The Hawks JV team came out of the huddle after the third quarter and proceeded to score more points in that one quarter than had been scored in the previous three.

Lockhart Lions could only get dizzy watching Canyon Lake burn the nets as the Hawks stretched their one point deficit to a 11 point blistering, 57-46.

“We locked in defensively and kept them in front of us,” Head JV Coach David Bentzen said. “Pushing the ball in the paint and the kids got comfortable and then we were able to break their press.”

Several Hawks took the ball and crafted the win.

Caleb Kreiger contributed with 17 points and eight rebounds allowing the Hawks to keep close until their Tazzmania Double decided to take the game over.

The Canyon Lake Hawks (5-3), continued their stingy defense holding Lockhart Lions to 43 points and a wild win Tuesday night at the Hawk Gym.

“This was a good win,” Head Coach Jeff Maynard said. “Lockhart is a lot better than their record shows.”

Brandon Berger was nails as he sank four free throws giving CL the lead, 45-43 and the Hawks lock-downed on Lockhart with a 15 point run to finish the game against the 4A squad.

Canyon Lake also held the Lions scoreless in the second quarter allowing a one point deficit to balloon to a 12 point lead at halftime, 28-16.

The Lions led by Westbrook and Kerr, started the second half cutting the lead to seven points starting the fourth quarter, 34-27.

Canyon Lake Prepares for Lockhart and CL Tourney

Canyon Lake might be onto something this season as the

comparisons to previous years will start with each passing game.

The Hawks have four wins and three losses and this is the first time Canyon Lake has had a winning record after seven games.

Another positive you can deduce is the defense allowing 41 points a game which will translate to wins, especially considering how poor the shooting has been up to this point for Canyon Lake’s offense.

The Marion Tournament had a third place finish, with a very winnable game against the host with a few missed free throws which cost the Hawks a chance to come away a winner.

Both Matt Magness and Brandon Berger teamed up for the All-Tournament Award.

This Tuesday, Canyon Lake will play Lockhart at the Hawk Gym and prepare for the Second Annual Hawk Basketball Tournament this weekend.

The game was ‘The Bigs’ against a ‘Scrappy’ Hawk team, taking the Bulldogs to the end of their leash before made free throws gave Marion the separation and the win.

Canyon Lake started the second stanza with a four point deficit but within minutes had 10 unanswered points and a lead they held into the halftime locker room.

“They (Marion) were giving us the mid range game and we were going to either pull up or dish to the post,” Coach Maynard strategized. “We did a good job of adjusting.”

more importantly in the fourth quarter as they raced to a resounding 14 point victory, 42-28 over Llano Yellowjackets on Tuesday night.

The game was a defensive and poor shooting affair as both teams averaged just 11 points in the first two stanzas against a former District foe.

New transfer, Caleb Kreiger was the main force in the Hawks getting the separation for the comfortable victory.

“We have good chemistry and I’m getting to know my teammates,” Kreiger admonished. “We’re getting better the more I watch and start to play my game.” (more…)

Senior Matt Magness was almost half the scoring for the Hawks scoring 20 points by driving to the basket with a great tear-drop shot.

“It’s a good shot when you are playing against a tall guys on the floor,” Magness stated.

Canyon Lake also knows that their goals are still in place as they beat a team that has played two other district teams with the same result.

The game was well in control when the second half started to warm up. After scoring five points in the second quarter the Hawks took control in the third quarter extending the lead to 11 points at the end of that stanza. (more…)

Coaches Corner: Canyon Lake’s Matt Monzingo

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Time with Head Coach Matt Monzingo morphed to looking into the future of the football program.

The Hawks have just finished an 8-2 record while beating some very good teams in the process.

The Sealy game comes to mind as Canyon Lake had one of its most important statement games in the short history for this program.

“We (CL) will reevaluate everything we are doing,” Coach Monzingo started. “From pre-game to halftime we will go over all of it.”

Talking about the players coming back, Coach Monzingo said, “We will have to move some guys around while we evaluate our depth.”

Canyon Lake is losing several players on both sides of the line that had put in considerable minutes.
