The JV football team had its opening moments for the 2016 seeing eye to eye, meaning the scrimmage in which they started off with this season was played against each other, at least in the beginning.

Smithville fielded a smaller team this season and as it would happen the freshman got first shot at the Tigers on the other side of the field as Fridays scrimmage began in leaving the JV to bash one another up and down the field to start the season.

The Junior Varsity squad is full of Juniors and Sophomores this season, so much so, that there will be a JV Gold team and Green team with each team looking to compete for district title like last year’s JV team accomplished under Coach Bartels.

Brandon Robinson readies himself for another good Hawk Season

The CL freshman football team took the field Friday afternoon against Smithville Tigers in their first ever look at high school football and picked up where they left off last year as a district champs at Mountain Valley Middle School.

The offense as well as the defense seemed to have their starters already figured out as a few players swapped in and out on the first teams during the scrimmage.

The Hawks first string offensive-line appeared to have a consistent work ethic in blocking a well sized Tiger front four as well as down field blocking assignments with their linebackers and secondary.

Canyon Lake Volleyball rebounded by winning 4 games on opening day at Wimberley Tex-Fest tournament.

The day started at 9am as CL seemed to be in a daze or still asleep as the Hawks had a lot of unforced errors but this game was turned around as Landry Hollums served for 6 straight points helping erase a 3 point deficit and a win, 25-22.

Hollums was able to get her two aces in during that comeback as Kaylie Duke and Regan Mickey helped with a kill each.

Canyon Lake were still shaky playing Caddo Mills in the first game, but after getting cobwebs cleared the Hawks had their most convincing win of the year getting separation and then pouring it on against the Foxes’ winning by 14 points.

Canyon Lake started their 2016 campaign with two losses against Schertz Clemens and Liberty Hill on Monday at the Hawk Gym.

Clemens was lethal as the Hawks found it hard to get offensive points that was not a result of a service ace.

“Clemens came out dominating,” Head Coach Kim Paisley started. “Liberty Hill played them better than we did….we had too many errors.”

Canyon Lake was a step late or pass gone awry throughout the contest.

“We would have a great dig and then hit the ball out of bounds,” Coach Paisley lamented. “Our intensity level picked up after that first set, they will have to set themselves apart and show that they are ready to play.”

Senior Heath McDonough is ready for a fresh start

The first week of practices are in the book, as the Hawks had their first Saturday practice in pads.

Now, at the end of next week, there will be a scrimmage to see how this first month of practices might translate for this upcoming season.

“No injuries,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated after finishing the first week of practice. “We still need to work on conditioning but I am pleased overall.”

CL’s defense seemed to have the upper hand for this morning practice.

“The defense is ahead,” Coach Drum reiterated. “But we need to get better every week on both sides of the ball.”

Over 200 student’s took part in fall sports starting this week on Monday.

Football had in the neighborhood of 140 of those while Volleyball and Cross Country all got in gear for what could be another good start of the school year.

Last year, Canyon Lake had their first district championship with the Volleyball teams as well as Boys Cross Country and Football going further after their regular season ended.

All three sports should be in line of upping their game again this year with the new district line-up.

Football will have Austin Eastside Memorial as the new entrant while losing Liberty Hill and Bandera from last year’s district.

That same young man made first team All-District as a Punter and second team All-District as a kicker.

There were two extra point tries that were blocked but only one missed try, in a career where Thorpe also made 9 out of 12 field goals.

That included the longest in Hawk history from 43 yards out in the Boerne game this past season.

Last year’s defense had some rocky moments and was a very inconsistent group as a whole.

The only thing consistent about last years defensive unit was how inconsistent they were.

There were a couple of games where the CL Defense worked their way into the top 10 of all-time games.

Those two games were Fredericksburg and Bandera as Canyon Lake gave up 144 and 194 yards respectfully in those contests.

Six of the 10 games on that all-time defensive yardage list, are games with the Billies and Bulldogs. So, that information might suggest that the Hawks match up very well with those two teams.

Summer time has time for vacation and taking a break before school starts in earnest in August.

For some students, there will be other opportunities like Speed and Strength camp through June and July.

Then you have athletes that just keep playing with select teams to get game competition in their favorite sports to acquire more repetition and experience as four Hawk girls did in Soccer.

Rachel Bennett, Ashley Fouse, Kaitlyn White, and Brandi Schimonsky competed last weekend in the 3v3 Live Under the Lights Tournament in San Antonio.

The foursome placed 3rd in the High School/Female Adult division.

“They did amazing,” Head Soccer Coach Ryan Tierney said excitedly. “This means the world to me as a coach, I love seeing individual athletes working hard in the off-season trying to improve upon their skills, speed, and strength.”

Coach Tierney was not finished, “As a coach, it makes me excited about the upcoming season and I cannot wait to see how those individuals who worked so hard are capable of.”

“I enjoyed getting to bond with part of my team more in preparation for the coming season,” Centerback Kaitlyn White said. “ And I liked just the experience of competing with them outside of  school ball.”

White will be a senior on this next year’s Hawk Soccer team and is coming off with a Second Team All-District honor after last season.

Rachel Bennett also shared her experience, “I believe these competitions help us stay in shape and keep our mind focused on the right things for the up-coming season.”

Bennett will be a Junior this coming season and this Center Midfield player was honored with a First Team All-District award after the season.

When asked how events like this will translate for the season in January, Coach Tierney said, “I have found that there is a direct correlation between these type of events and success on the soccer field.”

“It always seems that the athlete who does camps, tournaments, or just consistently plays the game or workout over the summers always comes into the new school year ahead of the rest. I have noticed those athletes seem to be the ones that make the difference in some way or another when the season roles around as well.”

Congratulations Ladies and the Hawk Nation will look forward to seeing you compete this coming school year.

Go Hawks!!
