CL Hawks Biggest Road Win in Upset Over Boerne, 31-21

Canyon Lake pulled off their biggest upset in the past 10 years when the Hawks won the coin toss and game over the previous (7-0) and now (7-1) Boerne Greyhounds.
Yes, the coin flip was a big win for CL as that simple routine before a game allowed the Hawks to take the ball and drain every bit of air out of that oblong object.
The proof was having possession of the ball for a whopping, 38:31 minutes while Boerne’s offense cooled off on the sidelines.

“I am proud of the team,” Coach Charley Drum stated. “We had preached all week on winning all three phases of the game (offense/defense/special teams) and our defense was able to disrupt Boerne on their first possession in the first and second half.”
Canyon Lake started with the ball on their 13 yard line and by adding a 15 yard penalty that would have the first drive covering 102 yards of real estate while taking over 7 minutes of game time.
Tanner Faris had a 44 yard run that converted a 2nd and 19, as Faris (204) would end the game with his second 200 yard game against the Greyhounds.
Then the Hawk Defense would take the stage and after Boerne’s first three plays, CL would be back on the field.
That first possession of the Greyhounds was highlighted by a Lee Stafford sack as Boerne needed just 2 yards to convert a first down but was now in punt formation.
Canyon Lake would continue their onslaught, starting on their 19 yard line and 81 yards and 7 minutes later having a two score lead, 14-0.
Canyon Lake soars High
This drive was capped off with a great 40 yard catch and run play for Caimen McDonough, who has 3 catches this year, that have all resulted in touchdowns.
Borneo’s next time with the ball would have the Greyhounds unleashing their running game as this pass happy team got the best of the Hawks when they carved out a 45 yard run to put their offense with an answer to CL’s lead, with still 7 minutes remaining before halftime.
Canyon Lake’s next possession would start like the previous two, as the Hawks started deep in their own territory for the 3rd time in as many starts, this time at the 15 yard line.
This drive would drain more time in the half and another score for a dominating, 21-7 Hawk lead.
CL’s special teams was on cue, as the next kick-off would see a Greyhound lost fumble.

The Hawks threatened but were left short after a 39 yard run from Faris getting to Boerne’s 5 yard line with no time left on the clock.
“It was tough,” Running Back Faris said after a 25 carry performance. “They were hitting hard and they never gave up….but we ended up on top and all we had to do was run out the clock.”
Canyon Lake had amassed 292 yards while giving up 83 in that first half of play showing how dominant the game started and the importance of winning that coin toss.
This game was certainly not over as CL has had a propensity to come out of their halftime talk and not being as sharp in games that show up in the loss column. Go to any Taylor game and you will see those results played out with losses.
The Defense dialed up a 3 play and punt scenario which would dictate how this game might have a chance with a better end result.
Canyon Lake’s defense has been pretty stout against some high octane schools, as this year, Wimberley and Boerne have had a lot of success churning out lots of yardage and points in their games.
The Greyhounds came into the contest with a 36 point scoring average while Wimberley entered their Hawk game with an impressive, 49 points per game.
Boerne’s 21 and the Texans 20 points speaks volumes on how well the Hawk defense helped in those games.
CL would score to start the 2nd half needing a shorter distance to score, starting on their 39 yard line.
No explosive plays as this possession had the Hawks draining 7 more minutes of prime offensive opportunities for the Greyhounds.
Faris would score his second touchdown on a 2 yard run and 28-7 Hawk lead.
Boerne was desperate now as their next chance with the ball would end similarly after Ross Snowden sack, on a 4th down Greyhound try. Give credit to the defensive backs, as Boerne’s QB Brooks Klutts, had plenty of time to check down on all his options before the Snowden Avalanche.
The Greyhounds could not afford to have CL with the ball and risked a chance of converting, needing 6 yards to continue their drive.

CL could not capitalize on this possession and turned the ball over on downs.
Boerne would make the game interesting scoring covering 70 yards and taking 5 minutes for those points. The Hawk defense would not make it easy for Boerne as the Greyhounds needed 12 plays to get back to a two score deficit, 28-14.
Special Teams would come alive two more times with a J.T. Greene catch of an onside kick and taking the ball to Boerne’s 35 yard line.
This Hawk drive would put an end to the game after that Greyhound touchdown, when Trent Lorett kicked a 24 yard filed goal, giving CL a 17 point advantage with 6 minutes remaining. Draining 5 more minutes with 9 plays for the nail driving into the coffin score.
Boerne did respond with a 61 yard pass, one play drive, but the Hawks would recover the next onside Greyhound try and and finish draining the swamp.
Canyon Lake is now in prime condition to take care of business as their will be two more games to see if this might be the year of their first district championship.
The same record as last year with the same wins and losses to the schools on their schedule.
One change will need to transpire this time around and finishing the Taylor game with a win would accomplish a District 14-4A goal.
Right now the Hawk’s will be focused on Fredericksburg as this will be the final home game as the Billies will bring another high powered offense to the Hawk Nest.
