular season later this month.

It has been almost two years since a CL team has had a chance to order Playoff T-Shirts and now the toughest job might be trying to find the number for that T-Shirt company.

Assists for Canyon Lake were Kaitlin Wier, Michelle Panek, Morgan Boles-Crumrine.

Goalkeeper Wynne Clark had four saves in the shut-out and now the Hawks will work on their game as they prepare for another season—Post Season.

Congrats….now finish the season strong Hawks!!

Canyon Lake will be baseball central this week as your Hawks will entertain four teams from around the state for the Comal ISD Tournament. There will other games played at the Hawk field so if you want to take in other games, then contact Comal Athletic Department.

Head Golf Coach Greg Norris

The Hawks had a decent week of games with a couple of run ruled games in the Lockhart Tournament and also a good competitive game with Marble Falls on opening night.

This is not the same team that has graced Hawk Field in recent years as both Varsity and JV are having some great results with depth out the wazoo.

The Varsity finished their tournament 3-0 by winning Saturday over Austin Lanier.

CLJV baseball team had a win over Wimberley on Friday night and have several players that deserve some attention.

Girls Soccer also had a significant win this past week taking on and beating Seguin, 4-0. Soccer does not have as many teams as other sports so CL plays in a 4A division with other brought up 3A squads.

Lady Hawks Soccer: Start and FINISH Strong in Win over Seguin

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks won a pivotal game Tuesday night against Seguin, 4-0 in what could be a landmark contest as this season continues.

To recap this district season, all you need to know is that Canyon Lake needs to beat one team to get them into a playoff spot.

Right now Seguin might be that odd team out which could usher your Hawks into a good situation and another ‘can win’ game with Wimberley might even secure that spot.

“We came out strong,” Head Coach Katie McWhorter started. “We scored our first goal within the first minute of the game.”

Whatever butterflies that might been around was soon a thing of the past as CL took that opportunity to play on the offensive side of the field for much of this night.

Sophomore Christy Fowler had her second hat trick of this season coming through and leading the way for her teammates.

Soccer: Lady Hawks Start District 53-4A Tonight

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

Canyon Lake’ s Lady Hawks will invoke on their District Season that gives them a chance for making the playoffs.

With a district that has five teams and having four teams that can qualify for a longer season (playoffs), then you can conclude that there will be only one team that is out of that realm of going farther.

Looking at pre district games you have three teams that will be fighting for those two spots.

Dripping Springs and Schertz Clemens will be on top of the food chain and Canyon Lake will be fighting it out with Seguin and Wimberley.

All three teams (CL, Wimberley, and Seguin) played one common opponent this pre-season.

Floresville had this privilege of playing all three teams so you can have a small glimpse of each teams strength.

Canyon Lake was the one team that beat Floresville while Wimberley and Seguin were both shut out by the Jaguars.

Next, you need to see when these games were played to help in deciphering how district games might play out.

Floresville beat Seguin just last week, 4-0 in Matador stadium. So a home game loss for Seguin and also a recent game is a good barometer on how this team might play when they are on the field against your Hawks.

Coaches Corner with Soccer Coach Katie McWhorter

Monday, February 11th, 2013

The ReSporter: You have been playing some teams that are two classes larger than CL. What are you wanting the girls to take from games like this as you prepare for District?

Coach McWhorter: “Our preseason schedule has no doubt been rigorous and jam-packed. As we prepare for district and play these games, I think that the team should get a better understanding of what we are going to be up against. Although our district has changed since last year, we are going to be up against some competitive teams who come from larger school districts. We need to get a feel of what teams like that are like in the preseason.”

The ReSporter: How many teams in district will qualify for the Playoffs?

Coach McWhorter: “The top four teams in our district will qualify for playoffs this year.”

Girl’s Soccer: Games and Coaches Corner

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Coaches Corner with Soccer Coach, Katie McWhorter.

The ReSporter: Canyon Lake did not lose a lot of Seniors, how young is your team and who will be some athletes you hope to carry your squad?

Coach McWhorter: “Although we didn’t lose many seniors last year, we only have two this year, so our team is a very young team. We are working hard at becoming a more aggressive and explosive team in the hopes that we will be one of the top contenders in our district for playoffs.”

The ReSporter: You have another year of facing schools that are much larger than the Hawks, how will that translate with how the team will approach this season?

Coach McWhorter: “While we are facing schools that are much larger than us, our team has a lot of skill and fight in them. We participated in three tournaments preseason, and most of the teams we played were from much larger schools with excellent soccer teams – some of them were even 5A schools. We held our own and did a really good job in our play.”
