CL Game was Hapless, Season not Hopeless, Lose 37-31

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

Fullback Matt Riffe running after Catch

Canyon Lake let their guard down in the fourth quarter and Burnet took advantage with 20 unanswered points winning with 28 seconds on the clock, 37-31 for a Homecoming crowd in Burnet last Friday night.

The Hawks won the middle two quarters 31-3, but could not find any momentum to start or end this game.

Burnet started the game with a 17 play 82 yard drive for a 7-0 lead right out of the doghouse.

CL could not match the intensity and had a three play and punt on their first series. How about 27 yards of first quarter offense, and only 2:54 of time with the ball.

Hopeful Tidbit: Punter Branson Belcher had five punts for 44.6 yards in the game. Eric Nelson still holds the game record with a 51 average against Ingram in 2009. Belcher’s average for the season is in line for a Canyon Lake best with 40 yards on 12 punts. A punter has the potential to change field position which can help win close games.

The Bulldogs were at it again on their second possession traveling 63 yards on eight plays while mixing up runs and passes, which kept Canyon Lake on their heels.

Canyon Lake’s rushing offense was not at their best on this night averaging less than four yards per carry. However, the passing game would unleash some potent ammo by accumulating 300 yards on the night.

The Hawks had just three players catching a pass in the first three games. Belcher would double that number in spreading the wealth around.

Hawks JV come up Short in Loss to Burnet JV, 21-14

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Burnet Bulldogs JV came out on fire but the only thing missing for this Bulldog team was a Hydrant.

Yes, the final score was in Burnet’s corner, however this JV team for Canyon Lake was without several players due to being moved up to Varsity and this Hawk team also had sick and injured players that helped deplete this team.

No excuses, because by looking at this game you had to come away impressed with what was shown in the trenches for this Hawk team.

The Burnet JV offense came out with three first downs and in their first four plays and you could see that this Bulldog team might of been playing the Hawks, but all they could see were cats.

This is when this Hawk team started stemming the tide and started showing a whole new approach to this game.

“We adjusted our defensive line,” Defensive Coach Brian Hooper started. “So we started slanting to the strong side or to the side they were running.”

“We were hit in the mouth to start this game, but we came out with a defensive line that gave them (Bulldog offense) to big of a gap,” Hooper closed. “They (Hawk defense) responded well.”

One third of Burnet’s rushing yardage was during those first two drives and Canyon Lake responded by shutting that hydrant off.

Coaches Corner: The Drum Beat

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

ReSporter: Coach Drum, what are your goals as you face a

Head Coach Charley Drum

more wide open offense in Burnet this week?

Coach Drum: “We need to defend the run and pass equally well and play a complete game. Burnet will be a more open offense and so we will need to tackle in space and also being able to open field tackle will be huge.”

ReSporter: What would you consider a good outcome to this Friday’s game?

Coach Drum: “Playing fundamentally sound football in all three phases of the game, offensively, defensively and special teams. Our biggest would be to finish someone off with our offense.
For the defense, we need to stress in making that last stop, especially when the game depends on it.”

ReSporter: Yes, that last drive was important for the outcome being in our favor. Do defenses really get tired before an offense during a game?

Coach Drum: “It depends on what type of a game your playing…if you are playing a no huddle offense or if the offense is subbing more to get different packages.
We need the defense to know that they not only need to focus but that we need twice the focus when the outcome is being decided.”

The Hawks played Burnet two years while in the same district when this program was just starting and took a beating for two games during that span.

CL got revenge the next year when the Hawks faced a Bulldog team in their first round of playoffs. This game was a first half blow out as Canyon Lake opened a safe lead and held on for a victory winning 27-20.

Volleyball Coaches Corner with Nicole Creek

Canyon Lake Volleyball is fresh off losing to Devine on Tuesday night in a

Head Volleyball Coach Nicole Creek

four game match. 25-20, 25-27, 19-25, 18-25

ReSporter: We thought this match with Devine would be a very winnable game, what happened?

Coach Creek: “It should of been a very winnable game, much like Llano was, but we are just making two many unforced errors in the game and we are taking to long to get started. We seem to always be playing catch up when we start the games four of five points down.”

ReSporter: Is there a difference in the ways this team plays at home versus at another venue?

CL Volleyball District 27-3A Rundown

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

Canyon Lake’s Volleyball team will start playing for keeps this Friday at the Hawk gym, when Wimberley comes to town to start District 27-3A competition.

This year looks like a District that will be tough for every game. Literally there are not any weak links or gimme games to be had.

How can you come to this conclusion? Not one team has a losing record coming into the season openers. Each team has played over 20 games up to this point and there are a lot of comparisons you can run to see how the teams will stack up against each other.

Canyon Lake can certainly have a say in this season’s final placing in district and this team looks like a better team than last year’s club. This could be a season where the bottom three in district could of made the playoffs last season.

The ReSporter would like to give you an idea of each school and an idea of what might be in store for this round robin of games.

Canyon Lake JV Football Grounds La Vernia, Wins 13-6

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Story by Coach Lucas Chapman

The Junior Varsity Hawks survived a late charge by the La Vernia Bears Thursday night in La Vernia to win 13-6. The victory moved the Hawks to 3-0 on the season.

After a 0-0 game at the half, Sophomore Skyler Tschoepe put the Hawks on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run on a quarterback sneak with Jared Bruckman adding the PAT. In the fourth quarter, Tschoepe was at it again, connecting on a 5 yard touchdown strike to Wide Receiver Shane Relkin. The score put the Hawks up 13-0 late in the game.

Down two scorea, La Vernia went to the air and scored on a 20 yard pass with just over 30 seconds to play, Tommy Clark stripped the ball after a short completion, and Cody Powell recovered the fumble to seal the victory.

The Canyon Lake defense was stifling all night long, forcing the Bears to go to the air after stuffing the run for most of the game. When the Bears dropped back to pass, the secondary stepped up with several pass break ups and sure tackling in the open field.

The Hawks return home this week to play the Burnet Bulldogs.

 Game Summary 1 2 3 4 Final
 CL Hawks 0 0 7 6 13
 La Vernia Bears 0 0 0 6 6
 Scoring:
CLJV-Skyler Tschoepe 1 yard run (Jared Bruckman kick), 3rd
CLJV-Shane Relkin 5 yard pass from Tschoepe (pat failed), 4th

Volleyball: Canyon Lake take care of Bulldogs in Varsity and JV action

Saturday, September 15th, 2012

Canyon Lake Volleyball team won a game they were suppose to win when they swept Burnet Bulldogs at the Hawk gym last Friday night, 25-13, 25-23, 25-21.

“A three game win is better than a five game loss,” Head Coach Nicole Creek stated. “We worked on our defense a lot this past week and it was better overall match.”

Coach Creek was expounding on how many unforced errors Canyon Lake endured in their five game loss to Llano earlier in the week.

Junior Amber Ramsey continues her impressive play at the net with 20 kills against Burnet.

Senior Marisa Ellis presence was also seen with 18 assists, 4 blocks, and 13 digs as this group of girls ready themselves for a gauntlet schedule when District 27-3A starts against Wimberley next Friday night at the Hawks gym.

“We got some momentum as we ready ourselves for next week,” Coach Creek said.
