Coach Paisley doing what she does best: Motivate

Coach Paisley doing what she does best: Motivate

The ReSporter: What do you do different this year compared to last year when you had so many girls that had so much experience?

Coach Paisley: “Well, no matter what group you have and how experienced they are, we give them every opportunity and push them to be the best they can be. We lost 7 seniors after this season, but we as coaches will challenge and push our athletes to be the competitive athletes. We are never the exact same year to year, and we have a totally new dynamic of a team this upcoming season. We will be teaching on a more tactical level with game situations and really express the “why’s” behind what we are teaching.”

The ReSporter: What have you seen so far that has made you say this could be another good year?

Coach Paisley: “We are the same Hawk team as far as expectations are concerned, but I have seen some great strides the girls have made through the offseason and club season. We really do have some great returners and some great kids that are up to the challenge filling in the holes left by this past year’s seniors.” (more…)

The ReSporter: How did this year stack up with your previous years?

Hawk after a downing several pounds of Crawfish

Hawk after a downing several pounds of Crawfish

Craw Martelli: “The 9th annual Crawfish Boil was a great year! The 7th Annual was a good year but it falls short of this years success. We boiled up 1200lbs this year and sold every last one ,compared to 750lbs in 2013.”

The ReSporter: Compare your first year with this last Saturday’s Crawfish.

Craw Martelli: “The first boil was just 4 family’s eating crawfish in the back yard and maybe finishing off two sacks-70lbs. Comparing it to HCB #9,……. it would be like me comparing the Slot -T offense to a Spread offense, Veer or three separate offense but its all football, ya just cant compare them as far as fundraising goes. However, its always goodtime to hang out with all your friends for a good cause- CL Athletics.”

The ReSporter: Having the event at Brookshire’s had to be a boost based on their location and how they support the Hawks, do you think that had anything to do with this year’s event?

Craw Martelli: “Brookshire Brothers really came through for us and the community. They are 100% behind our CLHS and its causes. Kenneth Moore the store Manager and Kaci Spence – the Lakeside Café and Bar Manager, really opened up the doors for us and the crowds kept coming steadily all day until 8pm. This location helped drive out of town people into the event and it helped the cash register chiming along, at least that’s what Dr. Hartman said, they keep me in the back and don’t let me out much.” (more…)

Missing Piece of Puzzle Found this Year for Lady Hawks

Emma Gray #5 after Hawk Timeout in Volleyball

Emma Gray #5 after Hawk Timeout in Volleyball

Last Summer a new student started practicing with the Varsity Volleyball girls as this young lady had played that sport at her old school.

What would be going through your mind if put in that situation when you are all of a sudden hanging out with future teammates and knowing that your sport would commence in 6-8 weeks.

Being separated from those friendships and your old stomping grounds would certainly take a special type of person to persevere their last year of high school in a new atmosphere.

Emma Gray had that situation at Canyon Lake this season as she started during those middle of summer months playing volleyball and without much rest, a segue into basketball, before finishing her one year of school in the hill country running track.

Another year of Hawk Sports has now been entered as The ReSporter finishes the 5th year of covering Canyon Lake.

During the month of May, The Resporter, will go over some of the best games to rekindle so many good happenings.

As this was the last year of having Yoakum, Cuero, La Vernia, and Gonzales in our district and next season, Wimberley and Navarro will also be going to other districts.

Canyon Lake will be the furthest school to the east as Fredericksburg, Boerne, and Bandera will be reunited with the addition of Hondo to round out the 5 team group of schools.

CL Hawks Finish with Good Taste in Mouth, Win 6-1

Senior Dylan Hodges leaves game with a smile

Senior Dylan Hodges leaves game with a smile

Canyon Lake finished their year with a win and on a night of celebrating Senior Night, you can note that the word Senior is not plural.

Dylan Hodges finished his career for CL by turning a double play and knocking in the final run of a 4 run third inning that iced the game.

Finishing with a .545 on base percentage, the Hawks, were clicking on all cylinders as the game only had one hiccup by giving up one run in that first inning.

Gonzales was first ball hitting in that first frame and a first pitch strike was stroked for a triple and the Hawks found themselves like so many other games this year, fighting from behind.

Crawfish Boil is coming this Saturday with All Proceeds going to Hawk Sports

Crawfish Boil is coming this Saturday May 7th

The ReSporter: So when did this all get started and why:

Martelli: “Since there was not a lot of people around the CL area who love bugs, a group of parents got together for the love of the bugs and invited others over to enjoy fellowship and talk about our new high school and little league sports while the kids all played around. The first year was the spring of 2008. It all started off pretty simple; we wanted to eat crawfish and no one around here even sold them, so necessity is the mother of all inventions, so we rolled forward.”

The ReSporter: Since that initial event, when did this event evolve into what it is today?

Martelli: “Well the first few years it was just a bunch of friends getting together to generate friendship spirit, a get together for everyone, something these parts are not known for especially back in those days. As word got out each year it grew and one day we thought there should be a charge for folks to come and give money away for the youth around here for sports.” (more…)

CL Hawks Have 11 Going to Region Meet

Canyon Lake’s Austin Camacho running to Kingsville after qualifying in the 800 meter run

Area Meet had some surprises as Canyon Lake will take 11 athletes to Kingsville this week for Region Meet after qualifying in Liberty Hill.

CL’s 4×400 meter relay team set the best mark in Hawk history when they crossed the finish line in 3:25.75 finishing in 3rd place.

A record that had stood strong for 4 years was eclipsed with this year’s foursome.

Back in 2012, Canyon Lake had gone two years with the same group of boys in all three relay events and they have had the best time since that year.
