Boys Soccer Wins 5th Straight in Rematch Over SA Christian, 4-0
Canyon Lake Boys’ Soccer was back in action this past Tuesday against the San Antonio Christian School Lions. This was the second meeting against the Lions this season for the Hawks. In the first meeting the Hawks beat the Lions in the Canyon Lake Classic Championship game by converting a corner in the final seconds of regulation time. The Hawks would go on to defeat the Lions 2-4 in Penalty Shootout to earn the Championship trophy for the second year in a row in their home tournament.
Tuesday’s fixture between the Hawks and the Lions would be a revenge match that would leave the Lions bitter sweet. “There is nothing like sweet revenge”, Coach Tierney told his team pre-game. “These guys are looking for sweet revenge, but what’s even sweeter will be putting an exclamation point on this rematch”. The squad would go on to do just that.
In first twenty minutes of the match both teams had great pace in the game, split the possession and there was physical competition all over the pitch. The Lions had early opportunities to score from their #9, Noah Platzer, who is the leading scorer in the San Antonio area. Goalkeeper Brayden Damico denied any opportunity the Lions had with clinical saves. The scoring would open up for the Hawks in the 30th minute with a Trenton Lorett banger from way outside the 18 yard box in the upper right 90 of the goal.
“Its the best we’ve played all season. We played really well as a team tonight”, stated team captain Trenton Lorett about Tuesday’s performance. “I had the space and the angle, so I pulled the trigger”, Lorett stated. The Hawks would go into halftime leading the Lions 1-0.
The second half only brought with it more phenomenal play from the Hawks. With an assist from Wingback Drew Pipkin, Nash Young would strike a goal in the 57th minute putting the Hawks up 2-0. The boys weren’t done yet. With a connection from Midfielder Matt Bell, Winger Jorge DeLeon would find the back of the net in the 68th minute to extend the Hawks lead to 3-0. The final score would come from Midfielder Josh Sczech who was busy all night in the midfield including one assist to Trenton Lorett. This would put the Hawks up 4-0 in the 76th minute to put that exclamation mark on the Lions hopeful revenge match.
“We played quality defense all night. Our backline shutdown the top scorer in the San Antonio area and our high pressure team defense gave us an offensive attack with turnovers all over the pitch”, said Coach Tierney after the match. The Hawks controlled the game with 62% of the possession on the night. The offense kept the Lions unbalanced by using a mixture of direct and indirect play. “Our gameplan was to control the game and we executed that with ball movement and great teamwork”, stated Captain Matt Bell who had an assist to Jorge DeLeon.
The final result was Canyon Lake Hawks 4-0 over the San Antonio Christian School Lions. The 8-2-1 Hawks will look to extend their 5 game win streak this Friday in Pleasanton against the Eagles at 6:00pm.
