As the Hawk’s Offensive Line goes, so goes Canyon Lake

The ReSporter will always try to get their first article on the Offensive Line for many reasons.

They are bigger than The ReSporter and you always want to be sure they are happy. Another reason is simple, your offense and defensive lines will be that main ingredient for having a good team.

Winning a battle in the trenches will dictate how the opponents will run their offense and defense. Winning this battle will usually result in a win.

This year, The ReSporter wants to start with the strong side of the offensive line. Being the second year with a Slot-T offense, this line will usually take on a lot of responsibilities on blocking for those running backs and hopefully many yards.

CL Hawks Sweep to Saturday’s Games in Wimberley

Addison Farley defeating Gravity.

CL Hawk Volleyball will go into Saturday games in Wimberley Tournament with a 4-1 record after sweeping through their Pool on Friday.

Lampasas, Hamshire-Fannett, and Uvalde all fell prey to a Hawk team that was only tested in their second game with Uvalde when they finally succumbed those Lobos, 25-20 for a chance of playing in the Gold Bracket.

Canyon Lake was quick and to the point(s) as all three games had their opponent collecting brooms after being swept.

The Hawks are in a groove with players grasping their roles on this team early.

Junior Addison Farley has made her presence known as she deprives gravity with any it’s rules when flying for a kill.

Coaches Corner with Bracken’s Head Coach Lloyd Fields

The ReSporter: Well Coach you will be playing your first scrimmage tomorrow and so what would be your

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

thoughts going into this game?

Coach Fields: “Mystery, I have no idea of where this team is because of not having enough players to go full tilt. That causes us to be more careful for practice because we cannot afford any injuries.

In 2009 we had some mystery because we graduated a bus load of players. This year we are replacing five seniors from last year’s squad and of those five players four of them went both ways.”

The ReSporter: How many players will be suited up?

Coach Fields: “We have 11 players and two of those students will be limited tomorrow. In the last two years we have had 13 and 11 players and eight of those were starters. We will need to develop some young guys to give us depth.”

Hawks will see if they can continue there quest for respect this season as they play this Friday & Saturday

Hawks will see if they can continue there quest for respect this season as they play this Friday & Saturday

Wimberley Tex-Fest Volleyball Tournament will start this Friday with 24 teams vying for a championship podium.

There will be two teams from CL’s district competing, Wimberley and Navarro.

Canyon Lake will be in Pool 3 on that first day and will play three games with Uvalde, Lampasas, and Hamshire Fannett.

The teams will be placed in one of 4 brackets based on how they finished in pool play. The Hawks will have six total games after this two day event. GO HAWKS!!

 Friday’s Games:

Bridges Gym @ 9am Hawks vs. Lampasas

Bridges Gym @ 11am Hawks vs. Hamshire Fannett

Bridges Gym @ 2pm Hawks vs. Uvalde

This will be a best of three format and if games finish early, then an early start will commence. In other words the times above might not be that actual time a game will start.

Hawks End 8 Game Losing Streak in Win over Clemens

Canyon Lake made a statement in their first game for this 2014 Volleyball season.

Schertz Clemens went down in defeat, 3-1 after winning their first game. CL took care of their unforced net violations and swept Clemens in their next three games.

Last year, the Hawks, started with a 0-3 whitewashing to this same school and with some good passing, rallies, and communication Canyon Lake had an ‘A’ game with this win.

Canyon Lake also said good-bye to that nasty 8 game losing streak they had in district play to end last season.

The Hawks had a similar situation as last year when CL started their season with these same two teams.

Clemens won in three games with little resistance as graduate Amber Ramsey finished with 7 kills and 3 blocks. Hayley Melone counted 10 digs and then freshman Regan Mickey with 11 assists.

Present Beats Past in Alumni Hawk Volleyball Game

Present Beats Past in Canyon Lake Volleyball, 2-1 as the Alumni rallied

from a 18-8 deficit to make it an interesting finish to lose 25-23 final score.

The Past had some height and this Present team had to do some digs to keep the game out of reach for those Past players.

Present team one the first match with a little resistance, but as that second game got going, the Past hit their stride and won in overtime, 26-24.

Coach Kim Paisley will be fielding her second team at Canyon Lake and one thing should be apparent, this team will be one year older.

There were not many Seniors on last year’s squad and with a freshman playing and a few sophomores, CL could not count on having experience to help answer some shortcomings in last year’s season.

“They have come a long way,” Head Coach Paisley said when asked about how the younger players had progressed since the end of last season. “This group has always been competitive and they have kind of grown into themselves. During the off-season I started seeing it.”

Coaches Corner with Coach Charley Drum

Hawks enjoying the Heat as Wednesday’s practice draws to a close.

Hawk Football is underway as Canyon Lake completed their third day of practices this Wednesday.

