Bad news is that no matter what the weather is doing the district schedule will be here, ready or not.

“We are still working out and hitting in the cages and other than not practicing after school today and we are staying active,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “You can’t simulate a live game and that is what we need. I have scheduled a game for us on Friday so that will give us some needed work before we start district next Tuesday.”

Canyon Lake is the only District 26-4A team yet to play.

 First Game Scores:
 Yoakum 6 La Vernia 3
 Wimberley 7 Gonzales 6
 Cuero 12 Navarro 7

“The district scores the first day was a little surprising with the number of runs that were scored,” Coach Gallagher said. “I figured defense and pitching would be stronger but that may be a case of very good offenses also.”

Canyon Lake also has shown a line-up that is producing good offensive numbers as 9 players presently batting over .318 average.

“We will prepare just like we do as usual focusing on defense as a priority and base running,” Gallagher continued. “Our offense is strong but we continue to work on hitting and bunting as well.”

Last year, Canyon Lake’s game was flying high as the Hawks were going into district play.

They faltered as they struggled while losing some heartbreaking games and then that seemed to break their spirit as each game played out.

“I think our chemistry and team unity is much stronger this season, plus they know what we didn’t do to stay ahead last year and that has been a focus in finishing strong,” Gallagher commented when thinking about how district played out last year. “We know how tough our district is just like our prior district so playing quality teams in tournaments has and will help us get ready.”

“These girls are hungry and ready to make a statement.”

Canyon Lake is certainly one year older after losing just two seniors off last year’s squad.

Just two Seniors are on this year’s squad, but those freshmen and sophomores from last year are playing at a much higher level and that might just be the ticket for this year’s team.

It will be an interesting district season this year as the Hawks will be playing different teams than last year’s district and that can tell you things just are not clear.

Just like the weather, but hopefully some sunshine will shine on these Hawks as they start district play next Tuesday.

Go Hawks!!
