Canyon Lake could not turn the page in their loss to Giddings, 28-23.

“They came out swinging,” Head Coach Charlie Drum said. “We took a couple of punches but I was proud on how we fought.”

Coach Drum continued, “We need to eliminate mistakes as we were inside the 20 several times without any points….that is why we play a team like Giddings, but we had every excuse to fold.”

Giddings’ Tavion Page was the culprit as this Buffalo ran all over the field that left the Hawks grasping at air for much of the night.

Page had a 47 and 95 yard touchdown runs while catching a 30 yard pass for good measure to help get Giddings their first win for the year.

               Let’s Go Hawks!

Canyon Lake was two different teams as the Hawks mustered 130 yards of offense in the first half and then came out of their locker room to cover 406 yards of offense in the 2nd half of play.

Giddings held a 14-3 lead and before the 3rd quarter was half over, two Hawk scores had helped CL to seize their first advantage for this contest.

With 196 passing yards, Canyon Lake would have their best game through the air since the birth of the Slot-T offense back in 2013.

“We knew that our offense wasn’t clicking,” Quarterback Ben Fulton started. “We have leaders that would let us know we needed to finish….and after that first drive to start the 2nd half we were feeling it.”

Offensive Lineman, Jacob Foster, has been on the varsity starting his fourth year and that was one of the leaders, that Fulton was alluding too.

“This was our chance to prove we could finish,” Foster quipped. “We were flat in the first half and we needed to change our mindset, not only for Giddings, but for the rest of the season.”

Giddings scored with .23 seconds right before half that helped complete a dominant first part of the game as these Buffaloes had doubled CL in yardage and not allowing any Hawk momentum.

Canyon Lake has t-shirts that has one word, ‘Finish’, and it was games like this that had the Hawks with losses that had  lackluster results in year’s past.

That would not be the issue for this game as Canyon Lake scored two quick touchdowns that had the good guys with the lead for the first time, 17-14.

Tristan Chacon would be featured on this night after more injuries to key players that gave CL a chance to have more players with some featured time on the field.

Chacon finished with 221 total yard by air and ground as this young man continues to show he is ready for his curtain call.

Joseph Ruiz was also thrown into high maintenance with a 17 carry night for 88 yards as this was his most totes in a game thus far.

On the difference between the first and second half, Ruiz said, “I felt like I needed to step-up and just keep my feet moving….we were not playing fast when we started the game but in the 2nd half we were a better team and acted like it.”

Canyon Lake would come up short with a fake field goal and then another opportunity would present itself when Fulton would find G. T. Greene for a 3 yard touchdown pass with right at 3:00 left in the game.

                          Go Hawks!!

Enter a play that has a good success rate for CL when Lorett would onside kick and have Lee Stafford getting the lose ball to give the Hawks one last time to win the game.

Ruiz had a 17 yard run on a jet sweep putting Canyon Lake on the Buffalo 31 yard line, then a 9 and 8 yard runs for Chacon on consecutive plays had CL with a first down on the Buffaloes 14 yard line.

The Hawks needed 6 yards for a first and 11 yards for a go ahead touchdown, but the page came up short on this drama with CL knocking on the door but no one was home in what would be the first loss this season.

Canyon Lake would end up leading in total yardage which would not have been something attainable after seeing how this contest started.

Playing in that second half was a team that had found their book, it just came up one page short.

Next week will have Wimberley coming to town and CL will need to be ready from start to finish.

“We need to come out with energy and for all four quarters,” Fulton closed.

Go Hawks!!
