The ReSporter: How much did all the fouls interfere with the flow of the game last night?

Head Basketball Coach Lucas Chapman

Head Basketball Coach Lucas Chapman

Coach Chapman: “It was a very long and choppy game. They were very aggressive from the start, which led to a lot of early fouls. It was hard to get into a rhythm offensively, but it wasn’t completely detrimental to what we were trying to do. Other than not capitalizing on shooting 50 FTs, we did very well.”

The ReSporter: Were you pleased with the overall play from the team?
Coach Chapman: “I was very pleased with our effort and energy and how we played. It was a tough game. Give Gonzales credit for coming out and playing really hard and making it tough. That is a place that is always tough to play at, so to come out of there with a grind it out win was huge. Good teams and playoff teams find ways to win games like that, and we did. I was very proud of our guys and the resiliency they showed.”

Canyon Lake, with last night’s win over Gonzales, accomplished something never seen on the hard wood with their 4th district win in a season.

The Hawks took care of business beating the Apaches, 59-47 and now sport a 4-3 District 26-4A record going into their game with Navarro this Friday at the Hawk Nest.

Rory Preiss led CL with 16 points while Brandon Ward showed the rest of the Hawks how to score from the charity stripe in scoring 12 points.

Canyon Lake had 51 chances of scoring points from the free throw line and cashed in just 23 times with Ward sinking 10 of those tries.

Another good game on the boards with 47 and 17 of those rebounds came on the offensive side.

             GO HAWKS!!

Canyon Lake had a big win on Tuesday as they avenged an earlier loss to Gonzales with a win, 38-30.

This victory evened their district record at 4-4 and 2-0 for the second round of play.

“This is a good win for us since we lost to them (Gonzales) last time,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher surmised. “We hit better from the free throw line and those were our only points in the fourth.”

Sarah Russell and Alexa Ramos finished in double figures with 15 and 12 points respectfully.

As the all important free throw played a huge roll, as the Hawks scored 15 points from the line and 9 of those shots in that fourth quarter in helping to secure this win.

CL Hawks and Gonzales played a tough and close game throughout the contest.

 =====================================================

Canyon Lake had a decent week in court last week as both Varsity teams won needed games as their district race matures into the latter stages.

The Lady Hawks needed a win over Yoakum as they now have a legit chance of making the playoffs.

That chance will be front and center this Tuesday as CL will travel to Gonzales for another must win as it was the Apache’s who won the first contest the first of January.

Canyon Lake showed in their last game they have some fire power scoring over 70 points and having several players contributing.

That game will need to be repeated again this week for the Girls as they showed during the first round with a winnable game against Navarro.

Playing at home on Friday might be that little extra needed to carry that game in the win column for the home team.

A sweep will make a mark and a break even week will give the Hawks more must win games in the weeks to come.

Canyon Lake Boys finished the first round 3-3 and if that can be repeated then a ticket to the playoffs would be next.

The Hawks have proven they could win more as they too played Navarro to the end earlier this year.

For CL to realize a better record the Hawks will need to not let up on any quarter as last Friday’s game the energy level was good enough for Yoakum but that same energy will be losses to the 3 teams presently ahead of them in the standings.

This second round of games will have Navarro and Wimberley playing at the Hawk Nest and that ingredient might be a missing link that could carry CL to a surprising finish.

Girls Soccer finished last week with a 1-0-1 record and this team certainly broke out with a 9 goal game on Friday beating Pleasanton.

“This game was a great confidence booster for our team,” Head Coach Ryan Tierney said.  “Every game I ask my girls to go have fun playing the game they fell in love with.”

That was certainly evident in this win as Canyon Lake got a goal from six different ladies.

“I feel the girls genuinely love each other and want to see everyone be successful,” Coach Tierney said. “ This game proves we play a team game, the way it’s meant to be played.”

Coach Tierney was making a point on this years club. The Hawks will be on the road this week and both games are very winnable and if CL can get these two wins, then they will be 6-2-1 going into their last week of non-district games.

The Boys Soccer team finished 1-1 this past week after playing a potent Giddings team and then getting back on track with a win over Pleasanton.

CL Boys Soccer will be on the road this week with games with La Vernia and Lampasas as this non-district schedule will come to a close after next week’s games.

