CL Hawks Roll Snake Eyes in Loss to Boerne, 42-35

Robert Woods in run against Bandera earlier this year.

Like four of the five losses this year by seven or fewer points, the River Boat Gambler Hawks, needed just one touchdown for a win, losing to Boerne, 42-35.

“They (Canyon Lake) played their butts off tonight,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We have to learn to finish ball games…we were playing to win and we needed to make plays and that is something that we need to fix.”

The Hawks were either tied or led throughout this contest except when it mattered most, when the game clock hit 0:00.

Losses this year with seven or fewer points:
 Wimberley 27-28
 Lampasas 14-21
 Liberty Hill 14-19
 Taylor 31-33
 Boerne 35-42

Mountain Valley 7th and 8th Grade Football teams completed their seasons with District Championships as the Greyhounds could only place in a ‘Dog Run’.

The MVMS 8th Grade started where they left off in their previous match-up with Boerne by applying that suffocating defense while the offense just ran up and down the field like they were Greyhounds.

The ReSporter had too many games on it’s plate on Thursday as the CL Volleyball Playoff game against Sealy took precedence on coverage.

However the following two articles were penned by Coaches Juan Lopez and Brandon Pawelek. Thanks Coaches for helping The ReSporter with these write-ups.

Coaches Corner with Canyon Lake’s Charley Drum.

The ReSporter caught up with Head Coach Charley Drum at CL’s first round Volleyball playoff game with Taylor last Tuesday.

The ReSporter: Hey Coach how has this week’s practices been going in preparation for the Boerne game this week?

Coach Drum: “Going good.”

The ReSporter: What are some things your team will have to focus on going into this game?

Coach Drum: “We have to tackle them…If we allow Dormady (Boerne’s QB) to sit back like a game of 7 on 7, then he is pretty good.”

The ReSporter: Boerne not only had a good quarterback but his number one target is also a great weapon for them.

Coach Drum: “We will try to bracket him, but they have other receivers that will hurt you…they all can catch the ball, we will just need to limit those big plays.”

             Greyhounds (6-2 & 4-1) Hawks (4-5 & 2-3)
Series Record with Boerne is tied 2-2.

 Hawks 43 Smithville 14 Boerne 41 Medina Valley 15
 Hawks 38 Marion 06 Boerne 07 Marble Falls 40

 Hawks 49 Billies 31 Boerne 28 Liberty Hill 37
 Hawks 31 Taylor 33 Boerne 24 Bandera 15

The records of the two schools for this week’s game would certainly point to Boerne being a favorite to win this game on Friday.

You will have two teams that are offensively on two ends of the spectrum in their philosophy.

Boerne will pass on first, second, and third down and CL Hawks will run on those same three downs.

Both defenses will also be on opposite ends of the spectrum in that the Hawk’s defense only sees a running offense for the year while the Greyhounds are always playing against a passing offense.

The question would be what defense will have the most success on Friday night in order to get a win.

Canyon Lake will need a win to get the second seed in District 14-4A-I and if a loss ensues, then Canyon Lake will have to go to a scoreboard to see if they are a third or fourth seed based on the other district games.

And, there is another scenario where CL would be out of the playoffs. (see Playoff Implications article for clarification)

Canyon Lake faced a passing offense with Bandera earlier this year and seemed to be in good shape in that game.

Gordon the Plumber Supports CL Hawks Football

Gordon the Plumber Supports CL Hawks Football

The difference in Bandera and Boerne passing game would be, passes that Bandera threw were primarily shorter passes to the flats.

Boerne will go more vertical in their passing and that will stretch the defense with bigger chunks of yards as the result.

QB Quinten Dormady will be the rifle arm for Greyhounds as he has thrown 342 passes or an average of 38 a game. Boerne has averaged 22 completions a game with a 14 yard per catch average.

Boerne’s rushing game is an after thought and will mostly be in the hands of Dormady as the main cog in that part of their game.

David Snelling will be Dormady’s main go to guy as he has been the recipient of 70 catches for over 1000 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The Greyhounds have six receivers with double digit catches and those six players start with 182 yards via the pass on up to Snelling’s impressive yardage total.

Eli Davis will be second on the totem pole with 46 receptions and a cool 638 yards.

This offense is much like the running game for Canyon Lake where you pick your poison on who you want to stop and hope you are right more often than not.

Main points for giving Canyon Lake a chance in this contest?

No Turnovers. Whoever has the ball the most will win.

Long….Long….Long drives with touchdowns being a result will put pressure on a passing team.

Taking that time off the clock does not give a passing offense like Boerne enough times to run up a score and get into a rhythm.

In that Liberty Hill game with Boerne, the Panthers had over 450 yards rushing and that took the air out of the ball for Boerne’s passing game.

Canyon Lake will not stop Boerne but getting stops is still important and the more times the defense can pull that off, the better the chance of a win for the Hawks.

So this game really comes down to how well the defense plays and what happens in that turnover tally.

As those two pieces of the puzzle go, so goes who will win this game.

Go Hawks Beat the Greyhounds!!

Volleyball: CL Hawks Make History in Win over Taylor

Hawks getting ready for their Playoff run after Honoring America!

Canyon Lake can now mark another item off their ‘Bucket List’ when they took care of the Taylor Ducks in three sets and getting their first playoff win in three playoff tries, 25-15, 25-13, and 25-21.

“It was a good win,” Head Coach Kimberley Paisley said. “This means we get to keep playing.”

Pick your poison on who you Block Ducks

The Hawks jumped out to big leads in their first two sets as they continued the same type of game against Taylor they had enjoyed in their match that was played earlier in the Cedar Park Tournament.

