Lady Hawks Track goes Dancing at the Texan Relays

Sunday, March 26th, 2017

Alysha Perez sets new mark in 100 meter dash at Texan Relays

Canyon Lake went dancing at the Texan Relays in Wimberley last Thursday as all the teams performed well with some key athletes missing due to Dancing Competition that was scheduled that same day.

“I was proud of our efforts again on Thursday,” Head Girls Track Coach John Barthels stated. “We had a decent effort in basically two day practice, post spring break week and I was impressed with several of the results going into the wind.”

That wind was consistent throughout the meet and it showed no relief for those events that would have those runners heading south.

Skylar Hurst was high point once again with 26 points followed by Alysha Perez’s 19 points after shattering the 100 meter dash record by two tenths of a second. These same two students had first place finishes along with the 4×100 relay team.

“Obviously our 100 and 100 hurdle times improved with the wind at our backs,” Coach Barthels continued. “The form looked good from Alysha (Perez) in the 100 and she won so that was great.”

Hawks Stumble out of the Gate After Loss to Boerne, 6-3

The CL Hawk’s errors matched the Boerne Greyhounds runs in an opening District 28-4A loss at the Hawk Nest on Tuesday night, 6-3.

Canyon Lake’s bats were also quiet for the first 6 innings as the only Hawk inning that had pressure on Boerne happened in the 4th inning when Marley Carrizales led off the inning with the first hit and two stolen bases had this CL runner on third base.

A strikeout ended that threat and then the Hawks 10 consecutive outs until a one out single in the bottom of the 7th frame.

CL Hawks Baseball Takes another Loss from Boerne, 10-1

Ranger Cleaners says Go Hawks!!

Canyon Lake could only scratch off one run in their second run-ruled game game with the Boerne Greyhounds, 10-1.

There were two outs when Avery Montgomery reached base base on the Greyhound’s short-stop error.

JT Greene followed with a walk which advanced Montgomery with two on and two outs.

Enter Caleb Williams with a line drive single to left field to score Montgomery but that would be the extent of the damage on this night.

Repeat-Boutique Says Go Hawks and Repeat Winning

Canyon Lake will have their indoctrination into district competition this Tuesday when the Hawks will do battle with the Boerne Greyhounds.

CL will be the last district school to get in on the fray of competing as the Greyhounds will enter with a win over Bandera last week.

If the regular season records pan out then this will be a big game as both schools had the only winning record going into District 28-4A play.

Some games that should instill some angst for the Hawks came with a loss for Boerne but that school was Wimberley by one run (1-2) score.

Meanwhile, Canyon Lake has struggled in their two games with the Texans and a one run loss that the

Greyhounds had can tell you that this game will be a battle.

         Go Hawks & Beat Boerne

Canyon Lake did have a short scrimmage with Fredericksburg in the San Marcos Rattler Tournament two weeks ago but that game was only in the 3rd inning when rain shortened the contest.

The Hawks had a one run lead when the curtain dropped and that will be another game CL will have to be on their ‘A’ game when they match up with the Billies.

Canyon Lake has some good wins thus far but looking back on the pre-district games versus district games will let you know that the Hawks will not look or play like they did when the games did not have district implications.

The ReSporter sees many younger players with a ton of talent and how they play when the lights get brighter will be a big eye opener on how these next 8 games will pan out.

Tuesday will be a time of reckoning and with Coach John Gallagher being very intentional in having a tougher schedule, will hopefully pay dividends.

CL Hawks Softball Win Alumni Game in Hopes of Making new Memories

Canyon Lake’s Softball Team had a chance to play a game against the Lady Hawk’s from days gone by as the the Alumni game was enjoyed by all on a Saturday with food and honoring two former students.

This was a Saturday game that allowed the Softball and Canyon Lake High School a chance to pay respects for two recent events.

The loss of Heather St. John to cancer last August 15, 2016 and Megan Browning who lost her life in a car accident this past January 15, 2017.

Both of these young ladies had played Softball as well as other sports during their time at Canyon Lake.

Megan Browning and Heather St. John were both teammates during Canyon Lake’s playoff run in 2011 and many of these alumnus ladies knew and played with Browning and St. John while in high school.

CL Hawks Can’t Slow Down Greyhounds in Loss, 11-0

Sunday, March 19th, 2017

Hawks start District 28-4A with Loss to Boerne.             (mjrphotog.com)

The CL Hawks started their district playing a perennial powerhouse in Boerne and the Greyhounds played like one on Friday night as they got on their Greyhound for home after winning, 11-0.

Canyon Lake were put in molasses early as the Greyhounds were off and running in the first inning and never stopped with their two home-runs that ended up being enough to close up shop for another day.

“We are going to stay with our process and eventually it will get here,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant stated. “We will work on our fundamentals until we are blue in our face.”

Lady Hawk’s Track Team is on the Move

Friday, March 17th, 2017

Madison Blackburn starts her track season with 22 points in Bandera

The Lady Hawks Track Team have started to make their move as the team goes into those final meets before District 28-4A comes calling in April.

There will be two more meets and the next one will be in Wimberley and this venue should be close enough for the Hawk Nation to rally behind these students and encourage them during their events.

The Hawks had their best finish at the Bandera Meet before Spring Break and continuing with those type of results will be important during the next few weeks.

Junior Varsity finished first at Bandera and has had some high finishes in each meet this season.

CL’s Lady Tracksters need more students in order to make a bigger splash as you can deduce that many of the athletes scoring points are coming from the lower grade levels.

Boys Track & Field Look to finish Season Strong

Thursday, March 16th, 2017

Sr. Heath McDonough is ready for a strong track season.

The ReSporter has done some homework during this Spring Break time period to help those of you that are missing some sporting events during this ‘Break’ period.

There has been 4 track meets so far and The ReSporter has added the points that each athlete has totaled thus far during their season.

Some of the meets had less points scored simply based on the number of schools that were at those venues and another point silencer are those schools that are larger than Canyon Lake and with the number of students of those schools have participating can shut-out scoring too.

Depth for schools like a Fredericksburg is the best way for schools in track & field to dominate meets.

Track & Field is a sport that is a team sports based on the individual participants. There is not a bench and your team can have up to 3 athletes in events to score points by placing in the top six.

Hawks Finish Tourney on an Upbeat, Beat Jourdanton, 3-0

Canyon Lake showed signs of life after blanking Jourdanton in their last tournament game in Somerset, 3-0.

“We played two games real well,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant surmised. “In our loss to Somerset our pitching did not have a walk and everything they (Somerset) got they earned.”

CL had a stellar performance from the mound in the second game that has given that glimmer of hope that this season has a chance of pulling out better than their record indicates.

“Our team is not set up for having success in a tournament format,” Coach Dunavant said. “You play a lot of games in a few days and we do not have the depth on defense or on the mound….if we bring in a player in the field to pitch then we just had one of our best fielders switched and having a different player in that vacated spot will cause mistakes because of not being used to that position.”
