Lady Hawks JV Take Bulldogs for a Walk in Win, 41-35

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013

The Lady Hawks had a conversation at halftime which was much needed considering having only four shots in the second quarter and a lofty 15 turnovers.

Canyon Lake could not get a shot off with all the miscues and needed a break from the action so they could recoup what they found in their first quarter when they has 23 shots and seven offensive rebounds.

When the third quarter started, CL not only got more shots off but also shot the ball better in helping to regain their lead, 32-24 going into that last stanza.

Five assists in coming out of the locker room also showed how communication and offense stepped it up.

There is an unwritten rule that a player must call back board when shooting. Jenna Lann was in that category when she banked in a three point shot starting the fourth quarter which gave CL their first double digit lead of the night, 37-26.

“They (Bandera) have a good team this year and after halftime we knew what we needed to do,” Lann said reflectively. “We corrected our mistakes and got our spacing and changed our press break on the inbound pass.”

Good maneuvers for Canyon Lake since these girls needed a change to get back into the game.

“Better passes,” Rachel Best said it best. “We got more intensity and stopped reaching (for the ball) and started moving our feet.”

Canyon Lake got good production from several players.

Lady Hawks Win First District Game over Bandera, 34-29

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

Canyon Lake gets their first District 27-3A win over Bandera at the Hawk Gym on Tuesday.

The Lady Hawks had nine points within the first three minutes of the opening tip-off and a seven point lead, 9-2.

After that offensive spurt your Hawks went over 10 minutes before they had another basket in this game.

In that same time span, Bandera had forged an eight point lead, 19-11 with less than three minutes before halftime. One basket in 16 shots in that span for CL was not a good way for a team to make a statement.

Canyon Lake trailed until the fourth quarter when Amber Ramsey had a three point play the old fashion way. A made shot with a free throw that helped the Hawks to a 31-28 lead.

Bandera could not get a good offensive play with Canyon Lake controlling with a suffocating defense.

Kyndall Drum then scored with two minutes to play giving CL a four point lead and with hindsight the game.

Ramsey had a good stat line in that pivotal fourth quarter with two assists, three steals, four rebounds and that all important three point lead changer.

The Hawks took control with three towers up from two when Drum entered the game, “Coach puts that lineup in when she wants rebounds,” Ramsey said. “When the three of us are in the game it is hard to out rebound us.”

Hawk Freshman Speed for a Win, 53-36

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

The Freshman Team was late, but all that proved was sometimes warming up might make you cold as Canyon Lake Freshman win 53-36.

Traffic was the culprit, but as these Hawks will attest it made no difference.

“Not warming up prior to this game may have helped the cause as we were able to put 21 points in the first period,” Coach John Barthels started. “Our defense stepped up another notch as we forced multiple turnovers that led to quick baskets.”

That might be the ticket for Canyon Lake for future games, keep the team on the bus as long as you can and then unleash that energy for a good lead and eventual victory.

The Hawks held Gonzales to only 13 points the second half as CL increased their lead to an eventual 17 point relaxing win.

“We are getting better at attacking the basket and moving the ball around that creates open shots,” Coach Barthels closed.

Hayden Lee finished with 21 points leading the pent-up Hawks with Brandon Ward also scoring in double figures with 10 points.

The ride home was much more relaxing for Canyon Lake as they prepare for Wimberley this coming Friday night.

A win could be had with a large crowd that gets the parking lot full causing players to arrive late and ready to take care of their next opponent.

Hawks Snarled in Traffic in Loss to Gonzales, 49-46

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

Canyon Lake had a late start to their game with Gonzales but the Hawks still could not get out of traffic in time to pull out a win, losing 46-49.

The CL Freshman got delayed in traffic on their route to Gonzales that delayed all of the contests for this evening of action.

Canyon Lake did have some good things come out of this contest, but that most important item was still stuck in traffic, losing, as the Hawks are now mired in a six game losing streak.

Under 10 turnovers and a much better shooting percentage were all good signs but it only took one category that snarled traffic up for the delays…Free Throw Shooting was that flat tire.

The Hawks had been shooting much better in that facet, in fact in their last two games, CL was shooting 70% from the line.

“We just couldn’t get a stop when we needed it,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “There is a lot more hope after our game than there was after Friday’s game but free throws hurt us again.”

Paul Davis had a tying three point field goal with 40 seconds left in the game but then also committed a foul with 16 seconds while Gonzales was waiting for a last shot.

Gonzales was also abysmal from the charity stripe up until that foul and this Apache player sank both free throws to give them the lead and game.

Davis was fouled on CL’s last offensive set, but missed his first shot which forced Davis to miss the second with a chance for rebound and another shot.

To no avail as the Hawks had to foul again that resulted in your final score.

Other notables was Andrew Riali with 12 points on 50% shooting while Doug Hubnik continues to have a record year in the assist department totaling seven in this contest giving him 92 for the season.

