Another week of Hawk activities is in the books and last week CL had some ups and downs.

Hawks Flying High & Beat Boerne

Hawks Flying High & Beat Boerne

The Volleyball Team has now finished their first round of District 28-4A competition with one loss and still have a good chance of finishing 1st or 2nd.

With their loss to Fredericksburg, Canyon Lake will need to sweep the next round meaning a big road game at the Billies gym to have a chance of sharing the district crown or with the help of the other 3 teams having a chance of sitting alone on top.

The Billies are on a roll and finished the first round unscathed and now with an off date this Tuesday, CL will start their round with a home game against Boerne this Friday.

Canyon Lake lost their first district game in a 5 set marathon at the Hawk Nest as Fredericksburg won the last two sets for the win.

The Hawks did start out lethargic with a sloppy first set as the Billies enjoyed a, 24-17 lead before a late CL rally left them short, 25-22.

Canyon Lake was nip and tuck in their next set as neither team had more than a 4 point lead. CL claimed that lead, 14-10, while the Billies were ahead, 3-1 early on.

Sophomore Paige Bower was instrumental in this win with 4 kills and 2 blocks.

Just an Usual Game for Freshman Volleyball in Win over Billies, 2-1

Just another game for this year’s Freshman Volleyball team as the Hawks went a max 3 game set in winning over Fredericksburg’s freshman and staying in first place in District 28-4A play.

Canyon Lake was on the short end in that first set as they had the lead through most of the game until a Billie rally that outscored the Hawks, 11-3 to close the set out and put CL right where they wanted to be. Behind in the contest to allow another comeback victory.

“We wanted it more,” Head Coach Tasha Ridgeway said calmly. “Lainee served like she wanted to win and she served to get aces….I haven’t seen her serve like that this year.”

Fredericksburg jumped out to a, 5-1 lead to start the second set and Canyon Lake had yet to find their consistency to the taller Billie team.

With the rotation finally able to forge more than a 2 point rally, the game and Hawks started cooking as the next 3 servers had a 2, 3, and then a 4 point rally and now the lead was up 6 points, 13-7 lead.

After having neither team able to close or increase their lead or deficit, Canyon Lake used a 5 point rally that put a dagger to the Goats in winning the game, 25-17.

Canyon Lake was able to reduce their unforced errors as each set continued and also by having 4 service errors for the game helped in taking the 3rd and final set with that sterling comeback.

Fredericksburg increased their lead in the final set on a service that started with both teams tied at 19 points. The bleeding was stopped on a kill by Cassidy Felps but not after the Billies would seize the game by 4 points, leading 24-20.

Lainee Moses took the ball and dished out some hard serves with two kills by Caroline Kullberg and an ace by Moses, the Hawks scored the last 6 points in the match for a win in dramatic fashion, 26-24.

“In practice I never serve like that,” Moses said on her way to the Promise Land. “The adrenaline was going fast and I was hitting the ball as hard as I could.”

Moses had some more thoughts on how she handled a game that hung on every serve, “Toss, Step, and Hit, was all I was thinking as I just went back to the basic level when I first started learning the game…..We do this all the time and this is just usual.”

On the last rally, Kullberg relayed, “I was super nervous and was trying hard wanting to win….when we worked our hardest we worked together.”

Alisia Niestremski had 12 kills while Kullberg shored up the middle of the Hawks offense with 8 kills which helped in securing the win on her last two swings.

Niestremski has a way of celebrating a kill which seems to get the whole Hawk team pumping. “I get pumped up with the point and I was trying not to be nervous but I was,” Niestremski said. “We just focused not to make mistakes and in our huddle we decided in not playing it safe and to be aggressive.”

Canyon Lake had a similar game last Tuesday in their victory over Boerne that went 3 games with a dramatic comeback similar to the win over the Billies.

“I reminded them of the Boerne game when we were down to them,” Coach Ridgeway said with the wisdom of Solomon.

Now this Freshman team will go up against Bandera this Friday with a goal of being undefeated in the first round of district play. This Hawk team beat the Bulldogs in tournament play earlier this year, 25-18 and 25-15 and will look to continue where they left off last month.

This is the same type of team last seen when last year’s Senior group started their high school career winning district and carrying that wave through their senior campaign with a Hawk District Championship.

Good things in store for the girls at Canyon Lake as Mountain Valley continues to feed talented ladies into CL’s high school.

Congrats and Go Hawks!!

The varsity volleyball game against Hondo, Friday night, gave Coach Kimberley Paisley the chance to utilize her bench and try new strategies and player positions. The Lady Hawks swept the Owls in three-game match, winning with scores of 25-7, 25-8 and 25-19.

In the first game Coach Paisley started her team as she always does, but quickly began to change things up allowing her players to take on different positions on the court to strengthen her chances against tougher teams. Hondo was unable to stand against the mental  toughness of the Hawks as they continued to place the ball in all the right places to score and that score quickly rose to 10-3. Paige Bower was a force to reckoned with at the net. If the ball hung at the top of the net, Paige was there to cram it into the Owls’ open court.

Don’t Underestimate the Jumping Ability of Perez

Canyon Lake Volleyball started where they left off last year in district play as the Hawks ran their streak to 14 wins in a row after sweeping Boerne, 3-0.

“Ever since last Tuesday night we have been having stellar practices,” Head Coach Kim Paisley stated. “We had a good film session and we were energized all night and did not let up.”

The Hawks took the first two sets with little resistance after, 25-15 and 25-16 victories. Then the 3rd set interjected a bit more drama as the Greyhounds started to find their stride as they rounded the corner on the track.

Coaches Corner with Volleyball’s Kim Paisley

Thursday, September 22nd, 2016
Head Volleyball Coach Kimberley Paisley

Head Volleyball Coach Kim Paisley

The ReSporter: You traveled 948 miles in-between your two home dates this season….how do you feel those road games might help as you get into district play?

Coach Paisley: “We have experience for the road games, and we will put that to good use for those district matches on our opponents home court.”

The ReSporter: There was a lot to replace from last year’s group, what are your thoughts going into next week’s game with Boerne?

Coach Paisley: “Boerne is known for their “crowd/student section heckling”. Maybe one of the best in the hill country as far as heckling during a volleyball match. They have been this way since I played in high school. We just have to block them out and focus on our match and our goals for district play. Boerne is going to battle it out and play some good volleyball. We must be ready to play and play our game!”

The ReSporter: What will you be working on this week and into the Boerne game?

Coach Paisley: “Passing and defense is the main skill to work on. We must always be perfecting this skill because we cannot do the rest without a pass.”

Hancock Mini-Mart Says Go Hawks

Hancock Mini-Mart Says Go Hawks

The ReSporter: Fredericksburg had a pretty tough schedule and is coming into district play on an upswing, how do you see your competition and what attribute will need to be emphasized in winning district?

Coach Paisley: “Fredericksburg is going to be tough just like Boerne! They will have big girls at the net. We’ve got to be ready defensively by making sure our blocks are in the right spot and closing so our defense in the back row can do their job. Offensively, we must move the ball around and run quick stuff in order to score.”

The ReSporter: What does or has Regan Mickey meant for your program as she enters her last district competition?

Coach Paisley: “She has been an outstanding member of the team and program. She understands this is her last district season as a Senior in High School. Like all of the seniors, we talked about what will be the legacy they leave behind. “What will be their final days as a High School Volleyball player be?” We regrouped after Tuesday nights match against La Vernia and discussed our goals we set at the beginning of season. We are ready and we believe and will achieve.

The ReSporter: Thanks Coach and enjoy this time off before district season next week.
