CL Hawks Sweep Bandera for First District Win

Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013

CL Hawks win first District 27-3A contest over Bandera last Tuesday night at Mountain Valley Middle School, 25-12, 25-17, 21-25, and 25-18.

This was a must win as CL had already had one loss to Navarro to start the season and a loss to Bandera would put the Hawks in a deep hole.

This district presently has four teams that rank in the Top 25 according to Texas Girls Coaches Association.

The Bulldogs from Bandera and Canyon Lake are the only two teams in district that have not made that lofty position which tells you the importance of this contest.

Canyon Lake Volleyball will be starting their District 27-3A season this Friday at Navarro.

The ReSporter has studied the games played by their district counterpoints up to this point to test how they might stack up as the season starts up.

“Our district is tough,” Head Coach Kim Paisley said. “One of the toughest in 3A, but I am fine with a challenge.”

One of the first items to note is how tough this district will be while studying their games and teams played.

Coach Paisley: “We have made improvements since August 5th. I feel some of us have come out of our shell and are ready to step it up.”

The ReSporter: What are some of the things you are still working on to get this team ready for district play?

Coach Paisley: “We have been working on our offense as far as attacks and getting comfortable doing those in a match. I have also been putting in game scenarios on the scoreboard and having them work on that mental aspect of “We are down by two and the score is 20-22 them…” Then they have to learn to battle back.”

Little Things Turn into a Big Loss to Burnet, 34-7

Saturday, September 21st, 2013

Canyon Lake could not hold the water back as the Bulldogs scored 27 unanswered points, losing 34-7 on a soggy Homecoming night at Hawk Field.

“We have to figure out how to cut out those little things,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We can’t overcome penalties and turnovers and we are lacking in getting big plays.”

These two former district foes from days gone by were still locked into an anyone can win contest well into the third quarter as Burnet just led 13-7 with three minutes left in that quarter.

Then the proverbial dam broke with a rush of passes as Burnet’s Quarterback Derek Kiser passed for 289 yards to finish off the Hawks.

Sometimes a team is just better than what is put out on the field and after this game, the Hawks can safely say this is the case.

CL Freshman Showing improvement in Loss to Burnet, 27-8

Canyon Lake Freshman still making strides while improving with each contest as Burnet came from behind to beat the Hawks, 27-8 last Thursday night at Hawk Stadium.

The Hawks scored their first touchdown of this season after Keith Hutson intercepted a pass on Burnet’s first drive of the game.

That interception and 20 yard return from Hutson set up Canyon Lake on Burnet’s 35 yard line.

Then Tyler Shipman took a hand off on the left side of the line for 32 yards and a first down on the 3 yard line. One play later Shipman got the call again for that first taste of scoring this year.

Hawks Take Out Devine in Volleyball, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013

Canyon Lake continues to make strides at District 27-3A play starts to close in.

On Tuesday night, CL Hawks beat Devine 25-20, 25-20, 25-23.

“I like that we closed them out in three games,” Head Coach Kim Paisley started. “We were prepared and we had excellent footwork in our transition game.”

All three games were tight as Canyon Lake could only get their lead to six points in the second game when they led, 22-16.

The Hawks went through this whole match without having one timeout called.

“We had close scores and I wanted them (CL) to work through it, especially in that third game when Devine went ahead by one.”

This Devine team had just recently beat Comfort and Blanco by 2-0 scores during a tournament in the San Antonio area.

Case in point are those same two schools had beaten your Hawks earlier this season.

Comfort score: 2-0 in the Wimberley Tournament, 25-15 and 25-13.

Blanco score: 3-0 at the Hawk Gym, 25-13, 25-21, 25-22.

Now this Hawk team whitewashed Devine as there were several players that could score points on this night.

Senior Amber Ramsey continues to become a force at the net as she finished with 16 kills and 3 blocks.

“It is better if we have more players that can score and we don’t have to depend on one hitter,” Ramsey said.

In that last contest, Devine had taken the lead, 23-22 and that was the time when you could see the Hawks finish.

“That is because we work in practices with a drill we call scenarios,” Ramsey drilled. “We set the score at 24-22 and then we know not to fall apart when we get into a game….mistakes are going to happen and we can limit those mistakes.”

Canyon Lake had 10 service errors in these three games but they were still able to get a sweep.

“Coach had us work on that (serving) and we run if we miss our serves,” Ramsey finished. “We are more motivated because we don’t want to run.”

Now Canyon Lake is working on a four game winning streak as they prepare to meet Lampasas this Friday night with a 6pm start before Canyon Lake’s football game with Burnet.

A young team that seems to be getting their game going and now a chance to see them in action.

Come out and see how the Hawks perform.

Four Game Winning Streak:

3. Llano 25-17, 25-18, 25-19.
4. Devine 25-20, 25-20, 25-23.

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity also came up with a win over Devine, 25-15, 21-25, 25-19.

The Hawks controlled the first game but by coming up short in their next game had CL needing to come back together and get a hold of the third and deciding game.

Kalli Cardenas and Sam York taking it easy after a tough 3 game victory over Devine JV.

Kalli Cardenas and Sam York taking it easy after a tough 3 game victory over Devine JV.

“They were playing scared and they were over thinking their passes and sets,” Head Junior Varsity Coach Leigh Ann Weaver said. “We needed to concentrate on join out and having fun and then when they make mistakes is when they start over thinking.”

That would account for the difference in those first two scores from game one to game two.

There are two freshman playing in this game that helped step up the intensity and eventual victory, Libero Sam York and Kalli Cardenas.

“We needed mental toughness,” Cardenas started. “I know you have to start with the pass and that can help us finish stronger.”

On what was happening after an easy go of it in that first game and if their was some added pressure going into the rubber game.

“I just kept my mind focused because I had a job to do, Cardenas surmised. “Communicating was what we did right in that first game and we just went back to that to win.”

Libero, York was also all over the place in this contest in helping to pull this game out.

“Passing and mental toughness is where I can help influence my teammates and that helps me do better,” York passed.

York was also asked what she was thinking going into that third game.

“Knowing what we did wrong in that second game and to not do it again…we also did a better job of covering our hitters.”

Canyon Lake has a couple of strong classes that are starting to make their mark in Volleyball and coming out to watch these young ladies could be a treat as you get ready for the football game this Friday.

Canyon Lake will be going against Lampasas this Friday at the Hawk Gym.

A Road Less Traveled as Hawks Lose eSpecially bad, 34-14

JJ Nance on Kick-off return in game with La Vernia

Special Teams was especially bad as Canyon Lake lost their way to La Vernia on Friday the 13th, 34-14.

Traveling this road is really not difficult, however this highway can be hard to maneuver as you trek for your destination.

La Vernia found a four lane highway to paydirt via their special team units and in particular Levi Andrews as he passed enough Hawks on both of his 75 yard returns by kickoff and punt returns.

That helped the Bears to a 19 point lead to start the game and they did not look in their rear view mirror the rest of the evening.

“We got to learn to put all three parts of our game together,” Head Coach Charley Drum opened. “Our special teams did not perform well tonight. We just have to get all three clicking and if when we learn that lesson then that should bode well as district approaches.”
