showdown.

That same improvement was also seen between the first and second half as CL had a different resolve when they took the field starting the third quarter.

“When we look back at the Hays game and how many freshman they had playing, I told the players that it does not matter how many the other team has, they can only play with 11 players the same as we have,” Head Freshman Coach John Barthels said. “We hit the hole quicker in the second half and that was one of our adjustments we made at halftime.”

The Hawks had the ball only once when they held The Bears with 2:10 left in the third quarter and then lost the ball on downs with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter.

Canyon Lake lost their second game of the year last week, but there were some very encouraging signs that this Hawk team might have had their light switch turned on based on how well the offense ran the ball.

Of the top 30 rushing games in Hawk history three of the runners in last week’s game made the list.

McGuire Johnson is in 10th place with his 199 yards rushing while Josh DeVries now resides at 25th after gaining 92 yards and Hayden Dubois made the cut at 30th position after 81 yards rushing in that Bulldog game.

Canyon Lake as you can deduce had their best rushing game in their history after running past the game with Sealy two years ago by 17 yards.

La Vernia Bears have also started their year by running the ball and will have several running backs that will get the Hawks attention.

Vince Gill, Colby Skelton, Jevante Anderson and Landon Richter will be active in their backfield.

Skelton is the Quarterback and so that will also give you some trouble by his ability to escape trouble when attempting a pass.

In La Vernia’s opening game, Skelton only completed five out of 19 passes, but of those five receptions the Bears averaged over 25 yards per catch.

So that percentage can be deceiving based on being able to capitalize in large quantities of yards after a catch.

The Hawks will have to continue their clamp down mode after last week’s game with Somerset, when CL was able to hold a prolific passer to 173 yards of passing.

Bad news is in the form of rushing defense where Canyon Lake did not do a good job of stopping the Somerset runners.

That one stat allowed those Bulldogs to run out the clock when the Hawks needed to have a stop in order to finish their comeback quest.

One strength in La Vernia’s arena is defensive back William Doege who had two interceptions in their first game. The good news is that if Canyon Lake can have another good game running then it really does not matter how many passes a player has intercepted based on the number of times the Hawks would throw that rock.

This game will be a good barometer for how your Hawks will proceed for this season. If this offense can keep a good game of running, then that confidence will certainly play to their advantage as this season matures.

Defense will be another barometer for the fans to be watchful for seeing how this team is proceeding.

With a good game on that side of the ball, your Hawks can be a confident team as district sunrise starts to see the light.

Volleyball: Hawks Sweep Llano

Canyon Lake beats the Orange Yellow Jackets.

Canyon Lake did not lose a game all night….let that sink in.

The Freshman team won 2-0, the JV team won 2-0, and the Varsity won 3-0.

Canyon Lake Freshman girls started with a tough first game but finished with a more consistent second game and ran away with that second game and the match, 25-23, 25-12.

Llano just had too many unforced errors in that second game and Canyon Lake made sure that the Orange-Yellow Jackets would not get back in the game.

Michael Russell was taken from us last Thursday and Canyon Lake lost a student that I enjoyed covering in his first two years of high school in basketball and track for The ReSporter.

Russell was on the JV basketball team last year and was looking forward to a chance of playing varsity this season.

He was a long range sharp shooter and had a certain tenacity when on the hardwood.

Hawks Are Reborn in Loss to Somerset, 47-35

Saturday, September 7th, 2013

Canyon Lake had an opposite word game. What happened last week was just the opposite in this game with Somerset.

There is an old adage that a team will improve the most between the first and second game and the Hawks had already scored more points than the Blanco game on their first drive.

“We had a good offensive line tonight,” Head Coach Charles Drum started. “Our offense was totally different than the way we played last week. I’m proud of our offensive line.”

McGuire Johnson was the workhorse on this night as he rumbled for two touchdowns in the first half and helped Canyon Lake regain a lead going into a delay of game stoppage as thunderstorms and lightning threatened the area.

The ReSporter: You accumulated a lot of points and wanted to know if that was more

Coach Mary Beth Gallagher

Coach Mary Beth Gallagher

based on your competition, how did our team do compared to other schools your size?

Coach Mary Beth Gallagher: “Well there were not very many schools with our size at this meet. We finished in the middle of the pack on boys varsity and the girls, well about the same as always, the bottom 1/3.”

The ReSporter: Was there someone that had a break out run?

Coach Mary Beth Gallagher: “I will tell you each kid improved their times from the trial times two mile a week earlier and that is what we hope to do each week.”

Coach Paisley: “The San Marcos tournament was excellent, especially for the last tournament. We definitely played stronger teams. We also have had the chance to watch some film and see ourselves in action. We are focusing on certain areas of our game and fixing it up.”

The ReSporter: The ReSporter noticed on the stat line that Regan Mickey seems to be getting more involved, is she above the curve or about where you thought she would be at this time?

JV Hawks Can’t Hold Lead to Bulldogs, Lose 16-14

Friday, September 6th, 2013

It was a game that a fourth quarter comeback led to a victory…the only difference on this Thursday

Anthony Wagner, Jakob Merritt, and Matt Adams after tough loss to Somerset JV

Anthony Wagner, Jakob Merritt, and Matt Adams after tough loss to Somerset JV

night for the Canyon Lake JV team was being on the wrong end of that score, losing 16-14 to Somerset.

Last week, the Hawks responded with 19 points in a 4th quarter blitz over Blanco giving a nice ride home with three point win.

This time it was Somerset winning a game in that same stanza by scoring 14 unanswered points in a game your Hawks let fly away.

That flight was an 81 yard pass play with just one minute left on the clock that spelled Canyon Lake.

“We started great,” JV Coach Brian Owens stated. “This is something every JV team has to experience and they will need to learn from this lesson.”

“They (Hawks) did everything we asked and we just have to have toughness and intensity that will last till the end of the game…we hit a plateau during the middle of the game and we never regained our momentum.”