Canyon Lake’s next game will be the start of District 27-3A, when Wimberley visits the Hawk Gym this Friday night.

Lady Hawks Lose First District Game, 42-34

Saturday, January 5th, 2013

Lady Hawks started their District 27-3A season with a loss to Fredericksburg last Friday and now will look on how to hone in on their game strengths this Tuesday as they face Bandera at home.

Canyon Lake started this game by scoring just three points in that first quarter which put the Hawks in comeback mode for the remainder of their contest.

“We struggled on offense,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “They had heavy pressure on our guards and we could never get into any rhythm.”

No Hawk player was able to make double figures in scoring as they could only muster 12 points as a team in the first half.

“We played a very physical game but came up short,” Coach Gallagher continued. “We didn’t give up, both teams were in foul trouble very early.”

Turnovers were the downfall for Canyon Lake as this has been one their most glaring weaknesses this season.

“We will be back to work on Monday morning to address our issue of taking care of the ball. We will tweak our press break and our offense to free up our ball handlers.”

Time will have to be well spent as CL looks to get back on track in their game with Bandera next week.

Hawk Freshman Keep up Pressure in Win over Blanco, 44-15

Saturday, January 5th, 2013

Hawk Freshman almost pitch a shut-out in win over Blanco, Friday January 4 in the Blanco gym.

What doldrums the Hawks had suffered in their last couple of outings was not in attendance in this contest as Canyon Lake jumped out to a 14 point first quarter while pitching a No-No in that quarter.

“We jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back,” Coach John Barthels commented. “After a couple of disappointing losses we decided to not get fancy and go back to what works best for our team, pressure.”

Wow, Coach Bartels can make adjustments sound so easy.

“We caused turnovers that led to easy baskets for our team,” Coach Barthels closed.

Hayden Lee finished with 10 points leading the team in scoring. The Hawks had nine players that scored in the contest while staying focused in a 29 point whitewash.

“We got a lot of of good rebounds and our defense turned into our offense,” Forward Hayden Lee said. “This type of game gives us a good feeling as we go into our next game….this was a nice relief. It also helped to make our threes and that helped open things up.”

Hawks next test will come against Gonzales this coming Monday as they try to keep that good feeling to continue throughout the rest of their season.

Based on Coach Barthels, all this team needs to do is keep up the pressure.

Hawks JV End Drought in Win over Blanco, 40-27

Saturday, January 5th, 2013

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity outscored Blanco, 24-4 in the second half to complete a comeback and put the finishing touches to the Panthers, 40-27.

In the first half, CL only had two players that scored while shooting 28 percent and twice had a 10 point deficit. The last time was 23-13 score with just over a minute left in the first half.

Blanco scored quickly to start the second half, but that was their last basket for this evening as the other two points scored by this Panther team was from their free throw line.

The drought that had hampered this Hawk team for the past few games seemed to still be lingering in starting this contest on this rainy and dreary evening.

The Hawks then woke up and scored 27 points while holding Blanco to four the last 16 minutes of this contest.

Trendon Martinez and Tommy Clark were the only players that scored in the first half combining for 16 points.

Austin Acosta and Skyler Tschoepe had 4 and 5 assists respectfully helping in giving players easy shots and confidence as this game progressed.

Friday, January 4th, 2013

Canyon Lake continues their cold front as the Blanco Panthers go on a 20-0 run from the second to third quarter and coast to a win, 45-32.

The Hawks are searching for answers as their shots have gone cold for their last five games all losses.

“The way we finished was certainly a positive,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman opened. “We continued to compete.”

Confidence is not overflowing and the Hawks do have some impressive wins on their resume, they just need to revive those games and get back on that saddle.

Next game is this coming Monday at Gonzales and then District 27-3A starts the following Friday when Wimberley will visit.

Hawks Looking for Long Johns before next Contest

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013

Canyon Lake continues their cold streak that started at the end of their semester as the Lampasas Badgers make SnowHawks in, 63-29 win.

What was once a three game cushion (9-6) has now become a one game deficit (9-10) as this Hawk team will try to stop their skid this coming Friday when CL tips off against Blanco at Blanco High School.

It took four minutes before CL could sink a basket and the Hawks did not even get a shot off in the first three minutes of this contest.

If this would of been a Ski Slalom event, then not only was Canyon Lake playing in shorts (Cold…burrrr), but also going down the hill very fast. (Black Slope fast)

It took a Spencer Wellings three point bank shot as the first half horn sounded before your Hawks would break into double figures.

“We haven’t played a game in a week and a half,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “I used the whole bench trying to get our kids enough reps.”

Lampasas was a very athletic team that had played four games in a tournament after Christmas, but excuses will not lower the hurdle that is next on Canyon Lake’s schedule as District 27-3A looms in the very near future.

Layer your clothes when you ski and wear some long johns in this next game and hopefully this contest will start out much warmer with a better outcome.
