Thursday, December 3rd, 2015Lady Hawks Color Bandera Gray, 49-32
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015Canyon Lake won their first home game over Bandera on Tuesday night, 49-32.
“It was nice to get a win on our first home game,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “We had great fan support and the atmosphere was fun and exciting…we played well as a team and had a good solid defensive effort.”
The Hawks had two players reach double figures in scoring, as Sarah Russell chipped in 11 points while Emma Gray had a 21 point game coupled with 16 rebounds.
Gray did everything but shoot a 3 pointer in this win as she also had a team high 8 assists and 2 blocks.
Those 8 assists would usually be a team total or more on many nights as Gray dominated the inside with her play on both ends of the floor.
Hawk Boy’s Catch Fire & Beat Somerset, 65-60
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015Canyon Lake was on fire in the second half scoring 44 points and overcoming a 13 point halftime deficit in beating Somerset, 65-60.
“They got into a half-court trap that led to some mistakes and turnovers from us,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “That led to easy layups for them. We just got rattled a little bit and they went on a run.”
In the past, that type of half would mean more of the same and a bad loss as a result.
“I told the guys at half that if we take care of the ball, then we will be fine,” Coach Chapman recalled. “We had 12 turnovers in the first half and only 3 in the second half.”
That was the turning point as the Hawks have proved in past games that it is hard to score when you are not getting shots off because of mistakes on offense.
Scoring 44 points in the second half would be more than what the Hawks saw in whole games in the past.

CL Lady Hawks Beat Somerset for First Win, 41-28
Tuesday, November 24th, 2015The Lady Hawks were able to get their first win of the season against Somerset on Monday with a 41-28 victory last Monday.
“Well today was a good combination of solid defense and good transition ball,” Head Basketball Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “We did a good job of controlling the boards and our height finally came in handy.”
CL finished with 37 rebounds with 13 on the offensive side of the court. Those offensive boards help in making that low shooting percentage will help in getting that turkey to go down better this Thanksgiving.
“We are starting to get back to our gritty defense,” Coach Gallagher admonished. “We do show signs of improvement on our basketball IQ.”
Boy’s Basketball: Hawks Feast on Yellowjackets, 59-40
Tuesday, November 24th, 2015Canyon Lake got there first win over Llano on Monday as the Hawks stung the Yellowjackets, 59-40.
“We came out early and got into a full-court man,” Head Basketball Coach Lucas Chapman stated. “That led to some turnovers and easy baskets….we really attacked the zone well early on and got some points in the paint.”
Thirteen of the 15 players scored in this game as the points were spread over the whole court much like the press wreaked havoc on Llano as CL held Llano to just 3 points to start the game.
Heath McDonough and Will Gray both finished with 9 points while Brandon Ward and Jacob Ramirez coming in with 8 a piece.
Too Hawk to Trot 5K Event Update!
Sunday, November 22nd, 2015The ReSporter had an advertisement for the community a couple of weeks ago for a 5K Hawk Trot for the Canyon Lake Feeder schools.
Elizabeth Stearns was in charge of this event and The ReSporter had a chance to get news on how the extravaganza went.
The ReSporter: What is the history for this event?
Stearns: “We had our first 5K with just Startzville Elementary Nov 17, 2012 and then decided we needed to make it a community event. I am a runner and my kids beg to do the obstacle runs with me but most have an age limit. Because of that I wanted to make this an obstacle course that the whole family could do. I want our community to love being active together.”
The ReSporter: What is your purpose so you can get the word out for next year?
CLJV Football Stats and Warning Signs for Rising Water
Sunday, November 22nd, 2015Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity football team was another success story as this team also won their district race as their were several high marks in accomplishing this goal.
Number one, is having a team that was comprised of mostly sophomore students.
What is significant about this tidbit?
This year, the Hawk Varsity, had the most sophomores playing varsity than CL’s first official year of putting on the pads.
So with a number of players already in an upgraded uniform, you can see that winning district would compliment the number of players still not able to make the jump to that next level.
Thank about how a group of players that not more than 2 years ago were playing in Mountain Valley as 8th graders that has now lost practically that whole ‘A’ team that ran through that successful campaign.
CL Hawk’s Boys Basketball Can’t Finish in Loss to Billies, 67-44
Saturday, November 21st, 2015
Canyon Lake is still in their infancy as Fredericksburg won each quarter in this win, 67-44.
“We did some good stuff,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman stated. “We could not finish shots or our free throws…but I liked our energy and effort and we were much more engaged in this game.”
To accent, Coach Chapman’s comments, the Hawks could not finish on the offensive side shooting 32% from the floor while leaving a possible 17 points at the charity stripe.
You can not expect perfection from the free throw line, but making 60-70% would have brought a whole new dynamic to this game in the second half.
The Billies buried Canyon Lake from they’re free throw stripe making 79% of those shots for 15 points in the second half.
