Canyon Lake beat the Lockhart Lions on Tuesday night in a 3 game sweep as they will begin a 3 day NEISD Tournament starting this Thursday.

The Hawks had some good news as the injury to Addison Farley might not be as bad as first thought and an earlier return possible.

CL did take care of business against Lockhart as the Hawks improved their record to 7-2 with the sweep, 25-14, 25-11, and 25-23.

Canyon Lake ended the first game with an 8-2 run with their 11 point win when Hannah Wunderlich finished the Lions off with a kill and serving ace.

This Week @ Canyon Lake

The Hawks had a decent week with a 3rd place finish in Volleyball, finishing, 6-2 for the week.

CL fashioned a 6 game winning streak during the Tex-Fest Wimberley tournament after missing by one game for a chance of playing for the championship game.

Canyon Lake will be waiting to see what the prognosis for Senior Outside Hitter, Addison Farley, who turned her ankle right before the Semifinal game with Peaster was about to start.

With that loss, Canyon Lake had to revamp their line-up and just could not muster enough to take that match.

Hawks hold their own in scrimmage with Gonzales last Friday at Hawk Stadium.

Canyon Lake will be using younger players when the season starts in two weeks and that was certainly noted in the Friday scrimmage.

“I was pleased on how our scrimmage went,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We were wide eyed and I thought we matched them punch for punch.”

With the youth age upon the Hawks being wide eyed is certainly something that might have been expected as Canyon Lake suited up some players that were waiting another 2 weeks last season as 8th graders to find their jersey number.

A well oiled machine will not be expected at this time of year as the Hawks also search for a quarterback and two running backs lost in last year’s senior class.

Between those players lost, Canyon Lake, will need to replace 74% of their rushing yards and a whopping 86% of yards gained by the forward pass.

The Hawks started an early game against Boerne Geneva with two hard fought wins, 25-20 and 28-26.

That first game was nip and tuck as both teams could not get separation finding themselves tied, 10-10.

With a 16-13 lead, Faith Hasness service was able to expand the lead to, 21-14 with two kills from Addison Farley, a block with Emma Gray, and a Hasness ace along with good passing.

In the second game, Canyon Lake and Geneva were tied 10 times, the largest lead for CL was 23-20 with Gray getting the final kill for the win.

Farley and Bailey Drum both chimed in with 12 kills in the Hawks next game against district foe, Cuero.

CL Hawks have a 4 game winning streak after taking all three games opening Friday at Wimberley’s Tex-Fest Tournament.

Canyon Lake did not lose a game on Friday as they won both games in a 3 game series against Ingram, Hardin, and St. Andrew schools.

The duo of Addison Farley and Bailey Drum were instrumental in the onslaught as Farley finished the day with 20 kills while Drum accumulated 17.

The Hawks used several different lineups as the first week of games had Head Coach Kim Paisley moving the players around as a master in a chess match.

“We are just giving opportunities and trying to see what works with the girls in different spots,” Coach Paisley said. “It is still early and we are just in our fist week of games.”

Hawks are 16 days away from suiting up

Canyon Lake is busily working each day for their first scrimmage this coming Friday at Hawk Stadium and from all indications the practices are going well.

The Hawks will be a young team this season, but conversely, that younger group of players have a lot of talent or that proverbial word……potential.

The ReSporter had a series of Hurdle articles this Summer and will be bumping them back to the front page as we get closer to the start of the season.

Those slow starts was the first of those series and that next hurdle article will be bumped up today.

Hawks Split with Liberty Hill and Clemens as Season Starts

Canyon Lake Volleyball starts season with a win over Liberty Hill after losing their first match to Clemens.

The Hawks rebounded quickly in their games with Liberty Hill as they jumped out to a 14-9 lead and increased it to a 7 point win.

In the second game, CL took advantage of Panther’s unforced errors for an easy 12 point victory and momentum going into their best of 5 third game.

The 3rd game had LH with a 14-12 lead, but the Hawks outscored the Panthers 13-6 to close out that final game.

Canyon Lake had close games with Clemens, but just could not mount any rallies to help put one of their first two games away.

“It was good we played them close,” Head Coach Kim Paisley started. “We had to work for every point and they (Clemens) came out to play with enthusiasm and they were just outdoing us at the net.”

The first two games could have gone either way as the Hawks fought back in that first game to take their first lead, 22-21 as CL was behind as much as 5 points during this contest.

CL started with the lead, 10-6, in the second game but it was short lived as Clemens answered that Hawk rally and lead throughout that second game after they wrestled away the Hawks lead.

Clemens and Canyon Lake was a nip and tuck match, as the lead never got more than 2 points as each team battled to the finish line.

The Hawks are loaded, with their largest class of Seniors in a while, as this group of players has been instrumental in bringing Canyon Lake back to the playoffs with their 2nd place district finish last season.

The ReSporter had a chance to catch this group of seniors after their win over Liberty Hill.

The ReSporter: You have had a lot of success throughout the years, how do you plan of making this year work?

Bailey Drum: “We are very close and Emma (Gray) will fit in great!”

The ReSporter: Drum was talking about newcomer Senior Emma Gray playing as the middle blocker.

Hannah Wunderlich: “We have all grown physically and mentally with our skills and now we are ready to go more rounds in the playoffs as well having a better record than last year.”

The ReSporter: What is it like to be here for your first year as a Senior?

Emma Gray: “It is hard to get the chemistry but this has not been that bad….I love the middle blocker and that is my favorite position.”

The ReSporter: It is a good fit when one of the main positions lost from last year’s group of seniors was losing Lillie Sander the middle blocker and now you get to fill that role right off the bat.

Alexis Robinson: “That was what we needed, Emma (Gray) will fill in nicely for us.”

