Pre/Game: Bandera (2-4) @ CL Hawks (2-4)

Sunday, October 14th, 2012
History: Canyon Lake lead series with Bandera, 2-0.
 2010 Hawks 35 Bandera 06
 2011 Hawks 55 Bandera 33
This Season's Scores:
 Hawks 26 Blanco 21 Bandera 13 George West 27
 Hawks 35 Somerset 54 Bandera 25 Devine 60
 Hawks 13 La Vernia 14 Bandera 26 Llano 39
 Hawks 31 Burnet 37 Bandera 39 Comfort 21
Hawks 09 La Grange 34 Bandera 34 La Vernia 14
 Hawks 27 Billies 17 Bandera 06 Wimberley 40

Bandera comes into this week’s game without one of their best offensive players.

Quarterback Michael Miller was lost for the year in their win over La Vernia two weeks ago.

Miller was a do everything type of player for this Bulldog team. He might remind Hawk fans of that quarterback (name withheld by Doctors orders) for Boerne last year that became a nightmare for all those sleepless nights as fans waited for this season to start.

Miller still leads District 27-3A in rushing after missing his first game last week against Wimberley. His 735 yards rushing will be hard to replace to say the least.

In fact, Miller accounted for 53% of the Bulldogs offense until his injury.

Canyon Lake Penalizes the Billies, 27-17

Canyon Lake’s bend but don’t break defense was up to the task as Fredericksburg could not throw enough at this Hawk team to win.

CL might have learned some valuable lessons from pre/district as they held on for a, 27-17 victory last Friday night at Fredericksburg.

“I’m proud of the kids and they bought into what we wanted done,” Head Coach Charlie Drum said. “One round at a time and we closed out a team after they (Fredericksburg) had tied it.”

“We changed how we practice and our scout team really prepared our starters in the last two weeks…he (Branson Belcher) made big plays and managed the ball well,” Coach Drum responded on questions about the team and how QB Belcher performed on this night.

On the Hawks third possession and third play of their drive, it would become the Doug Hubnik show.

Quarterback Belcher heaved the ball down the sideline to a streaking Hubnik in stride for a 56 yard pass play. Hubnik might have left some burn marks on the grass as he put on his afterburners, leaving the Billies defensive back grabbing air.

Mountain Valley 8th Grade Blanks Billies, 0-0 and 14-0

Friday, October 12th, 2012

Mountain Valley Eighth Grade ‘B’ squad did not get the better draw when thinking about start time for this game.

Rain was the winner when a downpour was going on through much to this contest.

Both teams could not muster 50 yards of offense as just holding onto the ball should of been worth extra points.

Mountain Valley started things off well when they took their first possession to the Billies four yard line. But this young club could not capitalize and gave the ball up on downs.

On this drive Andrew Neel to Mason Blackburn 32 yard pass play would be the biggest play and over half of the total offense for the game.

The play set the Hawks up deep in Fredericksburg territory, but the rains became the focus point as they continued negating a grand opportunity to score.

Canyon Lake JV Beat Billies, 21-14

Friday, October 12th, 2012

Fredericksburgs Junior Varsity had a perfect play call right off the bat, when on the kick-off, Canyon Lake thought they had the returner with a short return….then a pass laterally to Sammy Studebaker was set up with a wall of blockers.

Result? Seventeen seconds into the game and the Billies had a 7-0 lead and looking at a stunned Hawk team across the field.

All was not lost, however, as this Hawk team proceeded to march 75 yards in 11 plays tying the game with a touchdown.

Seven minutes was worked off the clock and so for comparison sakes:
Fredericksburg had the ball for 17 seconds and a score.
Canyon Lake had the ball for 6:14 seconds and a score.

The Junior Varsity had 30 yards through the air and 40 yards on the ground for their first drive.

Canyon Lake had another chance for a quick score, but an interception stopped a scoring opportunity.

On their first drive, Fredericksburg had three of four plays that gained 36 yards in the opposite direction. Errant snaps were the culprit on two of those plays and one was on a punt.

Freshman Volleyball where DeFeats will soon be Feats!

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Canyon Lake’s Freshman Volleyball team is better than their record.

Freshman Cameron Berger and Sydney Riebschlaeger

Most 3A schools will have three teams in many of their sports.

The Junior Varsity, Varsity, and Freshman teams will be formed as each team prepares for their season. When this happens you will have most varsity teams acquiring all of the best players for that particular team.

So a Varsity team will have predominately Seniors and then a good number of Juniors. The football team will many times have two to three Sophomores that make a varsity team.

This year CL’s Volleyball Varsity team has added a Freshman (Halley McKnight) to their roster which is a rare feat.

Junior Varsity will many times have Juniors, Sophomores, and a Freshman will have their best chance to move into this role.

You will always have a Freshman team being just freshman. They will never have the luxury of adding any other grades to that team.

CL Volleyball Lose to Texans, Backs against the Wall for Playoffs

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Canyon Lake backs are against the wall now as this Hawks team will need to win their next two games to have an outside chance of making the playoffs this season.

The loss to front runner Wimberley now leaves Canyon Lake with a must win over second and third place, Fredericksburg and Boerne respectfully.

CL has shown they can compete and win against Bandera and Navarro. Navarro game was lost in the fifth game of the match in their last outing on the road last week.

Moral victories are just that, but this Hawk team did compete at a much higher degree that wasn’t there last time these two teams met over two weeks ago.

Pre/Game: CL Hawks (1-4) @ Fredericksburg (4-1)

Monday, October 8th, 2012
Series History: Hawks lead 3-1
 2008 Hawks 14 Billies 65
 2009 Hawks 14 Billies 07
 2010 Hawks 35 Billies 20
 2011 Hawks 35 Billies 07
This Season's Results:
 Hawks 26 Blanco 21 Billies 21 Burnet 26
 Hawks 35 Somerset 54 Billies 45 SA Memorial 14
 Hawks 13 La Vernia 14 Billies 44 Brady 00
 Hawks 31 Burnet 37 Billies 22 Lampasas 19
 Hawks 09 La Grange 34 Billies 14 Llano 06

A lot has changed in the past year in the football world. Fredericksburg only needs one more win to match their win total the past three years. Night and Day could be another way of putting the difference between the past and now for the Billies.

Meanwhile, Canyon Lake has, ‘fallen and can’t get up’, so far this season.

Take a few game moments away and this Hawk team could also be 4-1 instead of 1-4. La Grange was the first team that did anything they wanted in their game with CL.

There was a chance that the Hawks could of easily been held scoreless in that game and the defense was abused by La Grange.

Canyon Lake has proven that they don’t like water.
