A Weekly Article by First Year Official Johnny Ivie

Fresh Grass

Ropes Texas, home to the fighting Eagles, who at the time were number 22 in the state in six man football, and it also was the starting site of a true adventure in sports. The cast of characters; 40 new recruits to Texas High School Football’s TASO group, the West Texas Chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials’. Among them was a former star on the grid-iron, at least in his own mind….Me! I had always wanted to officiate football, even when I was playing. It seemed I always had a different opinion of what the “REF’s” were calling in most games I played or participated in. So, I went ahead and took the challenge of becoming a new official. Little did I know the direction it would take me and how enjoyable it would be.

Josh and Jake Robinson

Josh and Jake Robinson

The ReSporter likes to talk to twins especially since the writer is also a twin. In fact, as soon as it was found that Jake was the second born, the ReSporter sided with him on the interview.

The second born twin need to always stick together.

Josh and Jake Robinson started playing soccer at a young age and did not get into football until their eighth grade year. The twins were everywhere last year playing on the JV squad.

The Dynamic Duo–Repeat From Summer

Canyon Lake's Zach Henshaw

Canyon Lake's Zach Henshaw

Bracken's Grady Achilles

Bracken’s Grady Achilles

The ReSporter has the privilege of covering two of the better running backs in the region this year. Both teams go unnoticed for similar reasons…Bracken Christian will be competing in their sixth season while the Canyon Lake Hawks will be in their fourth season against Varsity teams.

Many of the players will not get the same ink as players from established schools. Both programs made significant strides last year with Bracken celebrating a Division I Championship and Canyon Lake winning their first playoff game.

Both teams have running backs that will have records that will be hard to top in the years to come.

Grady Achilles and Zach Henshaw will both be Seniors playing in the backfield. Both players have put a lot of skins on the wall the last two years…here are some samples:

Zach Henshaw

  1. Rushed for 2,259 yards in the last two seasons.
  2. Averaging 119 yards per game.
  3. Finished last season  with 771 yards in his last four games.
  4. Henshaw averaged 7.5 yards per carry during that stint.
  5. Topped 100 yards rushing in eight of the last ten games played.
  6. Henshaw has averaged 211 yards in the last three playoff games.
  7. He has averaged over 5 yards per carry for his career.

Junior Branson Belcher

The quarterback position is up for grabs and now we will talk to Junior Branson Belcher who will be battling the position out with Brandon Berger.

If you haven’t already noticed the quarterback job can only have players with the letter ‘B’ as their initials.

On the serious side, Belcher was the player who orchestrated the Junior Varsity last season. There are some decent stats for this young man that will give you an idea of what might be in store for the offense this year.