The Resporter: What has Coach Paisley done to help you have the right mental strategy for your games?

Addison Farley: “She does not like to lose and that helps us to want to win and do better than last year’s team.”

Bailey Drum: “It started last year and it is how she teaches us to take each game.”

The ReSporter: Good luck girls and The ReSporter looks forward to following you this season! Go Hawks!!

You will be able to come back to this page for score updates with each passing day and many times the score will be reported on this page before the write-up will be posted.

The ReSporter would also like to remind many of you that if you would like to ‘Ad’ on this site then to be eligible for the Advertiser’s Football Pick’em Contest the time to get aboard is August 21st.

Just a reminder that the cost for having an ‘Ad’ is $50 per semester and if you pay an extra $35 then your Ad will be added to articles written. Many advertiser’s will tell The ReSporter if they have a preference on the type of article they would like to be seen.

The ReSporter had more readership this past year with 26,754 pages consumed vs. 22, 954 the previous school year.

There were 8,287 users which also topped the previous year by over 800 people.

This is a break even business and helping in this way would keep The ReSporter having the site turned into a subscription bases.

First Week of Hawk Practices comes to a Close

Saturday, August 8th, 2015

Canyon Lake’s football season had their first intra-squad scrimmage this past Saturday as the first week of practice came to a close.

The Hawks will be a young team this year after losing 25 seniors on graduation day and returning 8 offensive/defensive starters from last season.

Good news is how well the Junior Varsity squad played in 2014 and a loaded Sophomore class that will more than be ready to take their next step in replacing those players.

“Were young,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated after the scrimmage. “We look young and we were a good JV team today….but we had a good week of practice and we are now in the process of finding the pieces for this year’s team.”

Canyon Lake will go into their third year of the slot-T and that will help this young group of players in their adjustment time.

Second Tunnel Car Wash is a Success!!

Rendition of what the Hawk Tunnel will look like

Rendition of what the Hawk Tunnel will look like

This past Saturday the CLHS Football team s players and Dad’s had another Car Wash Fundraiser to help gather funds for the new Hawk run through tunnel for the Varsity games and hit the $1101.00 dollar mark. The Family Dollar Store, ORielys Automotive in Sattler and CVS in Startzville again came through in true Hawk spirit and allowed the Football teams to hold the event from 0930 -230pm. The Store Managers Ms. Faye Kuykendall at the Family Dollar Store, Wendy Rohimeier at ORielys and Johnny Laho of CVS in Startzville all are huge CL Hawk supporters and have committed to come to some of the football games this season.

The two Car Wash fund raisers put on by the football team generated over $3,600.00 in working donations which is more than half needed for the CLHS Hawk Tunnel. “It is great to see these young men working to earn their way towards this new tunnel in which putting a little skin in the game themselves , this will build a sense of accomplishment, pride, team work and community awareness in the sense that they will pass down this new tradition which will add the CL spirit”, said Mr. Martelli who help organize both events with Rufus Woods.

Seniors Dylan Hodges, Austin Camacho, Roberts Woods showed CL leadership by their action by working at both Saturdays fundraisers as did Sophomores -Micah St.John , Ross Snowden and Tanner Faris. Sr. and Three Year Varsity Letterman Robert Woods said, “We wanted to show the community, our Coaches, the school and our teammates that we could step up to the challenge and do our part for this new tunnel but also to start build traditions for others to follow”. Each person getting a car wash received a 2015 Football schedule and was asked to attend at least one home game if possible.

CLHS football Alumni Tristan (Woody) Woodruff and Hayden Dubios showed up and donated their time and money towards this new tunnel. “Woody stated that “I wish more players would take pride in CL not for only a season but for their entire up bringing here at Canyon Lake and understand that what we have going on here is really cool, ya just gotta get into their heads early on”.

Team mates Eathan Killgore (Soph) Wesley Madzy (Soph), Jacob Foster(Soph) and Caimen McDonough(Soph.) all pitched in Saturday as well as Chris Shultz (Sr.), Austin Brennan(Sr.)Haden Lee(Sr.) and Dylan Dittman(Sr.). Heath McDonough and Colton McDonald were the only two Juniors to ever show up in both car washes as was Jordan Burke was the only (Fresh) there to represent this past Saturday. Last week Freshman Cameron Hebert, Chance Martelli and Tristan Chacon came out to work to put their time in.

A big thank you goes out to Mr Woods, Mr Faris and Mr. Martelli for being supportive and helping put in time for both of these Car Washes.

The new Hawk Tunnel has been ordered and will be able to be delivered by August -17th upon completion. The final payment to get the delivery of the Hawk Tunnel must be made by August 12th here to CLHS on time for this season “Meet the Hawks” on August -21st. So if you’re going to donate please do so now at the information listed below. Mr. Woods stated that “there are many people who said they are going to donate but have yet to do so thus far. If we could get some of these folks to come to the table then we will be on target in getting the total needed to remit final payment”. As of now the CLHS Football still needs to generate about $3,600.00 by the August 12th deadline, it’s as simple as that.
Each person or business contributing a tax deductable donation will have their name(s) listed in this year’s sports program under a special section on the New Hawk Tunnel.
If you are business or parent in the Football pipeline which your boy(s) will run through this tunnel and are willing to donate towards the Tunnel Fund go to www.CLHSABC.com and click Hawk Tunnel through Pay Pal. All donations are Tax deductable through the CLHS Booster Clubs 501(c)3 – CLHS ABC 8555 FM 32 Fischer Texas 78623, memo : Hawk Tunnel.
On another quick note, stay tuned here on the Hilltop News Paper for upcoming news and announcement in August for the push on “Painting of the CL Water Tower” this fall.
Keep it, HAWKSTRONG!
