This is The ReSporter’s last Coaches Corner for Softball as we find out about the season that just finished.

Head Softball Coach John Gallagher

The ReSporter: What are some areas that you will wanting these girls to work on as we wait for their opening next season?

Coach Gallagher: “I want each player to work on the basics. Throwing properly, accurately with confidence, along with their hitting/bunting. The speed and agility workouts. I would also hope that we have many girls playing in the summer. This is huge when you can play softball for six months or more compared to three during the school year.”

The ReSporter: How do you assess this past year in comparing Regular Season vs. District Season?

Amber Ramsey will be taking her talents to Our Lady of the Lake University to play Volleyball as she signed on the dotted line Wednesday afternoon in the Hawk Gym.

This was a first on many fronts for Canyon Lake as this was the first signing in the afternoon, but more impressive, was Head Coach Mark Lee for OLLU was in attendance for this occasion.

Two things that has not happened until this day, showing how important a student and player Ramsey was and will become.

Ramsey has been around for what seems to be ages as she showcased her skills as a Freshman through her Senior year for the Hawks.

Her height allowed her to show off her play at the net for her career and now that talent will be on display in San Antonio next year.

Hawks Lose to Navarro, 8-4

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

Hawks could not pull out a win over Navarro losing in extra innings, 8-4 losing their fifth game in a

row and 7 out of their last 8 games.

This loss will put Friday’s in game in desperation mode as Canyon Lake will be trying to salvage a playoff spot.

Now CL will need to win in Navarro on Friday or face the possibility of not making the playoffs.

Fredericksburg won their game over Bandera and share the same district record as the Hawks and a CL win over Navarro would result in a 3-way tie for two playoff spots.

A coin flip would determine which teams that would need to play an elimination game for that 4th spot.

CL Hawks Softball is just around the Corner

That phrase will be here before you know it as Hawk fans will have some sweet

dreams while waiting for that first pitch next February, 2015.

Hitting was certainly in good form this season as CL decided to restitch some new covers for those Softballs.

Homeruns were certainly a site that has now been seen enough times to verify that the long ball can be hit with some degree of authority at the Hawk Diamond.

Nine homers this season that had 10 triples and 25 doubles coming along as traveling companions.

This Week @ Canyon Lake

This Week @ Canyon Lake

Another year is almost over as Canyon Lake is now down to two sports still running their engines.

Pitcher Nick Kissell will be trying to turn the tide to wins this week against Navarro

Track & Field will be in Kingsville this week, as they will be attempting to make a trip to State a reality.

The ReSporter has an article about that event posted if you would like to read about these students.

This Track team is very young and you will have many opportunities to watch these athletes improve on their marks made this season and hopefully a few more to come after this week.

Baseball is down to their last two regular season games.

Navarro will be in town this Tuesday and a win by Canyon Lake will allow you to not just pencil the Hawks for a post season spot—-you can also use ink.

Canyon Lake has been on a downward spiral the past couple of weeks but baseball is a sport that can change on a dime based on pitching and fielding.

Hitting is also in that formula, but pitching and defense can usually trump those batters which makes this game an intriguing affair to behold.

The Hawks won their first round game with the Panthers and you can bet that team is no longer around as Navarro is also in a place where they can also reach the playoffs by beating Canyon Lake in their two games this week.

Fredericksburg is the other team vying for a spot and if they are swept by Bandera, then both Navarro and CL will be playing more games next week.

Canyon Lake needs to get off to a good start and have some wins to craft some momentum going into the post season.

With a 3rd or 4th place finish, CL will certainly be playing a 1st or 2nd place team in District 28-3A giving a tough first round.

Track & Field Hawks will be off for Region Meet this Week

Sunday, April 20th, 2014

Canyon Lake will have 7 athletes taking a van to Kingsville next week after competition in their Area Meet last week in Hawkville.

Sophomore Bailey Drum will represent the ladies after a personal best triple jump of 36-02 and winning this event.

Bailey Drum keeps that great Triple Jump tradition going for the Hawks

From Head Girls Coach John Barthels, “Bailey was tied for 4th place going into the Area Meet with a jump of 34-07. The young lady she was tied with jumped 35-00 on her first attempt putting pressure on Bailey early. Then Bailey jumped her season and career best of 34-09.00 before being re-arranged for the finals.

She had one jump that I told her would have been 36-00 if she had not scratched by half a foot. She was still in 5th place going into her final jump, where she needed to have a 35+ attempt. Then she perfectly hit the board and exploded to a 36-02.00 jump, giving her 1st place over everyone.”

CL Hawks Finish Season but Hope Springs Eternal & Top Five

Saturday, April 19th, 2014

Canyon Lake went to battle again in their last game of this season with a loss to a tough Navarro squad, 14-6.

Seniors Brianna Young and Emma Broussard pose after final Hawk Game

It was Senior Night on this wet night for two Hawks giving fans a chance to say good-bye, yet looking at this lineup you also have a ton of youngsters.

Brianna Young and Emma Broussard both helped plug some key holes, but being a freshman or sophomore against older clubs just did not translate to victories in District 27-3A.

“Considering the conditions with rain, we did not give up,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We hit this pitcher a lot better this time and our players played their heart out for the seniors and everybody else.”

Navarro started with three runs to start this affair, giving CL a glimpse of what they would have to do to win this game.

Canyon Lake had scored more runs this season than any other Hawk team and this would be a game where scoring would be needed in mass.