“Taylor played better in their third set,” Coach Paisley continued. “This was another bucket list that we set out to accomplish this season in winning the first playoff game. Now everything we do from hear on out is accomplishing another bucked list.”

That Bucket List is pretty full now as, CL will now see about getting some bigger buckets while this season continues into Thursday’s game with Sealy.

The dynamic dual of Bailey Drum and Addison Farley were once again lethal to the Ducks as both players had double digit kills, 16 and 15 respectfully.

Football Playoff Implications for Canyon Lake

Hawks searching for that #2 seed just like the defense last week in game with Taylor.

Hawks searching for that #2 seed just like the defense last week in game with Taylor.

If you have seen what the 14-4A-I standings look like then you certainly can deduce that their are several ways that the seeding could end based on what is happening this Friday.

First off, Liberty Hill has clinched the first seed by winning the district and having a head to head win over Boerne, regardless of what happens in there game with Bandera.

Boerne can clinch the second seed with a win over CL Hawks and that would put that third and fourth spot up for grabs.

A CL Hawk win over Boerne would put the Hawks as the second seed.
Liberty Hill 5-0 Liberty Hill beat Bandera
CL Hawks 3-2 Hawks beat Boerne
 Boerne 3-2 Loss to Hawks.
Fredericksburg 2-3 With a win over Taylor
 Taylor 1-4 Loss to Fredericksburg
Bandera 1-4 Loss to Liberty Hill

======================================

A Hawk loss and a Bandera and Taylor loss would have CL Hawks placed in third place.
Liberty Hill 5-0 Liberty Hill win over Bandera.
Boerne 4-1 Win over CL Hawks
CL Hawks 2-3 Hawks get third place based on earlier win over Billies.
 Fredericksburg 2-3 Fredericksburg beat Taylor.
Bandera 1-4 Loss to Liberty Hill
 Taylor 1-4 Loss to Fredericksburg.

=======================================

CL Hawks would receive fourth spot based on head to head loss to Taylor last week.
Liberty Hill 5-0 Liberty Hill beat Bandera
Boerne 4-1 Boerne beat your Hawks
 Taylor 2-3 Taylor beat Fredericksburg
CL Hawks 2-3 Hawks loss to Boerne
Fredericksburg 1-4 Fredericksburg loss to Taylor
Bandera 1-4 Bandera loss to Liberty Hill

=======================================

A Hawk loss to Boerne and a Bandera/Taylor win over Liberty Hill/Fredericksburg...
Liberty Hill 4-1 Loss to Bandera
Boerne 4-1 Win over CL Hawks
Bandera 2-3 With win over Liberty Hill
Taylor 2-3 With win over Fredericksburg
CL Hawks 2-3 With loss over Boerne
Fredericksburg 1-4 With loss to Taylor

So, are you confused now? Let’s keep this simple and say that CL Hawks still control their destiny with a win over the Greyhounds and that would put them at their highest seeding.

That statement is important as it would pit CL Hawks against a third seed in the competing district.

If Canyon Lake loses and Taylor and Bandera both win then your Hawks are thrown back four years ago when they lost out on the playoff picture when they possessed an 8-2 record.

Texas Country RV supports CL Hawks Football

Texas Country RV supports CL Hawks Football

Taylor can certainly win their game with Fredericksburg, but one thing has been proven by Taylor so far this year is that this team is not the same group the Hawks faced when playing on the road.

But, that Duck team that beat your Hawks last week did not look like a team getting their first win.

Bandera gets Liberty Hill at home and that is the good news. The bad news for the Bulldogs is that Liberty Hill’s offense is the same one that the Hawks scored 37 points on.

The ReSporter feels a win over Boerne is more likely than people think.

Reduce the turnovers and Canyon Lake can win this game with an offense that can chew up the clock and keep the Greyhound’s passing offense off the field.

Think back in the days when the Hawks played Navarro and your Hawks were a passing team. The pressure of having to score each time with the ball was paramount based on how those Panther teams could get the ball anywhere and score and drain the clock.

Liberty Hill rushed for 443 yards against Boerne and the Greyhounds only had 33 plays to run versus 80 plays for the Panthers.

Both teams were even on the turnover game with two a piece.

Pretty simple. Canyon Lake can win this game and that will make that mess above in this article much easier to understand.

Go Hawks beat the Greyhounds!!

Hawk’s Missed By Inches in Loss with Taylor, 33-31

Haden Lee getting one of his 10 tackles on this night against Taylor

Canyon Lake just missed a chance for a win as their field goal attempt was just short in their loss in Taylor on a Halloween night, 33-31.

This game started like the past two weeks when Josh DeVries fielded the kick-off on the Hawk one yard line and 88 yards later CL was setting up shop at their 11 yard line.

Four plays later, Robert Woods was running the ball into the end-zone from two yards out and a quick lead, 7-0.

Taylor would respond with a 61 yard drive in a five minute span, but a blocked kick would preserve a lead, 7-6.

That blocked extra point would happen two more times on this night as Canyon Lake put pressure on their kicker all night long.

Canyon Lake scored the next 10 points when Mike Thorpe was good from 32 yards out and then after a successful on-side kick, the Hawks would drive 48 yards in just two plays for a, 17-6 lead.

On that first drive, Quarterback Skyler Tschoepe would run the ball four of the 11 plays which would be more runs than he had in the whole game with Fredericksburg last week.

Hayden DuBois had an explosive play for 32 yards, on that drive, which had CL down on Taylor’s 21 yard line.

The door was shut on this drive, by the Duck’s defense, and Canyon Lake settled for a 32 yard field goal.

“They got off of their blocks fast,” Coach Charley Drum said when reacting to how Canyon Lake was not running their usual plays they had success with other clubs this year.
