Canyon Lake Baseball Looks to Rebound

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

It wasn’t that long ago that the Canyon Lake Baseball team was coming back from a second round loss to Hidalgo after taking the 27-5 team to a three game playoff and one hit from making the third round.

The Hawks were then hit with a slew of injuries and players moving to give the 2011 season a rebuilding campaign.

So now, one year later, Canyon Lake will now enter this season with only one returning Senior (Dylan Adams) and two strong classes that have the potential to surprise some district foes.

How about, Travis Walker in his third year on the varsity. The catcher/third baseman/pitcher will be wearing a lot of hats.

If the Canyon Lake Softball team can improve this season as much as last year’s team did, then you might see the Hawks make it to State.

Last season CL finished in second place in District play and made their first playoff appearance.  Wanting more of the same would be an understatement.

In 2010, the Hawks finished the year owning a 4-20 record and proceeded to turn that around to a very respectable, 18-12 for 2011 season.

losing, 32-28 to Abilene Christian Panthers in Semi-Final action at Moody, Texas.

“Sometimes you have heard it said that you can get a victory out of defeat,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said. “In this game I can say that this Bracken team did not quit and played with pride to get the game to within four points and that close to a winning score on the final play.”

The ‘Hail Mary’ was actually hard to do based on a 30-40 mile per hour winds in Quarterback Eli Achilles face on that final play.

Four seconds was the time showing on the scoreboard with BCS needing 50 yards to see another day on the gridiron.

BCS is now into their third year of practicing during the

Thanksgiving holiday, but how are parent’s taking this ‘new’ holiday tradition?

“It’s worth it,” Scott Wilkinson, Austin Wilkinson’s Dad said. “If you are practicing then that means you are one game away playing for it all.”

Bracken Christian is preparing for a game of epic proportions this time around. The scuttlebutt going around internet sites is how both teams are bringing a lot of accolades to the gridiron for this Saturday’s clash.

So how did the Warriors practice go for this pre/Thanksgiving dinner?

“It was good,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said. “We’re healthy and the kids know the challenge that faces them.”

Bracken Christian is on a 25 game winning streak, but this game is different than games played before.

There seems to be more resolve and players practicing with a different intensity.

“Since day one we have talked about defense being the key to be successful,” coach Luke Chapman said.  “The kids have bought in and we made enough stops tonight to come out with a big win.”

Leading the way for the Hawks was Garrett Winters with 15 points. Taylor Lucas chipped in with 6 points and Skylar Tschoepe and Branton Kindla added 5 apiece.

The ReSporter always looks at common opponents first when preparing a Pre/Game article. Since Texas is such a big state, knowing about a team in the Abilene area poses a problem in finding info to share and help in reaching for ideas about a team. (more…)

Boy’s Basketball: Cedar Ridge beats Canyon Lake, 50-44

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

Canyon Lake (1-1) lost a tough game to Cedar Ridge last Friday at the Hawk Gym, 50-44.

The Hawks had to dig themselves out of a hole as they closed out the first quarter down by eight points. The game started tight with both teams not able to break loose as they were tied six all halfway through the quarter.

Cedar Ridge got separation after making a three pointer and increasing the lead to the end of the stanza.

Canyon Lake was finding it hard scoring points while shooting 30 percent in the quarter.

“We addressed that the shooting will be an issue initially,” Head Coach Jeff Maynard started.

If not for free throws, the Hawks would of been in even more hurt.
