Canyon Lake ran their record to 3-0 after running over the Buffaloes, 14-8 this past Thursday.

“Our defense played a great game,” Head JV Coach John Barthels stated. “Yes, we made plenty of mistakes but when we needed to step up we did when it was needed…..I am proud of the kids.”

CL’s defense was stout in the win as the Buffaloes were mostly grazing with nothing to hang their horns on. After rushing for 23 yards on 21 carries, Giddings finally uncorked a couple of runs to make their average better as a the first run in the 4th quarter helped get the Buffaloes out of a hole after starting their drive at the Hawks 8 yard line.

                   Let’s Go Hawks!

That run of 22 yards was one yard shy of the total up to that point in the game.

On that same drive, the Buffaloes QB Daven Birnbaum got loose for a 62 yard touchdown run that suddenly made this one sided game into a much closer affair.

Those 92 yards rushing on that one drive would be the only time that Giddings would show any signs of a rushing game.

The 2nd Half, CL tapped out the Buffaloes passing game after completing 3 passes for 7 yards and a final interception to close this contest out by Hudson Ammons.

“I just wanted to help the team,” Ammons said in response to his solid play defensively and closing this game with an interception. “When I dropped the ball earlier in the game, I just wanted another chance to get an interception.”

Ammon is a transfer student from Canyon High School and his response to being at Canyon Lake,” It’s different and I am enjoying it and just want to play some Friday Night Lights.”

Canyon Lake lost some chances for more scores after starting the game with an 11 play drive covering 53 yards that ended with failed fourth down play deep in Giddings territory.

Go CL Hawks!

The Hawks would score on their next drive of 75 yards that was highlighted by a QB sneak by Cody Kline that went 52 yards and a CL score.

“The line was open and our center blocked and I went to the open area,” QB Kline recounted. “I will have the same mindset for Wimberley as we did in our game today.”

Those would be the Hawks only two drives in the first half.

When the curtain was raised for the 2nd half, Kline would have the honors again when he went through the line looking like a Buffalo racing for 61 yards on the second play.

Giddings would respond with their best drive in that first half, passing down to CL’s 7 yard line, but with the half running out of time, Defensive Tackle Devin Cordell would wrestle a Buffalo to the ground for an 8 yard loss and the clock showing, 0:00.

Big play that would prove to be a game changer after that score later in the 4th by Giddings.

Gordon the Plumber says Way to Go Hawks!!

Gordon is All In for your Plumbing Needs & Go Hawks

Canyon Lake would let a fumble stop a drive that had the Hawks with a chance to ice the contest. A fumbled snap would stop this Hawk chance on the Giddings 8 yard line.

It was a methodical drive with a heavy dose of Andrew Kullberg taking the hand off on 6 of the 12 plays for a respectable, 37 yards. Kullberg would end the game with 70 yards of real estate.

The Hawk defense was stout for most of the contest as Trey Lucero would typify CL’s toughness as Lucero took a Buffalo receiver out with no gainer that had Canyon Lake eating Buffalo Burgers.

“My mindset was see ball and get ball,” Lucero quipped. “We kept calm and just did what we are told and that helped us.”

Lucero was commenting on how well the defense played in this game. With what is next with Wimberley, “We are going to practice harder and we know better of what we need to do as this same Gidding’s team played Wimberley in a close game.”

Canyon Lake will have a humdinger next week as they take to the road to Wimberley as they will face a Texan team that will match the Hawks.
