CLJV Boy’s Basketball Win again Beat Blanco, 46-39

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

The score was much closer than what the final indicated, but the Hawks were in control for the game and beat a hapless Blanco by seven points.

Canyon Lake shot 41% from the floor the first three quarters, leaving Blanco with a furious comeback to make the game seem closer.

Six turnovers for the first half also helped the JV to secure another win.

Caleb Kreiger led the Hawks with 17 points while cleaning the glass with 14 rebounds. Kreiger almost had a double double in the first half.

Kreiger was helped with 11 points from Chandler Faulkner and seven points from Robbie Ferris.

Isaac Mendez helped with seven rebounds while dishing out two assists.

Everyone contributed in the game as Erik Ibarra was heard saying going to the bench, ‘I scored my first points of the year.’

“We had a lot of energy from this past week,” Ibarra interjected. “Crashing the boards and blocking out has helped with a good winning streak.”

The Hawks were up by 16 points in the second half while Coach Chapman allowed all the players to apply pressure on Blanco throughout the game.

The game was coached by Chapman as Coach David Bentzen had to leave early for his Christmas vacation.

When asked which Coach was the better tactician, the players were almost all in agreement and The ReSporter will leave the answer for the Coaches to deduce.

Merry Christmas!!

Canyon Lake Blanks Blanco, 42-35

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

The Canyon Lake Hawk’s (9-5) defense continued to shine as they continue to keep teams scoring in the 30’s. The result was a seven point win against the Blanco Panthers, 42-35 in a game played Monday night in Blanco.

The Hawks were also without their starting point guard, Doug Hubnik and reserve Paul Davis, which left Coach Jeff Maynard doing some shuffling with the lineup finding the best match-up against the Panthers.

“That is what we got to do, with (Doug) Hubnik sick and (Paul) Davis out of the country,” Head Coach Maynard said. “We knew this was going to be a battle and they (Blanco) get up to play us. It is another notch in their belt with them.”

Canyon Lake started the game like they had just left school for the holidays as their one for eight shooting left them with a balmy three points after the first quarter.

The Canyon Lake Hawks swept the Gonzales Indians with all three boy’s teams

from Freshman to Varsity this past Friday as the School gets geared up for their Christmas holidays.

Varsity won 39-30, Junior Varsity won 38-20, and the Freshman doubled up the Indians 43-21 and all three were under control from the second quarter on.

Freshman will be first on our trek of recaps.

Canyon Lake Freshman 43 Gonzales 21

Gonzales came out smoking and led after the first quarter, 12-9 over the Hawks after starting with a little over 30% shooting from the court.

Fans did not know that the 12 points scored by our visitors would not be matched for the next three quarters as Canyon Lake (8-2) held the Indians to nine points the rest of the way.

“Our energy level was not where it needed to be,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman surmised. “We had a different defense and by pressuring the ball we got back into the game.”

Canyon Lake outscored Gonzales 25 to 3 for the middle quarters as starters and bench players had little difference in their skill set as wave after wave of Hawks kept the Indians hiding in their TeePees.

“We started focusing and finishing our shots and playing better defense,” Guard Tommy Clark said. “A couple of times we were crowding the three point line, but we started passing the ball a lot and that helped.”

Garrett Winters was perfect from the field as he connected on all his shots from the field and free throw line for a 12 point night.

Hawks JV Boys Beat Comfort, 37-20

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Canyon Lake improved to 7-3 on the year as they subdued the Comfort Bobcats, 37-20 at the Comfort gym last Tuesday night.

The Hawks took a little longer to get going as they led by just six points at halftime, 17-11. The good news was Comfort’s shots were colder than Canyon Lake’s on this warmer than usual December night.

“We played great defensively,” Head JV Coach David Bentzen said. “We ran our offense great and had great shots, we just have to start making them.”

The 33 percent shooting had to be a hard thing to watch from the bench for Coach Bentzen, but there were a few players that had a decent game.

Canyon Lake Boys Win is Comfort(able), 49-17

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Canyon Lake Boys Basketball improved their record to 7-5 after dominating Comfort, 49-17 last Tuesday night in Comfort.

The win matched the total number of wins Canyon Lake had last season and this before district games starting up.

The Hawks were in control for the entire game as the defense clamped down so hard on Comfort that it became unCOMFORTable for the home team.

“I thought we played really well tonight,” Head Coach Jeff Maynard said. “It was nice to see the boys rebound from a tough loss on Saturday and execute defensively like we did. When you hold any team to three points in a half, that is great defensive effort.”

Brandon Berger was high point with 12 while Matt Noyola made two three pointers and finished with eight points.

Canyon Lake had not been converting their free throws for the last few games and on this night made eight from the charity stripe at a 73% rate.

CL Boy’s can’t Sink a Ship, Lose 58-21 to Billies

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

You need water to sink a ship and Canyon Lake found themselves in a major drought for four quarters losing to Fredericksburg Billies, 57-21 in a game being played for third place at this year’s Second Annual Canyon Lake Basketball Tournament.

Not counting free throws, the Hawks sank a total of five total shots for the game with droughts that had only one field goal for the whole second half.

The game did not start like it ended, when CL  made three of their first four shots that tied the score at six a piece. Canyon Lake held a short lead on a free throw, 7-6 and then the drought started and dried all the shots up.

Canyon Lake did not score for the next nine minutes as the Billies enjoyed a 22 point run.

It took another 15 minutes before the Hawks sank another shot that was not a free throw.

The third quarter points were all free throws and Fredericksburg acted like they were playing on their home court.

The good news is the rain started falling four hours after the game giving hope that their will be better days ahead.

Canyon Lake’s next game will be at Comfort this coming Tuesday and next home game next Friday against Gonzales with an early start, 5:30pm.

The ReSporter is thinking we need to go clear out our rain gutters for the deluge.

Canyon Lake missed a tying shot as time was running out and lost to the Burnet Bulldogs, 43-40 on Friday night at the Hawk Gym.

The Canyon Lake Tournament has now finished the second day and both the girl and boy teams will be playing mid-day Saturday for third place.

Take the second quarter shooting off the game and Canyon Lake would be playing for the Championship.

One thing will ring true for the Hawks, very few teams can score more than 50 points which will always give Canyon Lake a chance for a win.

With one minute left in the game, Burnet had just increased their lead to five points which was also their largest lead for the night, 40-35.

Ancel Morel and Matt Magness both sank two free throws in the next 30 seconds getting the Hawks within one point and a chance to play for a championship.

overcome 31 turnovers against the Lockhart press last Tuesday night at the Hawk Gym.

The first two quarters had the Hawks within four points after committing 17 turnovers, but when the shots cooled off the lead got out of hand as the Lions raced to the 23 point win.

“We have to take care of the ball,” Freshman Head Coach Lucas Chapman said with resolve.

Skylar Tschoepe could not block enough shots to help defray the multiple turnovers, Tschoepe finished with five blocks in the contest.