The ReSporter had some time with Head Coach Charley Drum and wanted to share some of his thoughts for this upcoming season.

The ReSporter: Where is your team at this time compared to last year?

Coach Drum: “We are way ahead on the offensive side of the ball.”

The ReSporter: I noticed your practice today ending with some work on special teams. The way you had some games lost based on that part of the game, is this a new emphasis?

Coach Drum: “Actually, we were trying to install a new offense last season, so we did not have a chance to spend as much time with special teams. We are finding that we can have more time to concentrate on special teams this year.”

The ReSporter: This time last year you did not have a kicker to count on and then Thorpe took that part of your game starting in your second game. How is that going this season? (more…)

Bracken Warriors Prepare for the 2014 Season

Warriors taking a break during practice.

Warriors taking a break during practice.

Fall football practice has begun and that long wait now becomes shorter as Bracken Christian began practice this past Monday.

“This year our second day of practice was better than our first day,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said. “Many times your second day is a fall off and this is the best second day of practice in a while for Bracken.”

Six-Man football has critical dates and one of those times is that first day when Coaches can see if enough boys will show up in order to see they will have enough players for a team.

Yes, there was some Junior no shows that were present for Spring practice 3 months ago, but luckily, BCS also had some new faces also in attendance.

“We have a lot of young kids doing a lot of learning,” Coach Fields continued. “But we have some players like our wide receiver (Freshman Christian DeLeon) looking like our next RJ Braune.”

Braune still holds the single season best for receiving yardage in Coach Fields first year at BCS.

Braune would be top in more of those receiving stats, but in those first two years there were no stats documented. Simple math would tell you Braun would hold almost all of the receiving marks if those stats were known.

Bailey Drum Honored with Best Girl’s Multi Sport Athlete

Thursday, June 5th, 2014

The Hilltop ReSporter got wind of one more athlete who was awarded for being the best female

Sophomore Bailey Drum with Girls AD John Gallagher after being named Best Multi Sports Athlete

Sophomore Bailey Drum with Girls AD John Gallagher after being named Best Multi Sports Athlete

multi sport athlete this past season.

With the addition of Girls AD, John Gallagher, this award was born with the intent of seeing if more girls would try their hand at more than one or two sports.

Enter this year’s winner.

Sophomore Bailey Drum who started in August and continued through the Region Track Meet in Kingsville a few weeks ago.

Drum played Varsity on both the Volleyball and Basketball team as a Sophomore and proved that this young lady will be a force as she continues her high school career.

Second Team All-District in Volleyball where Drum was also active in the class room with a 95 average during her season and making Academic All-District.

A side note for CL Volleyball in District 27-3A with teams that had Academic All-District recognition.

 School # of Girls
 Bandera 0
 Boerne 8
 Fredericksburg 3
 Navarro 0
 Wimberley 0
 Canyon Lake 10

Lillie Sander Kacee Vrana Emily Muniz Trena Lorett
 Danielle Stansberry

That is one of the most impressive stats of this season as Bailey and nine other classmates dominated this honor.

Drum finished second with 207 kills, fifth with 140 digs, third with 14 blocks, and fourth with 21 service aces for Canyon Lake this past season.

The Hawks were a very young team as Freshman Mickey and Sophomore Wunderlich were the top two players in assists.

Junior Ellis, Junior Melone, and Freshman Mickey were the top three in digs and CL had the top five non-seniors with service aces.

 Melone 56
 Regan 30
 Wunderlich 26
 Ellis 21
 Drum 21
Bailey Drum Triple Jumping in the Blanco Track Meet this year

Bailey Drum Triple Jumping in the Blanco Track Meet this year

Bailey Drum also finished her basketball season finishing second in scoring with 102 points for the Hawks. With 68 rebounds, Drum, was only behind Kyndall Drum (not related) and Amber Ramsey this past season.

Drum ran or jumped (literally) to track and field after the basketball season ended, where she was active in several events this past year, but the Triple Jump was that one event that kept Drum in competition into April with a Region berth.

Drum picked a good time to unleash her best Triple Jump of her career, as she soared for a 36-02 mark in the Area Meet after finishing on the first place podium in the District Meet, jumping for 34-07.50.

How Bailey Drum performed with her best distances or times:

100 Meter Hurdles 300 Meter Hurdles 4x400 Meter Relay
17.00 Dist Meet 51.30 Dist Meet 4:13.63 District Meet

 Triple Jump High Jump
36-02.00 Area Meet 4-08.00 Blanco Meet

Notice how many of Drum’s best marks were performed near the end of her track season which certainly gives you an idea of her never ending energy and will to compete at her very best.

Congratulations Bailey Drum and The ReSporter looks forward to covering you the next two years as there will certainly be more stories ready to expound on your conquests.
