Softball: Canyon Lake beat Hyde Park, 8-2

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Canyon Lake Softball team claimed their second victory against Hyde Park in a game played in Austin, Tuesday night.

The Hawks jumped out to a commanding four run lead after the second inning and rode Pitcher Missy Romero and Emma Broussard to the finish line in style.

Romero, because she held the home team to two runs and five hits.

Broussard, because she had only the second homerun for a Hawk in the short history of the program.

Head Coach John Gallagher talked about the at bat, “In the fifth inning Romero led off with a single, Young popped up to the catcher, and Daily reached base on an error. That put runners on first and third and Broussard came to bat and hit a ball deep to right, one bounce off the fence and rolled away….Broussard was at third by that time and the relay came to the second baseman and she rounded and beat the throw home.”

Katy Payne can still rest easy knowing that she still has the only conventional homerun over the fence, but it seems to be only a matter of time before Payne will have company in that department.

The Hawks will be in action starting this Thursday at the Blanco Tournament. Come out, take the short drive and support Canyon Lake.

to the Panthers, 7-5.

The Hawks finally figured out the Panther’s pitcher, but the four run seventh inning ended with a base running error squelching a chance for the comeback.

“We’re a young and learning team,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “This is on the job training.”

Before the last inning, CL was only able to scratch out three hits while scoring one run. The run came in the fourth inning and brought the game to within one run for a tie.

Canyon Lake started a new campaign in good shape as they whitewashed the Marion Bulldogs, 10-0 last Tuesday night at the Hawk Softball Field.

The top of the batting order was lethal as the Hawks had the first four batters reach base which resulted in a 60 pitch inning for Skylar Sullivan and six runs for Canyon Lake.

Mary Caroline Jordan started the frame with a single followed by a walk for McKenna Beseda. Missy Romero would not succumb to Sullivan as she worked the pitcher for 10 pitches and a walk to load the bases.

“I was very intense and wanted to win,” Centerfielder Jordan exclaimed. “I really liked being at the top of the lineup.”

The scrimmages are over and now it is time for Coach John Gallagher to put the puzzle pieces together.

“We saw a lot of players and now we have got to evaluate some talent,” Head Coach Gallagher said. “We have a clearer picture on where we can play players on Tuesday.”

The Hawks play this Tuesday at home against Marion starting at 6pm.

This will be a chance to see how a second place finish in District 26-3A last year will translate for a team that lost five players that switched their bat for a diploma last May.

In that number was a few players that made up the most important area on the diamond in the center.

Katy Payne, Tiffany Arredondo, and Alex Henderson were a few of the hard to replace positions on the team.

Senior Missy Romero coming back for more Dominance

Senior Missy Romero coming back for more Dominance

If the Canyon Lake Softball team can improve this season as much as last year’s team did, then you might see the Hawks make it to State.

Last season CL finished in second place in District play and made their first playoff appearance.  Wanting more of the same would be an understatement.

In 2010, the Hawks finished the year owning a 4-20 record and proceeded to turn that around to a very respectable, 18-12 for 2011 season.

Canyon Lake Meets Buzz Saw in Playoffs

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

The Canyon Lake Hawks hit a buzz saw in their first play-off try against Lampasas Badgers, losing two games, April 29-30.
A little history first: Lampasas was undefeated in district last season in 4A with the same team. The difference was their pitcher quitting before the season started. The season had a learning curve for a team that had played together since their eight grade year.

The Hawks do have seniors, but most of the team is Sophomore ladened and the difference in those two years was very pronounced.

The first game was a ‘comedy’ of errors as Canyon Lake allowed the first four Badgers to reach base via a miscue. When the carnage was over Lampasas had accumulated five base runners by errors, three singles, two walks, and a double. (more…)