Canyon Lake presently sports a 3-4 record and will look to improve on that mark in these next 4 games.

Go Hawks!!

Junior Heath McDonough helped with a jump start in win over Yoakum

Canyon Lake won their 10th game of the season scoring a 9 point win to end their first round of District 26-4A games, 50-41.

CL needed this win as they are now holding down a spot for a playoff berth if they just repeat what was done in the first round of games.

This win tied for the second most victories in a season at 10 when the ’12-’13 Hawk team finished that year.

Another district conquest and this Hawk team will accomplish their most wins in district play since they started playing varsity in ’08-’09 year.

Will Gray led the Hawks scoring 12 points and tied Brandon Ward with 3 assists.

With 17 turnovers, Canyon Lake was able to be in a sustainable area that allows the Hawks for a good outcome.

It was a book-end game as Canyon Lake outscored Yoakum, 31-17 in the 1st and 4th quarters. But were outscored 19-24 during the middle part of this contest.

The Hawks have had a two game slow down and this win over the Bulldogs could help in getting this team back on track as the second round of district games start to commence next week.

Bennie Brownlee was the top dog in this contest as he hit nothing but the bottom of the net in scoring 20 points.

Canyon Lake got a great contribution from the rest of the squad as each player had a say in how to train this dog.

Good defense came in the form of allowing just one point in the first quarter which helped in having a halftime lead, 29-13.

Lady Hawks Take Yoakum to Vegas in, 71-34 Win

Sarah Russell scores career high 23 points in win over Yoakum

Don’t get into a free throw shooting contest with Sarah Russell or you will lose, much like Yoakum did on Friday night, as the Lady Hawks took care of business in their, 71-34 victory.

Scoring 71 points was the most scored since a, 76-25 win over Johnson City when the Hawks started their 2013-14 season with a bang, 80 games ago.

Canyon Lake finished the first half with an 18 point lead but were quick to add to that advantage by outscoring the Bulldogs 19 points in those last two quarters.

CL got a lot of help up and down their bench having 4 girls scoring in double figures. Alexa Ramos (10), Sarah Schneider (12), Caitlin Mabry (14), and Sarah Russell (23), as all were instrumental in this out of control avalanche for a victory.

 ======================================================

The Hawks will make or break this week for both the Girls and Boys roundball as this Friday the Yoakum game will give a good indication on chances for this year having extra games for both clubs.

For the Lady Hawks, their game with Yoakum already has one game in the win column. This second game has to be even more convincing.

That would instill confidence for a team in need of that ingredient as CL engages their last round of district games.

For the Boys, Canyon Lake will have a chance of evening their district contests at 3-3 and with those three wins the Hawks can match their most wins for district conquests.

The ’09-’10 and last years club both reached the 3 win plateau leaving this set of games in reach for higher goals.

Canyon Lake has shown they can reach higher in the realm of games won and that might also help this year’s team to an actual playoff contest.

Finishing would be the operative word for the Hawks going into the next round of district games.

Start to finish, not only in a game but also in their quest of realizing a goal that has yet been reached.

More sports will start to get active as January comes into the latter stages.

For Soccer, the Hawks, have both boys and girls relishing with chances of making marks as district comes calling in February.

Right now CL has the Boys with a 2-4 record and girls wading the waters with a 2-3 stint so far.

Last week Boy’s Soccer had a 1-1 record with a win over Burnet and loss to Liberty Hill.

This week Canyon Lake will host Giddings on Tuesday for their first home game and then take the road once again to Pleasanton for another chance of beating the Eagles.

For the Girl’s Soccer Team, the Hawks scored 6 goals in their game with SA Cole.

Those scores came from 3 Sophomores as Alexa Ramos had a hat trick.

Canyon Lake finished their tournament in Pleasanton 2-1 giving the Hawks a 3-1 record for their week of play.

The Hawk Girl’s Soccer team will be on the road this Tuesday against La Vernia and then welcome their first home game on Friday when Pleasanton comes to town.

Softball will start their practice this week and will be preparing for their first scrimmages on February 4th.

Baseball and Track is also right around the corner with several Hawk teams ready for action.
