Canyon Lake ran out of gas in comeback losing to Navarro last Friday, 62-55.

The Hawks had their tank go dry in the 2nd quarter scoring 7 points and leaving CL needing more petro in order for completing a comeback win.

That 7 point deficit at half had the Panthers keeping the pressure on as they increased their lead to 11 points with 4 minutes remaining in the game.

Canyon Lake in previous years might have folded the tent by this part of the game in getting back on the bus for the trek home, but this year’s club has a resilient component that will not give up as easily.

“We showed heart at the end of the game,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “Our keys to victory is taking care of the ball and getting rebounds.”

Those two items were absent during the sloppy 2nd quarter that would eventually spell doom for this night in Navarro.

The Hawks could not get the game below 7 points after that initial Panther scoring and having an answer for every Hawk push for entering back into the same zip code for a chance of pulling off a win.

Then with 4 minutes to go, CL would work the score down to a 2 point deficit after a Ryner Martin 3 pointer and a Panther time-out and the Hawks down, 55-57 right at 1 minute remaining.

That was when Canyon Lake ran out of petrol in this hard fought loss to a former district companion.

Rory Preiss, Jacob Ramirez, and Gerrit Wilkins all reached double figure scoring.

The Hawks also continued to get inspired playing from Heath McDonough with 12 rebounds as Tyler Williams finished with 10 as they fought a hard fight against a taller Panther club.

With 11 three-pointers, Canyon Lake finally broke out of a slump in that department having a better percentage from outside the arc than they could pull off inside that 3 point line.

Canyon Lake will go to work again this next Tuesday when they travel to Wimberley in hopes of reversing an earlier loss this season to the Texans.

This will be the final non-district affair as CL will set their focus on District 28-4A play when Hondo comes to town next Friday.
